The last 18 months has been blighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With countries hesitantly coming out of lockdowns, perhaps it’s a good time to ask what we have learned and what it means for enterprise technology and, more importantly, for the people who use technology in our enterprises.

If I had to summarize what IDC has learned from our clients from COVID-19, it might best be captured in two words — DIGITAL RESILIENCY. With digital transformation (DX), digital underpins every aspect of the modern enterprise. This is often ignored in traditional approaches to business resiliency, which typically focus on safeguarding distinct enterprise functions or businesses on a piecemeal basis. It is also often ignored by standard IT risk management and disaster recovery practices that safeguard specific IT assets and resources. Both perspectives typically downplay the critical business capabilities supported by DX that cut cross organizational boundaries. Both are often purely defensive.

By contrast, digital resiliency can be defined as the ability of the enterprise to not only restore essential business capabilities but also capitalize on the changed conditions to bounce back even better than before.

Azure Hibernation allows businesses to pause virtual machines (VMs) when not in use, significantly reducing compute costs. It was a fantastic place to build toward. The browser is ubiquitous and free, everyone knows how to use one, and there was very little barrier to entry. There is a downside though — they are built for the consumer and not with enterprise requirements in mind. Enterprises are looking for security features like clipboard controls, fine-tuned data download and upload policies, and the ability to enforce watermarks to prevent critical data exfiltration, among a host of other features to protect their most precious resource — their intellectual property.

Most of these tools need a set of credentials for usage. According to Okta, the average company uses 88 apps. While each user only uses a few of those apps, there are still a lot of credentials for each employee to remember.

To manage this complexity, users take shortcuts. For example, they reuse passwords across services. They also use common phrases that are easy to guess. Many users don’t even try to make it hard on attackers — “123456” was the most common password of 2020.

For healthcare providers, it’s not a matter of IF but WHEN you’ll be impacted by ransomware, which unfortunately is still finding victims and impacting care delivery. After seeing a post-pandemic drop, the rate of ransomware is accelerating again. Two groups getting attention lately are CIOp and BlackCat (ALPHV). ClOp’s MOVEit Transfer hack to date has affected 15 million people and 121 organizations. BlackCat (ALPHV), skilled at exfiltration, threatened to leak photos and sensitive data of a plastic surgeon’s patients and, according to a Check Point report, previously leaked patients’ photos and medical records after an attack against American healthcare provider LVHN earlier this year.

As I started, and as the content started piling up, it got me thinking back on a few projects and the critical design areas where customers have commonly stumbled. So, I decided to mix up the order and add a fourth part for a more in-depth discussion on the remaining critical design areas:

• Management and monitoring

We are also incredibly excited to announce that the Citrix Workspace app 2402 LTSR for Windows is now generally available! This Citrix Workspace app LTSR for Windows includes an extended 3 years of support to help ease your client update processes.

Moving fully to the cloud isn’t for everyone, and we know that. That’s why we’ve continued to invest in our on-premises solutions so you can leverage cloud capabilities on premises too. The Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2402 LTSR includes several years’ worth of features to take advantage of. Some of these features were previously only offered in the cloud, and a plethora of on-premises features have been added since the release of the last LTSR in March of 2022. Additionally, customers on our current release (CR) track can leverage this release as a regular update within their environments. So let’s take a closer look at what the 2402 LTSR can do for you.

So much has shifted in 12 months, and despite best efforts to acclimate to a new way of learning, many challenges remain.
