It was that I had no finish line. I was creating endless open loops in my brain, carrying unfinished tasks into the evening, and checking emails simply because I didn’t have a clear signal that the working day was over.

I share the three-step routine I now use to close down my working day:

The brain dump – getting everything out of my head and onto paper so my brain doesn’t have to keep tracking it.

The Big Three – identifying the three priority tasks for the day and recognising what I’ve actually accomplished.

The shutdown routine – celebrating the day’s wins, planning tomorrow’s priorities, closing the laptop and physically leaving the workspace.

The final step is particularly important. And if you wait until everything is finished before you stop working, you may never actually stop.

In this episode of The Tutor Edit, I’m sharing the simple 10-minute shutdown routine that helped me create a much clearer boundary between work and the rest of my life.

For me, the problem wasn’t necessarily that I was working too much.

Creating a physical transition away from your workspace helps reinforce the message that work has ended and you are allowed to stop.

I also talk about why you don’t need to feel disciplined before creating a routine. Sometimes the ritual comes first, and the feeling of control follows.

If you’re a tutor or business owner who finds yourself checking emails late at night, thinking about work during dinner, or struggling to switch off, this episode is a reminder that you don’t need to finish everything.

You simply need to create your own finish line.

Your brain may have been waiting for permission to stop.

What You’ll Take Away

Why working for yourself can make it difficult to know when the working day is actually over

How unfinished tasks create mental clutter and keep you thinking about work

A simple three-step, 10-minute routine for shutting down your working day

Why physically leaving your workspace can help reinforce your boundaries

Why you don’t have to wait until you feel disciplined to build better habits

How creating a consistent end-of-day ritual can help you switch off and enjoy your evening

</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:10:22</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/c721ecf9-95d7-4a61-8347-8e62aba8ce16/logos/d5c149ff-13dc-4cb4-9a3d-19a6cad6ec5f.png"/><itunes:episode>17</itunes:episode><itunes:title>The 10-Minute Daily Routine Every Tutor Needs</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

The Hidden Cost of Working from Home as a Tutor (And How to Fix It)

Many tutors leave the classroom dreaming of more flexibility, freedom, and time with their families. Simple expectations around emails, availability and admin can help you reclaim your evenings and prevent burnout.

Links to resources mentioned in today's episode:

🎙️ Watch The Tutor Edit on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Vireo_Academy

📸 Follow on Instagram: @vireo_academy

🌐 Website: www.vireoacademy.com

🌏 If you're looking to spend the Summer reviewing your tuition business, download your End of Year Review here.

If you found this helpful, please subscribe and leave a review, it helps more tutors find the show!
</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:11:02</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/c721ecf9-95d7-4a61-8347-8e62aba8ce16/logos/d5c149ff-13dc-4cb4-9a3d-19a6cad6ec5f.png"/><itunes:episode>14</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Build a Tutoring Business That Gives You More Freedom, Not Less</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

How to Collect Parent Testimonials That Grow Your Tutoring Business

Many tutors finish the academic year, breathe a sigh of relief, and immediately switch into summer mode. In this video, I break down the marketing advice tutors should actually ignore.

In this episode, I kick off a special summer mini-series by exploring why the quieter months are the perfect time to evaluate what's actually working in your tutoring business. Ultimately, this episode is a reminder that relationships are often the real foundation of sustainable business growth.

3 Key Takeaways:
Human Connection Builds Trust Faster
While online communication can sustain a business, meeting in person often creates a level of trust, ease, and understanding that can take months or years to develop remotely.

Imposter Syndrome Can Keep You Playing Small
Even successful business owners can delay opportunities because they feel they are “not ready yet.” Recognising these hidden fears can open the door to growth.

Relationships Matter More Than Strategy Alone
Systems and marketing are important, but strong relationships often lead to better ideas, faster decisions, and unexpected opportunities that strategy alone cannot create.

Links to resources mentioned in today's episode:

🎙️ Watch The Tutor Edit on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Vireo_Academy

📸 Follow on Instagram: @vireo_academy

🌐 Website: www.vireoacademy.com

🌏 If you're interested in growing an international client base, download my free guide to get started: How to Become an International Tutor

If you found this helpful, please subscribe and leave a review, it helps more tutors find the show!
</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:12:15</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/c721ecf9-95d7-4a61-8347-8e62aba8ce16/logos/d5c149ff-13dc-4cb4-9a3d-19a6cad6ec5f.png"/><itunes:title>Why Human Connection Still Matters in an Online Tutoring Business</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

The Habits You Didn’t Mean to Bring Into Tutoring

In this episode, I reflect on how many former teachers unknowingly carry their old working habits into their tutoring business. These questions help you make grounded, intentional decisions without burning everything down.

Links to resources mentioned in today's episode:

🎙️ Watch The Tutor Edit on YouTube:

📸 Follow on Instagram: @Vireo_Academy

🌐 Website: www.vireoacademy.com

If you're interested in growing an international client base, download my free guide to get started:

If you found this helpful, please subscribe and leave a review, it helps more tutors find the show!

📸 Follow on Instagram: @vireo_academy

🌐 Website: www.vireoacademy.com

If you're interested in growing an international client base, download my free guide to get started:

How to become an International Tutor

If you found this helpful, please subscribe and leave a review, it helps more tutors find the show!

</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:09:48</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/c721ecf9-95d7-4a61-8347-8e62aba8ce16/logos/d5c149ff-13dc-4cb4-9a3d-19a6cad6ec5f.png"/><itunes:episode>1</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Busy vs Burnout: How to Take Back Control of Your Tutoring Schedule</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

For Tutors Trying to Make This Work With Real Life
