Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 135 When I Need to Tell My Story with Samantha Decker

Families tell stories. We gather around the table laugh about the times when so-and-so said that funny and unexpected thing, when another did that brave thing, and when so-and-so scared us senseless but it all worked out in the end.

Indeed, there's a glue which bonds families together and it has no respect for blood relation, for sometimes these families start out as acquaintances then build into friendship, then by God's grace, are forged into brotherhood and sisterhood. No matter how these "families" are formed, the glue which holds us together is story-telling. It's stickiness is determined by the laughter and tears the story holds.

The stories with enduring stickiness keep even those who have passed away close and connected. Their memory and their courage, their faith lives on and shape those who hear their story. One generation learns from another.

Today, a good friend of mine, Samantha Decker, is sharing her reflection of Psalm 135 with us and reminding us of the most important stories we need to tell and retell and then tell again to our children and then teach them to tell to their children and their children's children. May God's ever-lasting faithfulness become the bonding agent of our lives.

hen we read God's Word, we're not alone. The Holy Spirit is with us and leading us, making this truth come to life to us in new and exciting ways. The Bible is the only book which reads us as we read it.

I love this reflection of Psalm 121 from my good friend, Amy Lively, as it illustrates this so beautifully.

God led her to read this psalm while resting on a height, and deep insight gushed forth. Insight for her life, but also for ours, because God is cool like that. I hope this reflection is as timely for you as it has been for me.

Why did God reveal Jesus' birth the way He did?

God, beaming as the proud Father He is, He didn't write it in the skies though He could have. He didn't release all of creation to clap their hands and sing for their Creator though He could have. He didn't tell the ones who society held as most important - the kings and political figures, not even the religious leaders as we'll soon uncover. He came to ones He saw as very important and incredibly symbolic - the lowly shepherds.

I want us to embrace a moment of nothingness, as hard as it may be for us. Keep the TV off, put the phone away. If not for a whole summer, how about today? How about for five minutes? For, it's only when we're bored that we start to ask ourselves the question: "What sounds fun?"

We need more fun! This life is a gift and God intends for us to enjoy it. To have fun. If our days have become so busy and demanding that it requires get to a place of boredom before we ask ourselves, "What sounds fun?" then boredom it is! Almighty God, grant us boredom so that we might enjoy this gift and reflect more on the gifts and promises You've so generously given us.

Today, we start our sixth summer in the Psalms together (feel free to review posts and episodes from summers past), and we're opening to Psalm 65 to remind ourselves more of our abundantly generous God.

A Noticer: Feasts on Awe and Wonder

With the coming of Jesus, the law was not abolished but fulfilled and their traditions became stale. Feasting on "stale" spiritual nourishment, left them sick. We must cultivate a fear of the Lord. We must live in the awe and wonder of God which comes as we humble ourselves and proclaim, "He is the Son of God!" I am not. God is on His throne and His power is matchless. When we feast on who He is, rather than feasting on how good we are at following Him, then we're starting down the path of humility.

Practicing God's Presence in What We See

Travon Smith: Running the Race of Fatherhood

Last Sunday was the OKC Memorial Marathon, so it’s fitting to have a good friend of mine and ‘Dubya’s join us today to talk about his experience running the marathon after enduring months of bedrest from a terrible car accident. Plus, what did he learn through this trial to help propel him forward as a new Dad?

If you are a dad or one day hope to be, this episode is for you. If you know a dad, this episode is for you, too. If you have experienced a strained relationship with your father or as a father you wish to have a closer relationship with your child(ren), we want you to know their is hope! Growing up, I remember watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. If you’re not familiar with this book or movie, it’s about 4 teenage girls whose stories and lives are all so different, and though they are forced to spend their summer apart, a pair of jeans somehow fits each one, though their figures are as different as their stories. Reflecting on our unexpected friendship, I think I’ve found my own version of this Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Our stories, backgrounds, ages, hurts, habits and hang-ups are all so very different, but our common thread is not denim. It’s the decision to surrender these cares to Christ and walk with others who are doing the same.

As we practice engaging our sense of hearing to experience God, we’re focusing on hearing God as we share vulnerable conversations in safe, Christ-centered community. I’m truly honored to bring you into a circle with a few of the voices who have shared their stories with me. Today, a couple of the ladies I have had the pleasure of meeting through Celebrate Recovery whom I now call dear friends, Kayla and DeLana, are joining us.

It, too, is very real, a constant in our presence but we often miss it because we are not tuned in to listen. It's the voice of God.

Shiann Wickham: Spiritual Health

Courtney Cartwright shares a storm she and her husband endured soon after they said, “I do.” Instead of preparing for growing their family, they found themselves holding this dream loosely as Courtney was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Joy Marker: Peace in Complex Realities of Life

How do we know God’s peace when the reality before us is not what we wanted? Scripture speaks of “peace that passes all understanding” but does it cover these complex circumstances, too? The Sunday school answer is “yes” but sometimes it feels very much like a “no” when we are the one in the struggle.

This week, my friend, Joy Marker, is joining us to talk about her journey with a chronic autoimmune disease, Multiple Sclerosis. For her, the diagnosis came when she was in her mid-forties. This diagnosis interrupted and threatened not only her plan but her peace. However, she now sees the gifts which might not have happened if she wasn’t on this path. One being, she is able to see the world around her more clearly as she shares her reflections out loud. Today, we're talking about:

It was a season marked with simplicity yet burst with giddy sparkles and vibrant technicolor and the beautiful, grounding thought, "I want to remember this," echoing through my mind. Even enduring covid and quarantine, this season held love, comfort, joy and peace. So much peace.

Oh, and flying pigs! Yep, it's all in there!

Hard times are no respecter of persons, we all experience these, and like my friend, Sarah Freymuth points out, there are no instructions for times like these and no platitudes or forced positivity will bring us the peace we crave. Sarah is the author of All the Hard Things: 50 Days Through the Valley and is offering truth to help reinforce our faith in God’s intimate goodness. She writes:

“When we stare into a cavern of grief from the loss of a beloved one, or a medical diagnosis with a wicked track history, we’re faced with a faith that either holds up or unfolds, collapses or expands. And if you're thinking, "Okay, but my heart is broken in two. This pain I feel is real. It's overwhelming. If there's a God who feels, a God who cares, wouldn't He see the injustice of the world and His heart would break?"

May I remind you friend, it does. God's heart breaks when He sees our pain and suffering. I know this sounds comforting but it's not just a nice-to-hear, it's the truth. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Walk with me back to Genesis.

Home for the Holidays: Fall-la-la-la-la

November to me is summarized most plainly and festively as "Fall-la-la-la" - the time when seasons merge, both pumpkins and maybe trees. By no effort of my own, only through means of a gift received, there is fudge in the fridge. Fudge, of all things, has been our first sign of the holidays this year. The anticipation of Christmas just around the bend.

And soon conversations move from the tree to holiday plans, and with it, the holiday "F" word is mentioned. Family.

God has made a way for all of us to experience and notice Him in our midst, but many miss Him just like many missed that first Christmas. The innkeeper, he wasn't all that bad. His actions could be evaluated as moral, even kind - offering the only place he saw available. His limited vision caused him to tolerate inconvenience, unable to fully embrace and welcome it. Doing so, he missed Christmas, the miracle of Jesus' birth, in his own backyard.

Summer in the Psalms - Psalm 124: When I Need to be Refreshed

Psalm 124 is where we’re starting this summer and though I’ve chosen this, seemingly by happenstance, simply picking up where we left off from last summer, I don’t believe this is a matter of happenstance.

I believe it’s a Psalm our hearts need to ponder.

Perhaps I’m projecting my teacher days a bit here, but summer is often looked at as a time of refreshment. Not just because we can beat the heat by splashing in a refreshing pool of water with friends, but because the days are longer, our schedules a bit more flexible. We vacate, even if not physically to a new location, we vacate to a less stressed, more relaxed state of mind.

Or at least, we long to.

And what I know to be true is if we want to feel this refreshment mentally - have less to do’s and to be’s on our minds- and physically - our shoulders moving away from our ears, our guts finding healthy rhythm once again... If we want to feel this refreshment emotionally - less weight to carry... Then, we must be intentional to seek this refreshment spiritually. In other words, if we want to be refreshed mentally, physically and emotionally, we have to bring these things to God.

The Psalms are just that. A collection of times when people who lived before us have brought “their things” to God...

Hunter Sallee: Running for Another

Last year, while serving at one of the water stops at the OKC Memorial Marathon, I see these two come running by (with the front of the pack, I may add) and I was immediately inspired. Then did a double-take to recognize it was Dubya and I's good friend, Hunter Sallee running! The moment only allowed for a quick "HUNTER!!!" and a wave, but I knew I wanted to hear their story. You don't just run a half marathon pushing a wheelchair on a whim... Nah, a selfless act like this, God has nudged your heart and propelled your legs.

Sure enough, hearing Hunter's story and how it began from birth for him, it's a beautiful testimony of gratitude for healing and also a reminder of how we can and should use the gifts and talents God has given us for the benefit of others.

Hunter Sallee is an avid runner who has chosen to use this gift of his to serve others through the Hoyt Organization, which is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1989 which aspires to build the individual character, self-confidence and self-esteem of America’s disabled young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life.

Practicing God's Presence in What We Feel

As we continue thinking about how we can experience God's presence through our five senses, we are going to focus on feeling God's embrace through our closest relationships - family. It may be a parent or grandparent, a sibling or neighbor, or someone else who has served in a nurturing or mentoring role for you. God is so very faithful to bring the family of God around us to help us feel His embrace.

God is very serious and cares deeply about family. So much so, the command to honor your father and mother is the fifth of the Ten Commandments and is linked to a long and prosperous life. Interestingly, He doesn't add, "...if they are honorable." It is a command without condition. Honor your father and mother.

So what does this mean in practice?

Muriel Kom: Painting for an Audience of 1

Muriel-Laure Kom has been serving as a prophetic fine artist since 2023, painting in oils with under layers in mixed media (acrylics, inks, spray paint, collage). In her own words she says, the Lord Jesus Christ spoke to me that year, telling me that art is a portal and that He wanted to use me to create paintings that would usher people in His Loving Presence. The honor that He gives me to hear His instructions as I am painting, to feel His Spirit filling me, to be ministered to as the image is taking form on the canvas, and to see people being touched by my artworks, is more precious than what words can describe. How can we see God? How can we see Love? Can we see Him and learn more about Him through His creation surrounding us? Today, my friend, Susie Lipps, who has a background in theology from Fuller Seminary, a passion for leadership and after being “banished” to wine country, her eyes have been opened to understand the Love of the Father and Son for us in a deeper way.

Susie Lipps (MAGL, Fuller Seminary) is a missionary kid from Honduras where she lived in a mud hut and went to boarding school. After God sent she and her husband to wine country, Susie created a wine-country retreat for leaders called Conversations in the Vineyard. She loves speaking on leadership principles from the vineyard, women in leadership, emerging leaders and telling stories of God’s faithfulness. She is fluent in Spanish and loves coffee (or wine) accompanied by good conversations and yummy food. Also check out the Conversations in the Vineyard blog.

Susie is walking us through the passage of John 15, where Jesus tells his disciples, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.” She brings key insight from her background in Bible translation to help uncover misconceptions as well as context she’s learned and observed in the vineyard to help us see this passage of scripture more clearly.

Blythe Daniel is the co-author of I Love You, Mom! and Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters with her mother, Dr. Helen McIntosh. She worked for Harper Collins Christian Publishing in marketing and publicity, and is a literary agent. She lives in Colorado with her husband and three teens, including her author son William Daniel.

Helen McIntosh, EdD, Counseling Psychology, is a counselor, educator, and co-author of I Love You, Mom! and Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters with her daughter Blythe Daniel. Helen authored Messages to Myself and her work has appeared in Guideposts and HomeLife magazines. She resides in Georgia with her husband Jim. They have two children and five grandchildren.

William Daniel is a middle schooler, competitive gymnast and author of You’re Joking Me: Jokes for Kids by a Kid. He enjoys telling jokes and making his family and friends laugh. Davy Reeks and Diane Stanley are twin sisters who have been gifted with a singing talent from birth. After pursuing their degrees and singing classical and Opera music, they now serve in their churches and also perform regularly with The Singing Princess of San Antonio, and continues to make little kids' dreams come true as Elsa, Anna, Cinderella and Ariel (to name a few).

Davy sings Soprano and possesses extensive expertise in performing and instructing a wide range of music genres. She has consistently guided students towards success, helping them secure coveted roles with Broadway Tours and with prestigious equity companies such as Music Theater Wichita, The MUNY, Flat Rock Playhouse, and Lyric Theater of Oklahoma. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with renowned institutions such as San Antonio Opera, San Antonio Symphony, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and Light Opera Oklahoma. Most recently, she held the position of Adjunct Voice Professor at Oklahoma City University's esteemed Wanda L. Bass School of Music. She currently serves as Director of Singer’s Workshop at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX, and teaches private voice at Lopez Middle School.

Diane is a voice over artist and vocalist of the San Antonio and Austin surrounding area and has previously served as an elementary music teacher. She currently serves as the Children’s Director at Grace Church New Braunfels. In addition to this, she has performed with the acapella quartet, Southern Stride, an internationally ranked quartet, having received 4th place in the BING Harmony competition in Germany (2018).

I think that's what childhood faith is all about. As adults, we're tempted to dismiss it as icky mud, but children see puddles waiting to be jumped in! So today, put on your rainboots because we're jumping in the puddles together as my friend, Deidre Braley, shares her reflection of Psalm 96 with us and reminds us of where our peace and our joy come from and how we can experience this in a deeper way today.

Deidre is a freelance writer and editor. Gretchen Leech: Peace in the Downpour

What about those times when the downpour won’t stop? When it’s back-to-back _____. You fill in the blank. For Gretchen Leech, it was back-to-back battles with cancer for her husband. The storm intensified as she was a caretaker of not just her husband but also their 3-year-old and 8-month-old children while her husband battled cancer for nearly 3 years. None of these things did she sign up for, but through these experiences, God grew her closer to Him.

Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 86 - When I Need to Stop "Fixing" and Live By Faith by Mary Thionett

What does it mean to "live by faith"? If you're like me, there have been moments when I think I'm living by faith but later realize I was blinded to see my attempts to strategize, analyze, and "fix" a situation for the lack of trust, lack of faith, it really is. When this "strategizing" is based on my emotions and perspective rather than my trust and dependence on God, I'm not living by faith; I'm living by my own strength.

Relying on our know-how and limited understanding while also trying to be a follower of Christ is a common picture of a divided heart. And, we're not the first to struggle in this way. King David prayed for God to give him an undivided heart in Psalm 86. My friend, Mary Thionnet, too, has known this struggle, specifically as a mother, and she's sharing her reflection to help challenge us to fix our eyes on Jesus rather than trying to fix the situations before us.

Mary Thionnet serves the Pastor of Kids Ministries for Crossings Community Church at the OKC location. She and her husband, Jeff, have four young adult children. Together they enjoy traveling to Washington, hiking, and spending time outside.

An Unhurried Business this Holiday with Lauren Cunningham

We want to slow down to be present this holiday season, but how do we do this with our business? With year-end quickly approaching, we may feel victim to hurry and extended work days. Add the pressure of keeping up with social media and understanding algorithms to the mix and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Thankfully, we get to learn from my friend, Lauren Cunningham, who owns her own social media and marketing agency where she helps other female founders build their businesses online.

Keep an eye on special sounds and audios that trend during that time. It's such a fun time -- lots of holiday music and sounds will be popular.
Consider doing something special for the 12 Days of Christmas, which is a good way to create consistency. Keep it light and fun!
Remember people are likely running 1 million different directions in the month of December. Their attention spans aren't going to be what they would typically be. They are being inundated with links to shop and things to try. I think December is a good time to build brand awareness and have fun with trendy content. Then you can get back to the more educational content in January!
Find a few accounts you admire in your industry and see how they approach the holidays on social media. It can be so helpful to look at other accounts and see what's working/what is not working for them!

Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 16 - When I'm Carrying Too Much by Bethany Kimsey

My attempt to "do-it-all" shines brightest when it's time to carry in groceries. Sure, it's a lot and it's heavy, and yeah, I pushed it in a cart at the store, but now that it's time to carry it in the house, I decide to do this all in one trip. Deep breath.

Do you do this too? Maybe not with groceries but with all the various bags and burdens you carry for the day?

This tendency is something my friend, Bethany Kimsey has experienced too. She's sharing her reflection of Psalm 16 to help us surrender this load we're carrying to God and experience His freedom and the lightness He offers us today.

As a mother to 8 children, Bethany Kimsey has seen God radically change her messy motherhood from weary, anxious, and frantic to peaceful, joyful, and triumphant. She helps weary mothers win the battle against worry and fatigue as they understand their identity in Christ and rest in the hope of the Gospel in community with other moms. Maybe this Summer, foreign is exactly what you need. But no bags need to be packed. Not a single one. No airline reservations need to be made. You see, praise in times of plenty, that's easy. It's natural. But praise in want, it's never easy. It's unnatural. Foreign may be an even better word. It feels strange, unfamiliar, unsettling.

That's because it is. Praise and rejoicing in things go well is proof of citizenship on earth, meaning everyone is capable of this. Praise and rejoicing, gratitude and proclaiming God's greatness and goodness, when things don't go as well as we hoped or expect - it's proof of citizenship in heaven. Only those filled with the power of the Holy Spirit are equipped to do such an unearthly thing.

Today, Sarah Freymuth is sharing her reflection of Psalm 79 with us and helping us remember to proclaim God's praise, and live as foreigners of this earth, in those times when we feel the rug has slid out from under us.

Sarah Freymuth describes herself as a writer and dreamer who finds God's goodness in the everyday, upside-down, and in-between moments that make this life real, relatable and beautiful. Perhaps you too are familiar with this verse. You've heard it or read it. Perhaps you didn't know it was in Psalm 30, but you've been encouraged by this scripture before.

This week, Luke Helms, a long-time friend of Will and I's and of ours here at The Good Day, is back again and sharing key insight from Revelation on this verse.

Luke lives in Oklahoma City, where he has found a wonderful community of believers at Crossings Community Church. He has an insatiable desire to learn and write about the interconnectedness and symbolism of the Bible. Luke enjoys trying new restaurants, traveling (nineteen countries and twenty-four states so far), and going to Thunder games. He serves as an attorney at a local law firm and serves as Chairman of the Board for Willow Pregnancy Support.
