The idea

A character is not just a name and a costume. If you remove the core posture, habits, and competence that define the myth, you have not modernized the character - you have replaced it.

Why it matters

Audiences do not mainly resist change. They resist betrayal of the character contract. Once that contract is broken, every scene starts to feel irritating because the foundational trust is gone.

In practice

Batman is supposed to be secretive, tactical, self-sufficient, and intimidating from the shadows. Here he becomes front-facing, dependent, and visibly unsure of himself, so even scenes that should be cool feel wrong.

When those signals point in different directions, the audience notices the contradiction even if they cannot name it. A Batman who stomps, broods, and uses antiquated-looking tech feels like three different characters stitched together.

In practice

The suit says tank, the fighting says brawler, the detective tools say retro, and the behavior says insecure. None of those combine into Batman, so even technically impressive scenes feel wrong.
