Twenty-five years later, September 11, 2001, is still more than a date in history.

For Tug, it is personal.

On the morning of September 11, he was supposed to be inside the Pentagon, sitting beside his friend and colleague Gerry Moran after the morning intelligence brief. But he was running late. A phone call moved their meeting to 1:00 p.m.

At 9:37:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.

Gerry never made it to one o’clock.

Tug did.

In this deeply personal episode of Olde Salty Bastards – The Show, Tug looks back on the people he knew and worked with who were lost that morning, the 184 people killed in the attack on the Pentagon, and the passengers and crew of United Flight 93 who fought back before the aircraft came down near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

This episode is not about replaying the images everyone has already seen a thousand times.

It is about the people.

The coworkers.

The friends.

The service members.

The civilians.

The passengers.

The crew.

The families who never got another phone call, another dinner, another birthday, or another ordinary day together.

Everybody keeps saying the American Dream is dead.

Tug doesn’t buy it.

The dream isn’t dead.

The sales pitch is bullshit.

In Episode 13 of Olde Salty Bastards — The Show, Tug takes aim at the version of the American Dream a lot of us were sold growing up:

Go to school.
Get a degree.
Find a good job.
Work your ass off for 40 years.
Buy a house.
Retire comfortably.

Simple, right?

Except somewhere along the way, the price of admission changed while people kept repeating the same old fucking instructions.

Housing costs exploded. College became a mountain of debt. Wages didn’t always keep pace. Companies stopped rewarding loyalty the way they once did. And plenty of people did exactly what they were told and still found themselves wondering why the math doesn’t work.

But that doesn’t mean opportunity disappeared.

It means the old roadmap doesn’t necessarily lead where it used to.

The American Dream was never supposed to mean everybody follows the exact same path.

It’s about having the opportunity to build something better — whether that means owning a home, starting a business, learning a trade, changing careers, creating something of your own, or simply having enough control over your life that somebody else doesn’t get to decide what success looks like for you.

The dream is still there.

You may just have to stop following somebody else’s fucking directions to find it.

More than 260 days deployed. More than 200 days without a normal port call. Reports of food shortages, hygiene problems, broken equipment, exhausted sailors, and morale issues aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have turned the carrier into the latest political shitstorm.

Tug has a different perspective.

He served aboard USS America (CV-66) in the 1990s, back when there was no Wi-Fi, no FaceTime, barely a fucking light in your rack, port calls could disappear without warning, and sometimes Navy chow became its own gastrointestinal weapons program.

In this episode, Tug takes on the Lincoln controversy, the difference between legitimate negligence and ordinary military hardship, the outrage crowd that suddenly thinks deployment is supposed to be comfortable, and the politicians using sailors as ammunition.

He also gets into his own carrier stories, including a canceled Persian Gulf port call after transiting the Suez Canal, JP-5 flavored water, bug juice, MREs, the legendary chili-mac chemical attack, and Lance Corporal Zachary Mayo—the Marine who went overboard from USS America, survived roughly 36 hours at sea, and later became the subject of a 93-page Navy investigation.

There are legitimate problems that should be fixed.

Feed the sailors.
Give them safe water.
Fix the sanitation problems.
Take mental health seriously.
Take care of your fucking people.

But being tired, pissed off, eating shitty food, missing liberty, and wanting to come home does not automatically mean the Navy is abusing you.

Sometimes deployment just fucking sucks.

Sometimes you embrace the suck.

And sometimes the answer really is:

Because survival is not the finish line.

It is the starting line.

He came because he had heard Dale’s garage was a place where a guy could stand without having to explain himself.

But purpose, structure, service, movement, brotherhood, professional help, and posttraumatic growth can turn surviving into actually living again.

Reality has officially become a South Park episode.

Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom — 6'10", 250 pounds and the third overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft — says he's declaring himself a prospect for the 2027 WNBA Draft.

Then former NBA first-round pick Royce White decided to join the party.

His contribution?

He's declared that he's transgender — specifically, that he sometimes identifies as a woman "for the purposes of professional basketball."

Oh, and apparently his wig is in the mail.

The emergency was that he was too high. On weed. Officers arrived

to find him on the floor in the fetal position, surrounded by what

the police report officially described as "a plethora of Doritos,

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, and Chips Ahoy cookies." He told them he

couldn't feel his hands. Then he handed over his car keys so they

could search it. Then he refused the ambulance.

That is where this one starts, and it goes downhill from there in

the best way.

This episode is about the one job in America where everybody's an

expert, nobody wants to do it, and the same people trashing it on

a Tuesday are dialing it on a Friday night. Tug gets into National

Police Week and the 363 names added to the memorial wall this year.

Why "hold bad cops accountable" and "I hate all of you on principle"

are not the same sentence. And what happens when one human being

gets dropped into every flavor of chaos this country manufactures
