In this Acts 23:1–11 Bible study, Paul stands before the Sanhedrin, gets struck in the mouth at the command of the high priest Ananias, watches the council erupt over the resurrection of the dead, and is dragged away by Roman soldiers.

Then night falls.

And Jesus comes near.

Acts 23 turns one chaotic courtroom scene into something much bigger: a story about resurrection hope, Christian courage, faithfulness, failure, religious power, Paul the Apostle, the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the presence of Christ when the road ahead makes absolutely no sense.

Paul spent the day telling them there is a resurrection.

That night the Resurrected One stood beside him.

And Jesus does something remarkable: He interprets Paul’s apparent failure differently.

The crowd rioted.
The council rioted.
Paul ended up back in the Roman barracks.

From the outside, Jerusalem looks like a catastrophe.

Jesus says:

“You have testified about me in Jerusalem.”

Faithfulness is not always identical to immediate effectiveness.

Then comes tomorrow:

“You must testify also in Rome.”

Paul cannot see Rome. He does not know the route. He does not know about the conspiracy, the soldiers, the hearings, the ship, the storm, the shipwreck, or the island still ahead of him.

He gets the destination without the itinerary.

And maybe that is part of faith.

Not knowing every turn.

Not pretending everything is easy.

But hearing the risen Christ say:

I’m still here.
You are not finished.
Take courage.

Then Paul says one word.

Gentiles.

And the crowd explodes.

In this Acts 22 sermon, we follow the Apostle Paul onto the Roman stairs in Jerusalem and ask why a crowd willing to hear about miracles, conversion, Scripture, and Jesus could no longer listen when grace crossed the boundary they had drawn.

“They stopped listening when they realized where grace was headed.”

Acts 22 is not finally a story about whether we believe in grace in the abstract. It asks a harder question: Do I still believe in grace when Jesus tells me who it is for?

Paul knows this crowd because he used to be this crowd. He knows religious zeal. He knows what it is to have Scripture, institutional approval, sincerity, and absolute confidence—and still be catastrophically mistaken about what God is doing.

Then grace interrupts him.

Jesus meets Paul while he is still carrying the warrants. Ananias walks into the room and calls his persecutor Brother Saul. And years later, standing bruised and chained in Jerusalem, Paul tells the people trying to kill him that the God they worship is bigger than the boundaries they have drawn.

The question hanging over Acts 22 is the question hanging over every church, every Christian, and every generation:

What is my “up to this word”?

And when Jesus says, “Them too,” can I keep listening?

Acts 12 contains one of the strangest, funniest, and most painfully human scenes in the Book of Acts.

James is dead. Herod Agrippa sees that the execution plays well with the crowd, so Peter is next. Rome throws sixteen soldiers, chains, locked doors, and an iron gate at one Galilean fisherman.

And Peter sleeps.

Then an angel has to hit him awake.

The chains fall. Peter puts on his sandals. He follows the angel past two guard posts and reaches the iron gate—the gate Rome built to make sure everyone understood who controlled the exits.

Luke says it opened by itself — automatē.

No key.
No hand.

The whole machinery of imperial security simply gives way.

But then Peter reaches the house of Mary, where the church has been praying all night for God to save him.

He knocks.

Rhoda recognizes his voice, gets so excited that she forgets to open the door, runs back inside, and announces that Peter is standing outside.

And the people praying for Peter’s rescue tell her:

“You’re crazy.”

That is the genius of Acts 12.

The empire’s gate opens without a human hand.

The church’s gate requires one.

And suddenly this isn’t merely a story about whether God can break somebody out of prison.

That question gets answered pretty quickly.

The harder question is:

Can the church open its own front door when the answer to its prayer is standing on the other side?

This episode explores Acts 12, Peter’s miraculous prison escape, Rhoda, Herod Agrippa, James the brother of John, answered prayer, doubt, grace, the early church, and what happens when God’s answer doesn’t look like the answer we rehearsed.

Because Peter does not stop knocking.

And answered prayer does not abandon the people who asked for it merely because they’re slow to open the door.

“She is more righteous than I.”

In this Wednesday night Bible study from First Christian Church in Cushing, Oklahoma, we step carefully into the story of Tamar and Judah. This is not a clean story, but Scripture does not always give us clean stories. It gives us truthful ones.

Tamar is sent back to her father’s house with a promise Judah never intends to keep. She waits. She watches. And when the man who owes her justice refuses to give it, she brings the truth into the open using Judah’s own signet, cord, and staff.

This episode asks a hard question:

What if the scandal in Genesis 38 is not what Tamar did at the gate, but what Judah failed to do in his own house?

We look at Tamar not as an embarrassment in the family tree, but as the woman who kept the line alive. Through her son Perez, Tamar becomes part of the messianic genealogy named in Matthew 1. She is not hidden from the story of Jesus. She is written into it.

In Acts 17:16–34, the Apostle Paul walks into Athens with no shared Bible, no Abraham, no Moses, no prophets—and somehow preaches Jesus anyway.

Standing before the Areopagus, surrounded by Stoics, Epicureans, temples, idols, philosophers, and centuries of Greek thought, Paul does something remarkable. He doesn’t begin by telling Athens that everything it knows is worthless. He begins with something they already know they don’t know.

An altar.

A confession carved into stone.

We may have missed something.

Paul takes that little crack in the marble and walks straight through it.

He quotes their poets. He speaks their language. He recognizes the longing underneath their religion. And then he tells them the astonishing thing they have been reaching toward without knowing its name:

“He is not far from each one of us.”

But Paul doesn’t leave them with philosophy, poetry, or vague spirituality. Everything moves toward Jesus and the resurrection.

Some mock him. Some want to hear more. Some believe.

And Paul lets all three responses stand.

In this Acts 15 Bible study and sermon, Pastor Jim Wilhelm examines the Jerusalem Council, Peter’s defense of Gentile believers, James’s use of Amos 9, and the church’s decision not to burden people whom God had already welcomed. When some believers insist that Gentiles must be circumcised and obey the Law of Moses to be saved, Peter stands and makes a startling confession:

“We believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” — Acts 15:11

Peter does not merely argue that Gentiles can be saved like Jewish believers. He reverses the comparison. The uncircumcised Gentiles—welcomed by God, cleansed by faith, and given the Holy Spirit—become the evidence that everyone is saved on the same terms: through the grace of Jesus Christ.

Most Bible studies on Ruth begin with the beautiful words, “Where you go, I will go.” And they are beautiful. But Ruth 1 begins somewhere else: with a famine in Bethlehem, the House of Bread.

Why does the House of Bread have no bread?

In this episode of Little Women, we look at Ruth not as a simple romance story, but as a deeply theological story about famine, exile, Naomi’s grief, Ruth’s loyalty, Moab, belonging, and the covenant line that leads to David and ultimately to Jesus.

Naomi leaves Bethlehem empty. Ruth returns with her. Orpah walks away. And on that road between Moab and Bethlehem, the Bible asks a question most of us miss: what happens when the people of God have to leave the place of provision to find the very person God will use to restore it?

Pentecost didn't replace Shavuot. Pentecost is Shavuot arriving at its appointed harvest. The feast of firstfruits, the giving of Torah at Sinai, and the scroll of Ruth — three layers of the same feast, all pointed in the same direction, all saying the same thing for a thousand years: the harvest was always headed past the border.

When the Spirit fell and every person heard the mighty works of God in their own language — that wasn't a new program. That was the grain head breaking the surface of a field that had been growing in the dark since October.

Most of us have heard this passage preached as a simple message about gratitude: ten men were healed, only one came back, so be thankful. And gratitude is certainly there. But Jesus does not ask, “Where are the ungrateful ones?” He asks, “Were there none found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?”

That word matters.

In this sermon from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Cushing, Oklahoma, we walk the border road between Samaria and Galilee, where ten men with leprosy cry out to Jesus from a distance. Jesus tells them to go show themselves to the priests, and as they go, they are cleansed. But one man, a Samaritan, turns back.

The nine keep walking toward the priest. The one comes back to Jesus. The nine are cleansed. The one hears, “Your faith has made you well.”

This sermon explores the difference between being cleansed and being made whole, between religious certification and worshipful recognition, between obeying the command and recognizing the Presence.

Most of us have heard Genesis 16 as a chapter in Abraham’s story. Sarai cannot bear children. Abram listens to Sarai. Hagar is given to Abram. A child is conceived. The household fractures. Hagar runs. And then, eventually, the “main story” seems to get back on track with Isaac, the promised son.

But what if Genesis 16 is asking us to notice something else?

What if this is not merely a side chapter in Abraham’s story?

What if the chapter starts in Sarai’s tent, but ends at Hagar’s well?

In this study, we look closely at one of the most astonishing details hiding in plain sight:

“She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her…” — Genesis 16:13

Hagar names God.

Not Sarah. Not Rebekah. Not Miriam. Not Deborah. Hagar.

An Egyptian. A servant. A runaway. A foreign woman with no standing, no inheritance, no protection, and no claim on the covenant household that had used her body and then refused responsibility for her pain.

And yet, on the road to Shur, beside a spring of water in the wilderness, the angel of Yahweh finds her. God speaks her name. God hears her affliction. God promises her a future. And Hagar responds by giving God a name:

That name sticks.

The well gets named after it. The geography of the desert is permanently altered by the theology of a pregnant runaway slave woman on a dirt road going nowhere.

This Bible study explores the story of Hagar not as background scenery in Abraham’s life, but as one of the most profound revelations of God’s character in Genesis. We examine the movement of the passage, the verbs of the story, the power dynamics in Sarai and Abram’s household, the danger of misusing “return and submit” language, and the pastoral good news that God meets Hagar outside the household, outside the center, outside the place where everyone assumed the promise was happening.

God does not wait for Hagar to come back.

God goes after her.

God does not begin with correction.

God begins with a question:

“Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?”

This episode of The Semi-Seminarian Podcast, “Basket Case! Saul Escapes Damascus in a Basket,” follows Saul after the Damascus Road conversion. The light has flashed. The scales have fallen. Ananias has called him brother. Saul is preaching Jesus as the Son of God. But the man who came to Damascus with warrants now has to leave Damascus through a window in a basket.

Saul entered Damascus with power, authority, and letters from the high priest. He leaves Damascus lowered through the city wall by unnamed disciples holding ropes in the dark. The hunter becomes the hunted. The persecutor becomes the preacher. The man who once dragged Christians away is now being rescued by Christians.

But Acts 9 does not let the story stay easy.

When Saul comes to Jerusalem, the disciples are afraid of him. They do not believe he is really a disciple. And honestly, who can blame them? They remember Stephen. They remember the stones. They remember the coats. They remember the warrants. They remember what Saul did before Jesus stopped him on the road.

This Acts 9 sermon asks the hard question at the center of Christian faith, church life, grace, repentance, and discipleship:

Jesus has healed Saul — but will the church believe Him?

This Bible study explores Saul’s conversion, the early church’s fear, the role of Barnabas, and the difference between grace and trust. Grace can be immediate. Trust may take time. A healthy church knows the difference.

Barnabas does not erase Saul’s past. He does not shame the disciples for being afraid. He does not demand cheap reconciliation. Barnabas bears witness. He builds a porch. He stands between Saul and the apostles long enough for testimony, caution, mercy, and wisdom to share the same space.

In this episode of The Semi-Seminarian Podcast, Pastor Jim Wilhelm walks through Acts 4:32–5:11 and the terrifying story of Ananias and Sapphira — not as a simple “give more money” sermon, but as a hard and holy text about truth, fear, performance, and the presence of the Holy Spirit in the newborn church.

The early church was living in resurrection power. They were “of one heart and soul.” No one claimed their possessions as their own. Barnabas sold a field and laid the proceeds at the apostles’ feet. Then Ananias walked into the same room with a different spirit.

Peter makes the key point clear: the land was his, the money was his, and he was free to give all of it, none of it, or part of it. The sin was not that Ananias held something back. The sin was that he brought part and called it whole.

In Acts 8, Stephen has just been stoned, Saul is ravaging the church, and the believers are scattered from Jerusalem into Judea and Samaria. But what looks like persecution becomes proclamation. Saul thinks he is stomping out a fire, but every door he kicks in scatters another ember into dry grass.

This episode of The Semi-Seminarian walks through Acts 8:1–8 and Acts 8:26–40, where Philip preaches Christ in Samaria and then follows the Spirit onto the desert road to Gaza. There he meets the Ethiopian eunuch, a powerful court official under Candace, queen of Ethiopia, returning from worship in Jerusalem and reading Isaiah 53.

This is not just a story about baptism. This is a story about grace arriving before anybody has time to build a gate around it.

The Ethiopian eunuch is reading the suffering servant passage from Isaiah: “In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away. Who will declare his generation?” And just a few inches farther in the same scroll, Isaiah 56 promises eunuchs an everlasting name that will not be cut off. One passage names his exclusion. The next passage promises his inclusion. He is holding both in his hands, and he does not yet know which one wins.

Then Philip climbs into the chariot, opens the Scripture, preaches Jesus, and when they come to water, the eunuch asks the question that still echoes through the church:

“What is keeping me from being baptized?”

Acts 8 is the chapter that makes Acts 9 make sense. Damascus does not start the outward mission. Damascus catches Saul up to what the Spirit is already doing. Philip got there first. Samaria got there first. The desert road got there first. Isaiah got there first. The Spirit got there first.

In Acts 14, Paul and Barnabas preach boldly in Iconium until a violent plot forces them to leave. In Lystra, Paul heals a man who had never walked—but the crowd mistakes Paul and Barnabas for the Greek gods Hermes and Zeus. Their celebration quickly turns violent when opponents arrive from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium, persuade the crowd, stone Paul, and drag him outside the city believing he is dead.

But Paul rises, walks back into Lystra, and continues preaching the gospel.

Then he makes an even harder choice.

Instead of taking the shorter and safer road home, Paul retraces the path through Lystra, Iconium, and Pisidian Antioch—the same towns where he had been threatened, rejected, and attacked. He does not return to settle an argument with the crowd. He returns to strengthen the disciples, appoint elders, encourage the churches, and remind them:

“It is through many afflictions that we must enter into God’s Kingdom.” —Acts 14:22

The Long Way Home is a sermon about Christian perseverance, spiritual discernment, faithful leadership, and knowing when to stay, when to leave, and who to go back for.

Acts 14 teaches us that apostolic courage is not a martyr complex. Sometimes faithfulness means refusing to be intimidated. Sometimes faithfulness means leaving before violence consumes the mission. And sometimes the road home leads back through the places that wounded us—not to win over the crowd, but to care for the people grace has left behind.

This Acts 11 Bible study examines Peter’s return to Jerusalem after the conversion of Cornelius and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles. The Jerusalem church has already heard the news—but their first accusation is not about Peter preaching the gospel, baptizing Gentiles, or witnessing a new Pentecost.

Their charge is simple: “You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

Acts 11:1–18 reveals one of the most important turning points in early church history. Peter explains the vision of the unclean animals, his visit to Cornelius, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the moment he realized that resisting Gentile inclusion would mean standing in God’s way.

Peter does not defend Cornelius by arguing that he was an unusually respectable Gentile. He does not plead the case of the “good outsider.” Instead, Peter testifies that God gave the Gentiles the same gift of the Holy Spirit given to Jewish believers at Pentecost.

Cornelius was baptized into Christ. Peter was put on trial for the table.

This Acts 11 sermon challenges Christians, churches, pastors, and Bible study groups to ask whether our boundaries reflect the will of God—or whether we are calling resistance faithfulness. The church cannot control the Holy Spirit, place grace on trial, or require people to become like us before God is allowed to welcome them.

Peter entered Jerusalem as the accused. His testimony quietly placed Jerusalem on trial.

The question still confronts the church today:

Who are we to stand in God’s way?

What if she did not outsmart Him, outlast Him, or pass some hidden test?

What if she simply recognized something from the floor that everyone at the table had missed?

In Mark 7:24–30, Jesus enters the region of Tyre and tries to remain hidden, but Mark tells us, “He couldn’t be hidden.” A Greek, Syrophoenician woman comes to Him begging for her daughter, who is afflicted by an unclean spirit. Jesus answers with one of the hardest sayings in the Gospels:

“Let the children be filled first, for it isn’t appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

And she answers:

“Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

This sermon, “Crumbs for the Dogs,” explores why Jesus says, “For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter.” Not for her persistence. Not because she won an argument. Not because she earned her way to the table. But because she spoke a true word about who God is and what kind of table God sets.

She heard first and did not hear never.

She recognized abundance from the floor.

And that matters two weeks before Pentecost.

Because Pentecost is not God abandoning Israel’s table. Pentecost is Israel’s table overflowing into the nations. Before the fire falls in Acts 2, before every nation hears the mighty works of God in its own tongue, a foreign woman in Tyre already speaks a true word about the feast.

The table does not run out.

The bread is still being broken.

And grace has always been falling from the edges.

In the wilderness of Numbers 21, the people of Israel reach a breaking point. The journey is long, the desert feels endless, and the daily miracle of manna has started to look like nothing more than another burden. Their exhaustion turns into a dangerous story: God brought us here to die.

Then the snakes come.

But the strangest part of the story isn’t the judgment—it’s the cure. God does not remove the serpents. Instead, He tells Moses to lift a bronze serpent on a pole. Anyone who has been bitten can look at it—and live.

Centuries later, Jesus stands in the dark with Nicodemus and says something astonishing:

“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up.” — John 3:14

The cross, it turns out, is the bronze serpent.

In Acts 6, the church is growing — and growth always exposes the distance between what you say you are and what your systems actually deliver. The Hellenist widows (Greek-speaking diaspora Jews) are being neglected in the daily distribution while the Hebrew widows get full portions. This isn't Jew versus Gentile. That earthquake comes later in Acts 10. This is family business. This is inside the house.

And here's the turn most Bible studies walk right past: the church doesn't just apologize and try harder next week. It hands the ladle to the people it had been skipping. The seven men chosen — Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, Nicolaus — every one of them bears a Greek name. The neglected community doesn't get a better slot in the line. They get authority over the line. That's not delegation. That's repentance with structure.

We dig into the Greek: "serve tables" (diakonein trapezais) shares the same root as "the ministry of the word" (diakonia tou logou). Same word. Same dignity. Luke isn't building a hierarchy — he's building a parallel. The pulpit and the food line are equally holy ground.

Then we trace the echo back to Numbers 11, where Moses cries "I cannot carry all these people by myself," and God puts the Spirit on seventy elders. Eldad and Medad prophesy outside the tent. Joshua says stop them. Moses answers with the most dangerous sentence in the Old Testament: "Would that all the LORD's people were prophets." Acts 6 is the beginning of that prayer getting answered — and when Stephen's accusers drag him before the Sanhedrin to spit the word "Moses" like a weapon, his face shines like Sinai itself.

They wanted a lawbreaker. They got Sinai.

This study asks the question underneath the text: Where's the crack in YOUR food line? The place in your church, your community, your own house where somebody's been getting less — not nothing, just less, slower, smaller. Because Acts 6 says that crack is not a problem to be fixed. It's a sermon to be heard. The Spirit moves through cracks, not credentials. And it refuses to stay in the lane you assigned it.

After Saul’s dramatic conversion on the Damascus Road, after Ananias lays hands on him, after Barnabas vouches for him in Jerusalem, the church sends Saul home to Tarsus — and then Luke turns the camera away from the famous convert.

Acts 9:31–43 takes us to Lydda and Joppa, where Peter is not building a platform, launching a movement, or chasing a headline. Peter is making house calls. He finds Aeneas, a paralyzed man who has been bedridden for eight years, and says, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed.” Then Peter is called to Joppa, where a beloved disciple named Tabitha, also called Dorcas, has died. The widows gather in grief, holding the garments she made for them, and Peter kneels beside the body and says, “Tabitha, get up.” She opens her eyes.

Then heaven interrupts.

An angel wakes Peter up, his chains fall off, the prison gates open by themselves, and Peter walks free into the Jerusalem night. By the time Saul gets to Damascus, the Holy Spirit has already outrun him. The gospel has already crossed into Samaria. Philip has already baptized the Ethiopian eunuch. The circle has already widened. Saul thinks he is going to Damascus to stop the church, but Jesus meets him in the road and stops Saul.

This episode of The Semi-Seminarian Podcast is a deep Bible study and sermon on Acts 9, the Damascus Road, Saul’s conversion, Paul’s calling, and the terrifying mercy of Jesus Christ. But this is not just a simple “bad man becomes good man” story. Saul was not an atheist. Saul was not ignorant of Scripture. Saul was deeply religious, trained under Gamaliel, zealous for the God of Israel, and absolutely certain he was right.

And he was wrong enough to kill for it.

Acts 9 shows us that the risen Jesus does not merely rescue people who are lost. Sometimes Jesus stops people who are certain. Sometimes grace interrupts religious violence. Sometimes mercy knocks a man into the dust before it raises him into his calling.

On the Damascus Road, Jesus asks Saul, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Not “my followers.” Not “my church.” Me. Every hand Saul laid on the people of Jesus, Jesus felt. Every door Saul threatened to open, Christ was standing on the other side.

But the story does not end on the road. It moves to a house on Straight Street, where Ananias is told to go lay hands on the very man who came to arrest people like him. Before Saul preaches a sermon, writes Romans, plants churches, or bears any visible fruit, Ananias calls him “Brother Saul.”

That is not cheap grace. That is resurrection faith with trembling hands.

In Matthew’s Epiphany story, strangers arrive in Jerusalem asking about a newborn king. The priests and scribes know exactly where to point them. They quote the prophecy. They name Bethlehem. And then they stay home.

This episode sits with the ones who knew the answer but didn’t go looking.

Set in the quiet days just after Christmas, this sermon explores how knowledge can become insulation, how certainty can replace seeking, and how faith can slowly turn into management instead of movement. Before the wise men ever arrive at the house, Scripture asks us to linger with the uncomfortable truth that proximity to God’s Word doesn’t always produce encounter.

This is Epiphany in two parts. Today is about the ones who stayed put. Next week, we’ll follow the ones who moved.

You’ve wandered into a small-town church in Oklahoma, just after the miracle has gone quiet. Stay a while. This might be closer than you think.

In this Acts 10 Bible study, we examine Peter’s vision, Cornelius the Roman centurion, the meaning of clean and unclean, the conversion of Cornelius, the baptism of the Gentiles, and the moment Peter declares that God shows no partiality.

This passage is often reduced to a lesson about food laws, but Peter explains the vision himself: “God has shown me that I shouldn’t call any man unholy or unclean.” The animals are the image. People are the point.

Peter believes he is bringing God into a Gentile house. Instead, he discovers that God is already there.

The prayers have already risen. The angel has already spoken. The household has already gathered. The Spirit has already moved.

Acts 10 reveals a central truth of the gospel: the church does not control the Holy Spirit. The church is called to recognize where the Holy Spirit is already at work.

This sermon explores:

Cornelius obeys immediately. Peter resists three times.

That reversal matters.

The outsider is ready to receive. The apostle is still learning how wide grace has become.

Peter says, “Not so, Lord,” but those words cannot live together for long. Either Jesus is Lord, or Peter gets to keep the boundaries exactly where he prefers them. Acts 10 forces the question every church must eventually answer: will we follow the Spirit through the open door, or stand in the doorway defending a boundary God has already crossed?

This chapter is not only about the conversion of Cornelius. It is also about the conversion of Peter’s imagination.

Cornelius is converted to Christ. Peter is converted to what Christ means.

The Holy Spirit interrupts the sermon before Peter can finish. God does not wait for the conclusion, the invitation, the committee meeting, or the institutional approval. The Spirit falls on the Gentiles, and Peter asks the only question left:

“Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water?”

Acts keeps asking the same question:

Who is going to stop God?

In this Acts 19 Bible study, Pastor Jim Wilhelm follows Luke’s remarkable contrast between incomplete faith and borrowed faith.

Apollos was accurate—but unfinished. The disciples Paul meets in Ephesus know only John’s baptism, yet they receive what they had never been told was available. Then the seven sons of Sceva attempt to cast out an evil spirit using “the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”

The response is unforgettable:

“Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”

That question exposes the heart of Acts 19.

The problem is not incomplete knowledge. Incomplete knowledge can grow.

The danger is religious fluency without participation—knowing the words, invoking the name, imitating the power, while never allowing the life of Jesus to take hold of your own.

Most sermons on the centurion focus on humility: "Lord, I'm not worthy for you to come under my roof." And that matters. But what if the centurion is doing more than bowing low? What if he is being precise? What if this Roman officer understands something about authority, the Word, and the kingdom of God that the insiders standing closest to Jesus have not yet seen?

And then he looks at Jesus and says, in essence: your Word carries farther than my empire ever could.

That is why this story is bigger than a healing miracle. This is not just about a sick servant in Capernaum. This is about the reach of the Word of God. It is about outsiders seeing what insiders miss. It is about Jesus announcing that many will come from the east and the west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

The warning is not that outsiders are coming in.

The warning is that insiders can sit so close to the promise that they mistake nearness for faith.

Right after the Jerusalem Council settles the biggest theological question in the early church — grace is enough, full stop — two of its greatest champions have a fight so sharp (the Greek word is paroxysmos) that they part ways for good. Barnabas wants to give John Mark a second chance. Paul refuses. Luke never tells us who was right.

This study walks through Acts 15:36-41, the Paul and Barnabas conflict, and traces the thread all the way to 2 Timothy 4:11, where a much older Paul writes from a Roman prison and asks for the same man he once rejected — calling him "useful to me in my ministry."

What you'll take away from this episode: Why believing in grace and practicing grace toward someone who hurt you are two different battles. The real difference between the Greek word paroxysmos and a simple disagreement. Why Barnabas's track record (Saul in Jerusalem, the Gentiles in Antioch) makes his instinct about Mark worth taking seriously. Why Paul's refusal wasn't hypocrisy but pastoral protection for the churches he'd already lost people from. In this sermon on Acts 16:11–15, Pastor Jim Wilhelm explores Lydia of Thyatira, Paul’s arrival in Philippi, the riverside prayer gathering, and the quiet beginning of the church in Philippi.

Paul crossed the Aegean because of a vision of a man from Macedonia saying, “Come over and help us.” But when Paul arrived, he didn’t find the man from the vision.

He found women praying by the river.

And God was already there.

The Lord opened Lydia’s heart. Then Lydia started opening everything else—her household, her door, her table, her home.

That is the strange, beautiful grammar of grace in Acts 16:

Most Bible studies on Rahab in the Bible focus on the red cord in the window. That image matters. But before Rahab ties the scarlet cord, she gives one of the clearest confessions of faith in the entire book of Joshua: “The LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.”

The whole city of Jericho heard the same reports: the Red Sea, the defeat of Sihon and Og, and Israel’s God on the move. The whole city locked its gates and trusted its walls. Rahab opened her window and trusted the God she had only heard about.

When the spies return to Joshua, they don’t report wall height, troop strength, or gate schedules. They repeat Rahab’s confession with the pronouns changed. She says, “The LORD has given you the land.” They say, “The LORD has delivered into our hands all the land.” They went into Jericho as spies. They came out as her congregation.

This teaching connects Rahab to the women named in Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. Scripture keeps showing the same pattern: God’s covenant moves through unexpected people, foreign households, complicated stories, and witnesses respectable religion might overlook.

Rahab believed before the walls fell. She tied the cord while Jericho still looked permanent. She opened the window before anyone gave her permission. That is faith with dust on its hands.

Paul preached until midnight. Eutychus fell from the third-story window. Paul went downstairs, embraced him, and declared, “His life is in him.” Then the church did something almost stranger than the miracle:

They went back upstairs.

They broke bread.

They ate together.

And Paul kept talking until dawn.

In Acts 19:23–41, the gospel reaches deep enough into Ephesus that it begins changing how people spend their money—and Demetrius the silversmith notices.

Paul hasn’t organized a boycott. Nobody is attacking the temple of Artemis. People simply encounter the living God and begin losing their appetite for gods made with human hands.

Then the receipts start falling.

Demetrius gathers the craftsmen. Economic fear becomes religious outrage. Religious outrage becomes a mob. Soon the theater of Ephesus is filled with thousands shouting the same sentence for two hours—even though Luke tells us most of them don’t know why they’re there.

This is the riot at Ephesus: Acts 19, Artemis, Demetrius, Paul, the Ephesian silversmiths, and what happens when the gospel threatens an economy built around keeping the old gods profitable.

Because sometimes Luke’s evidence that the Word of God is prevailing isn’t a revival.

It’s a riot.

At midnight, Paul and Silas are praying and singing hymns while the other prisoners listen. Suddenly, the prison foundations shake, the chains fall loose, and every door swings open. The Philippian jailer awakens, sees the open cells, and prepares to take his own life.

Then Paul cries from the darkness:

“Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.”

Paul could have escaped—but his freedom would have cost another man his life. So he stays.

But this Acts 13 Bible study is not only about missionaries leaving home. It is about a church learning to open its hands.

Throughout the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit moves first and the church struggles to catch up. Philip preaches in Samaria. The Ethiopian eunuch is baptized on a desert road. Peter enters the home of Cornelius and watches the Holy Spirit fall upon the Gentiles. But in Acts 13:1–12, something changes. For the first time, a local congregation hears the Spirit before the journey begins and willingly releases its own leaders into God’s mission.

“As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” — Acts 13:2

The church at Antioch was led by an extraordinary gathering of prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, and Saul. Different histories, cultures, social positions, and personal stories had been gathered around one table by the grace of Jesus Christ.

Then the Holy Spirit asked that church to release two of its strongest teachers.

The church opened its hands—and the gospel left home.

Barnabas and Saul travel to Cyprus with John Mark and proclaim the Word of God in the synagogues. In Paphos, they encounter Sergius Paulus, a Roman proconsul who wants to hear the gospel, and Elymas the sorcerer, a false prophet determined to stand between a searching man and the truth.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Saul confronts Elymas, and temporary blindness falls upon him. The scene deliberately echoes Saul’s own experience on the Damascus Road: darkness, helplessness, and the need for someone to lead him by the hand. Paul does not give Elymas death. He gives him darkness with an expiration date.

It is during this confrontation that Luke writes, “Saul, who was also called Paul.” The church released him, the road revealed him, and the mission to the Gentiles moved forward.

In Acts 5:12–16, Luke gives us one of the strangest and most powerful scenes in the New Testament. The early church is gathered in Solomon’s Portico after the terrifying story of Ananias and Sapphira. Great fear has come upon the whole church. The performance has been exposed. The captions have died. And then, immediately, mercy starts spilling into the street.

This Bible study explores Acts 5 and the healing power associated with Peter’s shadow — but not as a superhero story, a magic trick, or a faith-healer origin scene. Luke never says Peter’s shadow healed anyone. He says the people carried the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across them.

That detail matters.

This episode asks a deeper question: not “What power was in Peter’s shadow?” but “What made those people willing to be seen?”

In a world built on honor and shame, being carried into the public street on a mat was costly. It meant your need, weakness, sickness, torment, and desperation were visible to everybody. And yet Acts 5 shows us people whose desperation finally outran their shame.

In Acts 20:13–38, Paul summons the Ephesian elders to Miletus for one of the most emotional scenes in the Book of Acts — his final farewell to the church he spent three years teaching, serving, warning, and loving.

The ship is waiting. Jerusalem lies ahead. Paul knows suffering is coming, and he knows these friends may never see his face again.

But before he leaves, Paul tells them what will remain when he is gone:

“Now, brothers, I entrust you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up…” — Acts 20:32

Paul does not leave them another Paul.

He leaves them God and the word of His grace.

In this Acts 13 Bible study, we begin Paul's First Missionary Journey and witness one of the greatest turning points in the Book of Acts. After years of the Holy Spirit preparing the church, Barnabas and Saul are finally set apart and sent from the church at Antioch to proclaim the gospel throughout the Roman world.

But the mission immediately meets resistance.

What do faithful Christians do when obedience leads to opposition?

In Acts 18:24–28, Paul leaves Ephesus—but the gospel does not leave with him. Luke stays behind with Apollos, Priscilla, and Aquila, and suddenly we see an early church that no longer depends on one apostle to carry the message.

Apollos is not a false teacher. He is gifted, sincere, powerful in the Scriptures—and unfinished. Priscilla and Aquila do not shame him publicly. They receive him, take him aside, and explain the way of God more accurately.

In Acts 7, Stephen stands before the Sanhedrin accused of speaking against Moses, the law, the temple, and the customs. But Stephen does not offer a polite defense. He tells Israel’s story back to Israel’s leaders — Abraham, Joseph, Moses, the wilderness, the golden calf, the temple — and by the time he is finished, the defendant has become the witness, and the judges are the ones on trial.

This Bible study and sermon walks through Acts 7:51–60, the death of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, and one of the most powerful courtroom scenes in the New Testament. Stephen exposes the terrifying truth beneath religious resistance: before they picked up stones, they covered their ears.

“They cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed at him with one accord.” — Acts 7:57

That is the question at the center of this episode:

Why did they have to stop listening before they could stone him?

Stephen’s sermon was not failing. It was landing. The truth had cut too close. The Sanhedrin heard their own story in his words — the rejection of Joseph, the rejection of Moses, the golden calf, the persecution of the prophets, and now the betrayal of the Righteous One, Jesus Christ.

Acts 7 shows us that holy things can become hiding places. The temple was a gift, but God was never containable. The law was holy, but it was never meant to become a wall against the Holy Spirit. The customs mattered, but they were never meant to protect us from the living God.

In Acts 2, the crowd is cut to the heart and asks, “What shall we do?” In Acts 7, the council is cut to the heart and reaches for stones.

We can let the Word of God open us, or we can cover our ears and start reaching for stones — stones of anger, distraction, control, respectability, busyness, or religion that keeps God at a safe distance.

But even there, grace is already moving.

At the edge of the scene stands a young man named Saul, holding the coats of the men who stone Stephen. Saul approves of Stephen’s death. Saul is complicit. Saul is not yet Paul. But the sermon is already getting into him. The stones silence the preacher, but they do not silence the preaching.

Grace had already started stalking Saul.

And she is stubborn like that.

In this Bible study from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Cushing, Oklahoma, we walk slowly through Deuteronomy 26:1–11, the passage where Israel is commanded to bring a basket of firstfruits before the Lord. But this basket is not just about crops, offerings, tithes, money, or religious obligation. This basket carries memory. This basket carries confession. This basket carries the story of a people who almost did not make it, cried out in bondage, and were heard by God.

This sermon explores the meaning of firstfruits, the biblical background of Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, and how that feast becomes the soil beneath Pentecost in Acts 2. Before Pentecost was a Christian celebration of the Holy Spirit, it stood on the ground of Israel’s harvest festival: a feast of firstfruits, remembrance, gratitude, and trust.

The basket is not a receipt for your labor. The basket is testimony of your deliverance.
