This episode is dedicated to all the victims of the September 11th attacks 25 years ago. This episode is also dedicated to all the victims post 9/11 who lost their lives as a result of the toxic air surrounding ground zero.

After 25 years, are we really safer now than back on 9/11?
We are still dealing with the middle east like we were after the terror attacks.
President Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. Trump lies every day.
The government lied about the air being safe to breathe. That was proven by NYC Mayor Mandami this week.

So how much has really change if you think about it?

If we don't like what is currently happening, we have midterm elections coming up and we can do something about it, by voting and encouraging our clients to vote.

I share a personal story about my ex-wife's struggle with postpartum depression and addiction, highlighting the lack of awareness and resources available to new parents. The healthcare system in the United States is failing and has failed to adequately address postpartum issues and called for more social workers and mental health professionals in hospitals. I also touched on the broader societal need for prevention rather than reaction and encouraged advocacy and voting for change.

Recently the Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr did an interview lying stating ICU beds in cities like NYC were empty during the Covid pandemic. The incompetence and gaslighting the agent orange administation has caused more harm to us, making social workers work harder (cause our jobs were already hard enough). As a result, the most vulnerable populations are being harmed the most.

We literally are seeing outbreaks of measles throughout the country and diseases that we read about in text books returning due to an unqualified secretary of health.

Government Shutdown's Impact on Social Work; #governmentshutdown Episode 238

India shared her experience of working through a government shutdown, describing the initial sense of relief from the usual office stress but noting that the shutdown became more concerning when reduction in force notices were issued on October 10th.

She explained that her division was included in the reduction in force, though the outcome remains uncertain due to ongoing lawsuits. India also discussed the broader context of workplace challenges, including the impact of DEI crackdowns and executive orders on her division's work with grantees, and the burnout she felt after hosting a major convening event just before the shutdown.

India discussed her career transition from social work and public health into maternal and child health, focusing on her role as a public health analyst and project officer at HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau. She oversaw Healthy Start programs across 115 grantees in the US and Puerto Rico, working with nonprofits, universities, and health departments to implement community-based perinatal health services since 1991. India shared her experience working with diverse teams and communities, noting the rewarding nature of her work despite the challenges posed by annual government shutdown threats.

Health HIV recently issued a press release on the 5th Annual National Survey of the state of HIV care in America. The survey discusses the barriers addressing ending the #HIV epidemic such as housing, burned out social workers, PrEP education, treatment priorities among other issues that affect #socialworkers in general. I shares his thoughts on the survey. I currently works in an outpatient HIV clinic providing social work services to adults living with HIV. I describe working with undocumented population who are newly diagnosed with HIV on top of that many having to struggle living with trauma arriving in the U.S. during the Covid pandemic. Social Work Licensure Compact

Drug addiction Recovery & Advocacy: 2 years later

Financial Stress affecting Your Mental Health; Episode 262

Student loan Updates starting July 1st 2026. Episode 269

This episode of The Social Work Rants Podcast, marks the season finale of Season 12 focusing entirely on important student loan updates effective July 1st. Nearly 7 million borrowers would receive 90-day notices from their loan servicers requiring them to choose a new repayment plan, with borrowers who fail to select a plan being automatically enrolled in either a standard plan or new tiered standard plan with higher monthly payments.

The episode detailed various repayment options including the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), Income-Based Repayment (IBR), PAYE, ICR, and the new tiered standard plan, emphasizing that each person's financial situation is unique and requiring careful consideration of personal finances. I recommended following experts and past podcast guest Dr. Sonia Lewis (the student loan doctor) and Robert Farrington (the college investor) for updated information, and stressed the importance of understanding Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) status for those close to forgiveness.

Housing advocacy for disenfranchised individuals in New York City

Marinez is a social work leader dedicated to fighting for social justice and equality for the most vulnerable populations such as the chronically homeless, individuals with serious mental illness, and individuals with HIV/AIDS. Ms. Marinez has twenty years of experience in the non-profit sector, of which fifteen years has been in leadership positions. Her areas of expertise include program development, budgeting, program evaluation, and operational management.

As the Director of Housing Operations at Fountain House- New York, Ms. Marinez has opened a Housing Resource Center (HRC) for the members and staff at the clubhouse. The HRC provides and connects members and staff to internal and external housing options. Ms. Marinez has also created a Slack channel to post housing information and resources. In addition, Ms. Marinez created the Housing Resource Council to expand and establish a new collaboration with New York City providers and federal, state, and city agencies.

Ms. Marinez is also a soon to be co-author of the upcoming Latinx in Social Work Volume 2. The book is scheduled to be released in October 2022.

On July 24, 2025, The National Alliance on Caregiving in collaboration with AARP completed a study on #cargiving in America in 2025. The study showed 63 million Americans are caregivers. One in four adults are providing care for someone with a chronic or disabiliting condition.

Nearly 1/3 of caregivers are caring for both adults with a disability or complex medical conditions and a child under 18. These individuals are know as the sandwich generation.

The host explains the golden opportunity there is for social workers to work in geriatrics not just in direct practice but in the Macro levels especially on the policy side. The host provides where social workers can look for roles to work with older adults.

Food resources; U.S. Government Shut Down; Episode 238

On this episode we are providing food resources for social workers to use for themselves and their clients. We are in a government shutdown. Millions of Americans who receive SNAP (food stamp) benefits will be at risk of not having benefits on November 1st.

Here are some suggestions for folks:

1. The Emergency food Assistance Program (TEFAP)- Offering free groceries monthly for eliginle individuals and families. Available in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. (Household income must be at or below 185% of federal poverty level.

2. Your local state Food Bank (example- Food Bank of Delaware).

3. Your local church.

4. Flashfood.com- It's an app. Download the app, sign up. Enter your zipcode and a list of grocery stores and supermarkets participating will appear. (More stores are added daily).

5. Findhelp.org- Type in your zip code. Provides a list of food pantries. Also assists with housing, transportation and other resources.

6. Your local public assitance/food stamp, Medicaid, Department of social services office.

The changes involve adjusting the rates for session durations, with code 90837 (53 minutes and up) being reimbursed at the same rate as code 90834 (37-52 minute sessions). Basiliso also mentioned the impact of inflation on these changes, citing a recent 4.2% inflation rate.Inflation and Mental Health ConcernsI discuss the impact of inflation on various aspects of life, including healthcare costs and gas prices, noting that while President Biden reduced the national inflation rate, many expenses continue to rise.
