Ep. 50: The Story of Johnny Oliveira

In this episode, Gannon and Bryce interview a former teammate of Bryce's, Johnny Oliveira. Bryce and Johnny spent a year together playing baseball at the collegiate level. They both played for Highland Community College in Freeport, Illinois. Ironically, they both share a birthday of August 20th and their parents have the same names, John and Dawn. From the start they established a brother-like bond and connected on and off the field. Within this interview, we take the time to start at the beginning of Johnny's career before Highland when he had 0 offers and no place to continue his playing career. He then got an offer to play at Highland and ran with that opportunity. He discusses the importance of the JUCO Route (which we hit on in last week's episode with Jack & Cam as well) and how much it impacted his career to this day. After the JUCO experience and COVID-19 hit, Johnny's recruiting process slowed until his former hitting coach helped him get a spot with Division 1, Charleston Southern. While at Charleston Southern, Johnny had a .311 BA, 38 H's, 5 DB's, 3 TR's, 2 HR's, 22 R's, and 25 RBI's. To have a stat line like that at the D1 is special and rarely does it occur. He is now in the transfer portal, which he gives us an inside sneak peek at his recruiting process (without giving away too much). Ultimately, within this episode we get to see Johnny's colorful personality, the route of his baseball career, his favorite playing/non-playing memories, and his plans for the future. In this episode, Gannon and Bryce hear the story of Hunter Hoffman, Du-Pec Quarterback. He is not only the QB, but he is a very soft-spoken, humble, intelligent, and high Football-IQ guy. Within the episode, we dive into the beginning stages of Hunter's career and discuss how other sports, such as basketball shaped him into the leader he is today, both on and off the field. We learned about some key memories from Hunter's career as well, specifically the Lena-Winslow games his junior year and senior year. Hoffman posted a career stat line of 4,772 passing yards and 63 TD's which rank third all-time in the NUIC Conference. Not only does Hoffman's game on the field include a great deal of trickery, but so does his off the field poker nights with his friends. Ultimately, to top off his career in football at the high school level, Hoffman was named a 3A All-Stater while leading his team to their first ever Conference Championship. In this episode, Gannon and I talked about a variety of topics. We started with talking about how Cooper Rush led the Dallas Cowboys to a victory over the Minnesota Vikings this past Sunday. Bryce was in attendance at U.S Bank Stadium and had a lot of good things to say about the game. Although he would have loved to see Dak Prescott under center, seeing a backup like Cooper Rush come in and have the team rally behind him and win a ball game on the road was special. Bryce learned some things while being in Minnesota. The SKOL chant, the horn, and the atmosphere were insane. He tells you why you need to get to an NFL game ASAP. After all of that, we touched on the storylines of the week in the NFL. It's been a busy, strange, and sad week. In this episode, Gannon and I interviewed another #815Guy, Steve McShane. He is known for his electric football career, however also known to us as a guy who likes to fish, smile all the time, and support his family every single chance he gets. He began his playing career of football and baseball at Freeport High School in Freeport, Illinois and continued his a career in both sports at Western Illinois University. While at Western Illinois he had 2,375 yards in four years. He was a two-time second-team all MVFC running back and had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers and attended their Rookie Mini Camp. He has broken records, put on a show on the football and baseball field, and always put his family first. The best part about this interview is hearing that his pro dreams are not done... Ep. 55: The Story of James Cooper II

In this episode, Gannon returns to the mic and Bryce and him interview another #815Guy, James Cooper II. James is a former Harlem Huskie who succeeded and accomplished an insane amount while in high school. More specifically, when it came to football, James was lights out. He began his playing career as a center... Yeah, we could not believe it either. However, as he progressed and got older he took over at the quarterback position and never looked back. Always playing up age groups when he was a kid he entered into high school as a freshman splitting reps with the varsity starter. The rest is history. He took over at the position and capped off a career of 6,505 passing yards, 74 passing TD's, 16 rushing TD's which combine to be 90 total TD's. And, it did not come as a surprise to hear that those stats are all NIC10 records. His senior season he led the state in passing yards and passing TD's, averaged 300 yards a game, as well as 5 TD's. Ultimately, he finished his amazing career being a 3x all-state player, 2x all-conference, 1x conference MVP, Rock River Valley Male Athlete of the Year, and was also named a Chicago Bears Player of the Week. James is a quiet person, someone who has a small circle and with him everything is strictly business. Marey is a student-athlete at Lena-Winslow High School in Lena, Illinois. He has been an athlete since he was born and playing football, baseball, wrestling, and participating in track and field all while growing up. He has always been a shifty player that is very elusive with his jump-cuts and speed. Thus, allowing him to play the running back position for the Panthers. However, his junior season was cut short after game one due to a tough injury. He has now bounced back in time for his senior season and has led the Panthers to a 2-0 start on their season. Ep. 44: The Story of Gabe Howard

In this episode, Gannon and Bryce interview a special talent who will be graduating in the coming weeks. He is a stud athlete and his name is Gabe Howard. He has been an up-and-coming star over the past few years with the Du-Pec (Durand-Pecatonica) Co-Op football team. His physical attributes and mental football IQ are off the charts. There are three seniors this season that cracked the top ten in NUIC history (WR yards). Coming in at #8 is Gabe Howard, #9 is Brennan Carlson (Aquin), and #10 is Andrew Bowman (Aquin). These three seniors only had the opportunity to play six games this season, yet they all three made history. Their names are forever etched in the NUIC history books. A major shoutout goes to Kyle Kampmier who covers the whole football conference and gave us Gabe's career stats. Those career stats are: 71 receptions, 1,328 yards, 16 TD's (who tied Bryce Carlson #7 in NUIC history for TD's), while averaging 18.7 yards per catch. These stats speak volumes to the game that Gabe Howard has. Unfortunately, he will not be continuing his football career in college. He will be attending Drake University this coming fall. However, throughout this episode we get to take a look at his career, who he is as a person, and get major inspiration for incoming freshman and area athletes. In this episode, Gannon and Bryce interview a very intelligent, hard working, entrepreneur style of a person, Jason Hermann. Jason Hermann has had undeniable success with two different sports while growing up. He has made an impact with the Stockton Blackhawks in both wrestling and football. Wrestling is the sport he chose to continue at the college ranks while committing to Central College in Iowa. However, he has made an insane impact on the football team. Leaving behind a current statline (one game left) of 459 attempts, 2,327 yards, and 21 TD's (averaging 5.1 yards per carry over the course of his career). In this video, Gannon and Bryce interview Nate Boyer. After 9/11 struck, Nate realized he wanted the military. He then joined the Army and turned out to be a Green-Beret. He was a true fighter for our country and should always be looked at as one. That was only the beginning to his story though... He then decided to go back to college and tryout for the Texas Longhorn football team. He made the team and did everything in his power to find a starting role. That starting role, long snapper allowed him to be an undrafted free agent who signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL team. He got to play in the NFL with the "Legion of Boom". After he retired from the game of football, he had a sit down with Colin Kaepernick about his stance on the flag. Nate was the man who talked it out with Kaep and came to the conclusion that taking a knee would be more unified if it was done by his teammates instead of sitting on the bench. That conversation absolutely blew up. However, with this interview we wanted a more personal view of Nate. Nate has had quite the experience in life thus far, but his journey is only just beginning. Everything that Nate has learned will allow him to have a beautiful future. He even began a role as an actor in 2018 in the movie, Den of Thieves. Ep. 27: The Story of Barry Church

In this episode, Gannon and I interview Barry Church. Barry is an Ex-NFL Safety who played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He began gymnastics as a kid and his father gave him the idea of football. He then joined the football team at his high school, Penn Hills. The school is located in Pennsylvania. After starring in two sports in high school, football and track, Church took his talents to the University of Toledo. He felt as if he was undervalued heading into the NFL Draft and ultimately signed on as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2010. That is where Church took his career to an unbelievable next step. He was durable, motivated, and hungry to stick around on the Cowboys roster. He met the Dallas Cowboys special teams coach through his agent and tried to be a sponge to him and learn as much as he could. It's safe to say, Church did the right thing. He made a career out of football playing with the Cowboys from 2010-2016 and being a Team Captain on the defense. He ultimately was too pricey for the Cowboys to bring back so he packed his bags for Jacksonville and joined the Jaguars. He had a brief stint there and even after receiving some interest to return to the Cowboys, Church called it a career. He now has is own podcast, "The Players Lounge" with his best friend from the team, Danny McCray. Ultimately, Church entered retirement by falling in love with a new gig, media and now he works for the Dallas Cowboys in a new way. Hear his story here! In this video, Gannon and I open up with a new weekly part within our Monday drops. That part is tagged, "Mental Monday's". Each week from now on you will hear two quotes, one from Bryce and one from Gannon. They will reflect on those quotes and share how what they mean to them based on their life/mental health struggles. This will allow our listeners to understand it's okay to not be okay, all the time. We then described how to live, above the line. The phrase comes from a book called, "Above The Line" by Urban Meyer. Meyer's track record speaks for itself and in his book he does a deep dive on how to develop a championship mentality through his vision. His vision is thorough and has resulted in three National Championships in College Football. So, in this episode Bryce explains the book he read and how it impacted him enough to be willing to implement his mentalities into his coaching style down the road. Gannon was able to respond with his thoughts because he is at a Top 10 ranked NAIA school (Central Methodist University) where he plays baseball. The culture that has been established at his school correlated with this book. He is the quarterback of the Freeport Pretzels football team in Freeport, Illinois. His head coach is a former special guest of ours, Anthony Dedmond. Within this interview we get inside access into the 1 v 1 relationship between head coach and quarterback. We also take a look into what shaped Zay into the quarterback he is today, role models growing up, what his plans are for the future, what it takes to be a great player and person, and some fun facts of who he is individually. In this episode, Gannon interviews Bryce, Jack, and Cam. All three of them graduated from Highland Community College in Freeport, Illinois while playing baseball at the JUCO level. Highland is a D2 JUCO baseball program that many people are recruited to play at. However, throughout this episode Gannon asks the three of them questions about their JUCO experience. They were asked to describe the difference between the "JUCO Route" and what a "JUCO Bandit" is. Then, they dove into their favorite memories on and off the field at the JUCO level. After discussing those memories, they gave an in-depth look at what JUCO offers compared to NAIA, D3, D2, and D1. JUCO is an experience that not everyone will have, but those that do will never forget that special route that they took. Ultimately, the best advice that was given throughout the entirety of this episode was that if you want to play the sport in college, do everything in your power to ensure you continue playing that sport. Live in the moment, instead of worrying about your possible future regrets. Sports do not last forever, and Bryce, Jack, and Cam will explain that thoroughly. William Gustafson and Hayden Neuendorf are teammates at Aquin High School (1A) located in Freeport, Illinois. Aquin is a small-school with around 88 people for enrollment and is also the same high school Bryce Carlson attended. Will Gustafson is the starting QB for the Bulldogs and has a storied career throughout his three years as starting QB. He has put up mind boggling stats, been on varsity for four years, been named to all-conference, and was even selected as the MVP of the conference. With two games left to go in his career, he is six touchdowns shy of being the all-time TD leader in the history of the NUIC conference, yes that's crazy. On the other hand, his teammate Hayden Neuendorf is an absolute mean-machine on a football field. He is starting OL/DL and has been getting action in varsity games for four years now as well. He has also committed to continue his playing career of football at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Both of these men are amazing athletes, but even better people who lead on and off the field with their words and more importantly their actions. Ep. 38: The Story of Phillip Tanner

In this episode, Gannon and Bryce interview Phillip Tanner aka PT. PT is a former college football player who played at Middle Tennessee State and wound up being an undrafted free agent who signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Throughout his stint in the NFL, PT played for the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and the Buffalo Bills. Despite playing for those four teams, PT stated that the best fan base to play in front of was the Buffalo Bills aka Bills Mafia. After his NFL career, PT was offered a job on the Dallas Cowboys staff and chomped at the bit. He classifies himself as a "Garrett Guy". Jason Garrett is formerly known as the old Dallas Cowboys coach. PT learned his culture ways from Garrett and has taken them into the realm of coaching for himself. After departing the Dallas Cowboys staff, PT joined forces with former teammate, Jon Kitna where they both now coach at a school in Texas called Burleson High School. Throughout the interview, we got to know PT as a "lunch pail guy". A lunch pail guy is someone who is going to outwork everyone and pay great attention to detail. We got to know PT as that guy. The guy who battled his way up, fought for everything he achieved, and never stopped being hungry. Ultimately, PT explains some insanely amazing examples that will resonate with former, current, and future athletes. He is the prime example of a quote on quote "man on a mission". When asked where PT sees himself in five to seven years his answer spoke volumes to his character. He wants to establish a culture at Burleson High School, just how he learned to do from Jason Garrett. This is a great interview that will allow you to learn from an athlete, a coach, and a man who has learned from some of the greats like Jason Witten and Sean Lee. Just like Jason Witten use to say, "the secret is in the dirt". In this episode, Gannon and I take a look at how incoming coaches should interact with their new school. First we dive into the idea that every player should be treated as i'ndividuals'. Every new coach should take the time to get to know their players while developing the formation of trust. Over time, trust leads to a bond/connection between player and coach. That bond then allows every single player to buy into a teammate mentality. That teammate mentality is all about becoming 'teammates'. Once the relationship has been formed between coach-individual player, then it makes it easier to rally the team 'together'. Being apart of a team is not always easy. There can be bumps in the road, but at the end of the day if you stick together you make it to the last step. The last step in demonstrating how incoming coaches should begin at their new school is ending as a 'family'. Ending as a family means that you did all the right things while forming your team. You started off by interacting with a bunch of individuals. You earned their trust, you developed a connection, and you learned their strengths and weaknesses. After that you allowed the team to form together based on that trust. Once a team becomes family and ends that way, it will last forever. Those are the types of coaches that players never forget. In this episode, we interview Logan Hullette, a current student-athlete at Keiser University. He's been known for his craft on the baseball field; having 8 years of experience training the youth, 6 years of collegiate baseball experience at multiple schools, injury adversity being overcome, and many awards along the way. However, he should also be known for his positive thinking and outlook on life. In 2020, Logan won the Walters State Bubba Hubbard Teammate of the Year Award, and that award speaks to his character on & off the field. He not only puts up crazy stats and overcomes scary injuries, but he rallies people together and brings the best out of them. He makes it known he would not have a story without his support system. His family, friends, and girlfriend have made his struggles become a strength in a never ending battle to achieve greatness.
