EP97: The Man Who survived a Rhino Attack ↣ 'Klein Piet' Goosen

They say a cat has nine lives, but we think Piet Goosen must have 90. He's been head-butted by a rhino, he's been knee-capitated by a giraffe, he's even survived wrestling a 15ft python while driving down a highway! Every single one of these mind blowing moments has conservation at it's core, because Piet plays a huge part in animal rescue and rehabilitation. Snakes, tortoises, birds, antelope... Piet has has helped them all. He even works against poachers too. Through his many years spent in the bush, he has grown to understand that nature is interconnected in the most complex of ways. Hang on to your headphones folks - this one's a bumpy ride!

EP96: Pursuing The Perfect Fly ↣ Raymond Mutemeri: From Zimbabwe to S.Africa

Like many things in the wild, it’s small details that make the difference. Trained by the late Gordon Macpherson as part of an elite fly tying team in Zimbabwe, Ray Mutemeri has known this fact to be true for almost 40 years. It was this same attention to detail that brought him up through the ranks, and eventually gave him the opportunity to move to South Africa. He is now the lead tyer at the Johburg office of South africa’s biggest fly fishing shop and outfitter -Mavungana Fly Fishing. Perhaps the wildest part of this story: it was almost twenty years and hundreds of thousands of flies later that Ray could first experience the effectivenes of his own craftmanship in the water.

Back in Episode 11 Ejler shared some memories of farm life on the rural island of Bonholm, Denmark. One story that really struck a chord was the existence of a food called Head-cheese, a magical substance created from the boiled remains of whatever comes out of the head of a pig. Never one to turn down a challenge, Robin provided the head of a wild boar the very next chance he had to harvest one. In this Episode Robin and Ejler reminisce about the sequence of events that brought them to the mysterious flavors of Danish Wild-Boar head cheese. While eating this magical dish they also catch up over their recent adventures in South Africa and Northern California.

It’s a magical time that testosterone in the fallow population bubbles over and the thickets of the Eastern Cape descend into mating season mayhem. This episode we follow Robin from @thewilddispatch @williamdonian from Wellington Farms and Callum Methley from @kudu_hunt as he experiences the fallow rut for the very first time.

Wherever you're from, when it comes to sourcing protein, there’s an easy way, and there’s hard way… Then there’s Jandre’s way.

An anomaly in the South African hunting community, Jandre hikes many kilometers deep into the mountains to areas with no roads, and no backup. Although he’s harvested many African animals with his bow that would make a talented rifle-hunter blush, it’s the non-native fallow deer that gets Jandre properly fired up.

Robin managed to sit down with Jandre just a few days before the beginning of the fallow deer rut.

Chefs and natural grocery stores appreciate their attention to details, knowing it’s the little things that make a great looking and better tasting mushroom.

In this episode, Robin, Fred Hammer, and Robin Gratz spend three action-packed days trying to land an African monster. This is no small feat. Historically South Africa has always been packed with high caliber apex predators: Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, hyenas, packs of African wild dogs etc. As a result antelope have developed an incredible skill-set that helps to keep them alive. So, getting close with a bow in hand is sometimes laughably difficult. Nevertheless they manage to close the distance, and let arrows fly.

Cole Wilks has been putting wild meat on the table (and in the freezer) since he was a kid. Spending months of each year hunting with a bow, it's unsurprising that he's an absolute pro at wilderness survival.

Cole has featured as a coach on Hunt Warz, made the final 22 in Season 7 of Alone, and emerged triumphant from a 21-day challenge in the latest season of Discovery channel's Naked and Afraid. On top of that he runs workshops, online classes, hosts a new podcast and has a successful channel on YouTube. Suffice to say if there's a wilderness flavored pie, Cole's got his finger in it.

This episode is recorded live, as the action unfolds, on one of many vast ranches in the mountains of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is completely unscripted and unplanned.

Much like many parts of the USA— farmers in South Africa use trained hounds to help control local predator populations. They do this to reduce predation on their far roaming-livestock and new-born animals. Despite this training, hound success rates tend to be low, but help keep the cats and jackals a safer distance. We learned this from two local hound hunters named Themba and Gogo, who we interviewed spontaneously on the side of a mountain. This is their story.

EP64: Living With Lions, Elephants and Guerilla Fighters ↣ Lyn and Mike Methley in Namibia

Today We are traveling across the world and back in time to Namibia in the South West of Africa... 300 miles from the nearest grocery store, Lyn and Mike Methley raised their family while helping to build the first road through the area in the 1960’s. They lived side by side with the lions, impala, crocodiles and the enormous, but sadly extinct, desert elephants. Living close to the Northern border with Angola, they also had more than a few encounters with guerrilla fighters during a particularly turbulent time. This one’s got a bunch of bonkers stories folks so buckle up and never let off the accelerator.

Riaan has since become the holder of numerous world records: first to ride 42000km around Africa, first to lap the islands of Madagascar and Iceland in his kayak, and first to row from Morocco to New York in a 18ft row boat. All this to say having survived through landmines, multiple kidnappings, wild ocean storms, starvation and extreme dehydration — Riaan has a story or two to share with us today.

Having spent 30 years homesteading at Twin Lakes, Alaska, building an incredible cabin (and entire lifestyle) with nothing but hand tools –Dick Proenneke fast became a legend of the Alaskan Wilderness. Author Monroe Robinson and his wife K spent 19 summers caring for Dick Proenneke's cabin after he left in 1999. A master craftsman in his own right, Monroe spent that time restoring and replicating the amazing tools and objects Dick created.

Through Dick's extensive journals, the nuanced way he created and repaired objects, and Monroe's own memories of their friendship –We are able to paint a picture of the truly wild way this man lived.
