In the year 1991, a solo indie developer called Éric Chahi released what could be one of the most iconic one-man games ever to be released for the Amiga & Atari ST. The game tells the story of a young scientist by the name of Lester who is transported to "Another World" when an experiment goes wrong. The adventure is filled with dangerous creatures that will transport your mind Out of This World!

One of the amazing things about this game is that not only did Chahi develop the game alone but he also created his own GAME ENGINE to run the adventure. He crafted his own visual art style from vectors to help reduce memory and even used rotoscoping to plan out Lester's and other characters' animations.

The game is a fascinating blend of slow build atmospherics and incredible cinematics for such an old game. Its use of little to no dialogue to tell the story of Lester and his encounters with Buddy (his alien escape comrade) as they battle their way across the alien world earned a huge amount of respect from many game developers. From playing this game all the way through (which you can see here on the Grief Burrito Gamer Channel) I completely understand how this game influenced games such as Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Ico. To have such a consistent and believable universe crafted out of such simple visuals and sound design is something that I cant hold in high enough regard!

This week Hazz & Jordan are joined by the total RuneBoi 9Rain! He's a world renowned streamer and youtuber known mainly for his Runescape YouTube channel however he's also a host of the podcast Bankstandin' which he hosts with J1mmy.

Hazz being a total Runescape N00B is taken on a journey by Jordan & 9Rain through the nitty gritty of the game, it's community run polling system, it's weirdly strong and stable ecomony and why people in Venezuela are using it as essentially a currency converter...

For any listeners who don't know Runescape it's an MMO which started in 2001 and is still going today in (to an outsider) a very similar style. The graphics still haven't really changed that much! It seems like such a strange concept that a game of that graphical fidelity would still be so popular today in the age of ray tracing and 4k textures!

The bois also get into what it's like to be a content creator and meeting people who you've looked up to for a while. 9Rain even found himself sat next to a man who walked on the moon once!

Star wars open world?! 

Hell. YES.

On today's Brief Burrito Hazz is joined by Nick (@Ruthlessly Ruffles) from Instagram to discuss the latest game news that just dropped!

Top news which dropped only minutes ago as of recording this:

• LucasFilm has decided to launch LucasGames
• They then announced an Indiana Jones game with a teaser trailer!
• Now they announce an open world star wars game!

First of all we are all hype about the Indiana Jones game however both agree that we would prefer it to be a third person game for the adventure style play. First person could be used for clues and examining things however!

With lucasFilm now starting making star wars games this actually ends the exclusivity EA held over star wars games however they did announce that the follow up to Jedi Fallen Order is still happening. So fans of this game don't sweat it.

EA has issued a statement on its future regarding Star Wars games. "We are proud of our long-standing collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, which will continue for years to come. Our talented teams have created some of the most successful games in the history of the Star Wars franchise, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefront II, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and Star Wars: Squadrons. We love Star Wars, and we look forward to creating more exciting experiences for players to enjoy."

Little else is known about Ubisoft's new Star Wars game, except that it'll be directed by Ubisoft's Julian Geraghty, most known for directing the crew and division 2 but also produced splinter cell Pandora tomorrow and chaos theory. This new game will be made using the Snowdrop game engine which their other games were made in and I did notice along side this star wars game TBA there is also a James Cameron Avatar game in the works from them!

Some of the things Nick and I were hoping for are big inspirations from Star Wars 1313 or something like Bountry Hunter blended with Cyberpunk 2077. Imagine flying to a world like The Mandalorian to track down bounties in a free and open world. Imagine GTA but you see the crimes happen and hunt the criminals yourself!

We're still to hear how Disney factor into the rights for the games but we will keep you up to date

On today's episode of Grief Burrito Hazz is joined by Ryan from Kidnapped by Wizards to discuss their thoughts on the entire first season of Halo; the new original series on Paramount+ (using Amazon Prime for us UK viewers).

The Halo Series story takes place in what’s called the Silver Timeline, it stands in its own canon from the games and is an alternative telling. Following Master Chief (played by Pablo Schreiber), Kwan Ha (Yerin Ha), Miranda Keyes (Olive Gray), Danny Sapani as Captain Keyes, fan favourites Kate Kennedy as Kai -125 and the voice of Jen Taylor back as Cortana. The man in the big green Mjolnir Armor must do all he can to protect one and seek out another Forerunner Artifact before The Covenant led by brainwashed human Makee (played by Charlie Murphy) can find it. 

Not before Dr. Catherine Halsey, played incredibly by Natasha McElhone and Margaret Parangosky will do all they can to twist John-117 to their will.

In Part One we discuss our overall thoughts on the introduction to the series universe and the characters that live in it, in Part Two we discuss out series highlights and finally in Part Three we discuss what we see coming next and how we felt about the finale!

The Russian Sleep Experiment is a creepypasta which tells the tale of five test subjects being exposed to an experimental sleep-inhibiting stimulant in a Soviet-era scientific experiment, which has become the basis of the urban legend.

The story centers around five political prisoners who, on a promise of freedom once the experiment is complete, go through a horrifying experience. The initial sleep experiment begins normally as the test subjects are kept awake using a gas to keep them awake... but as the test continues the test chamber is filled with screams. Then all of a sudden... falls silent. When the scientists open the chamber they're met with something so gruesome that I dare not even type it. Ben Drowned... 

The legend goes that a student by the name of Jadusable while searching through local garage sales for retro video games he finds what seems to be an old copy of The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 64. He's gifted the copy for free by the old creepy man holding the garage sale and as he begins is playthrough of the game he begins to notice something strange.

On the game's title screen still sits and old file named "Ben" and when the games characters begin calling him by that name even on his own game file Jadusable starts to suspect something a little more sinister is going on. His gaming experience starts to take a dark turn as he's stalked by a Link statue, his character bursts into flames and the whole game begins to fall apart around him.

This week the Burrito Bois are breaking down the 2K game BioShock, set miles below the Atlantic Ocean in the city of Rapture. A city led by Andrew Ryan to allow the artist to create, the scientist to modify and everyone to live their dream life. Unfortunately with the advancement of genetic modification people begin to turn into Splicers as their DNA is changed and they become addicted to a substance known as Adam. When Jack arrives in Rapture under strangely suspicious circumstances he must make his way through the city, guided by the mysterious Atlas, to navigate an underwater civil war between Rapture's founder Andrew Ryan and the notorious smuggler Frank Fontaine.

On episode 86 Hazz & Jordan are reviewing their game of the month and deciding if it's worth you hard earned money! And trying not to swear...

The new format for reviewing games is as follows:

Gameplay, Hows The Tortilla - The games wrapping; The world, the tone, the art and the sound.

Mechanics, What's The Filling - What do you do in the game? And can you do it well?!

Worth it? HOW HOT IS THAT SAUCE - Did the game leave a tingle on our tongue, a sweat on our cheeks (face cheeks you pervert) or a fire in our belly!

We then rate the game out of our 1 - 5 on our scale (Mild, Tepido, Hot, One Spicy Boi! and OH GOD SEND THE LORD! We then combine the rating to give the game a score out of 10!

This month the chosen game is "Pumpkin Jack" the solo developer action platformer that channels all the spooky strangeness of Medieval and the snarky comedy of Banjo Kazooie! Sounds right up Hazz & Jordans spooky street.

Dead Space 1, The Xbox 360 game felt more like a ghost train, more quiet areas, focusing more on creeping round corners to suddenly be pounced on by Necromorphs. The first game felt like it had shooting and dismemberment as a survival tool as well as a storytelling mechanic.

Dead Space 2 in comparison though, is more interested in panic. It’s more full on and it drives the player to panic through areas of combat and fear by throwing waves of Necromorphs in their path.

Returning to The Ishimura... must be one of the most horrific experiences we've had in games...

Isaac Clarke awakens aboard The Sprawl; A floating space colony built into the remains of the moon of Titan circling Saturn only to find himself in the midst of a second Necromorph rampage. The entirety of Titan Station is a blood soaked massacre of limbs!

On episode 101 of Grief Burrito Hazz, Jordan, Lulu & Nick are review the 1995 video game to movie adaption of Mortal Kombat in preparation for the new movie coming out this year! This movie is renowned for being one of the movies that started the "video game movies are bad" trend... however one of our opinions may surprise you. This movie is actually directed by Paul W S Anderson who went on to make Event Horizon right after this which was a pretty interesting movie. That being said he did go on to write all of the Resident Evil movies and has recently written the Monster Hunter adaption too.
