How do we make peace with the things that happened to us? And is it possible to someday find love, compassion, and empathy for the very people who caused us so much pain?

This week's episode of Fancy Coffee Time is a little different, and truthfully, it's a conversation I didn't even realize I needed to have.

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been following Collin Gosselin's story and the release of his book, In the Shadows of Eight. His experiences have hit incredibly close to home for me, bringing up emotions and memories from my own childhood and the things I survived in foster care. And somewhere along the way, I found myself getting so emotionally invested in his story that I didn't realize what it was doing to my own mental health.

Something I've learned in therapy is that what you consume will consume you, and holy shit, was that a lesson I needed to revisit.

For a little while, I genuinely felt like I'd taken ten steps backward in my healing. Maybe I've just reached a point in my life where I'm finally ready to unpack some of the things I've been carrying around for decades.

I have a lot of anger that I'm still learning how to let go of. And as crazy as it might sound, I hope that someday, when I've worked through all of it, I can find compassion and empathy for the people who hurt me. Not because they deserve my forgiveness or because what happened was okay, but because I deserve the peace that comes with no longer carrying that pain.

I don't have this whole healing thing figured out. Not even close. But I'm learning that healing isn't always about how far we've come. Sometimes it's about finally having the courage to face what we've spent our entire lives trying to survive.

So grab your fancy coffee and come hang out with me.
