But there’s a much bigger question: What are the rules for using them?

Right now, ICE has a general use-of-force policy, but no specific publicly identified rules governing when these gloves can be activated, how long someone can be shocked, or what happens when their use crosses the line.

The manufacturer itself warns against using the gloves for verbal defiance or punishment and advises against prolonged shocks. And a lawsuit in Kentucky raises even more serious questions after a 43-year-old man allegedly was shocked 27 times with the gloves, along with 13 Taser deployments. The glove shocks have not been established as the cause of his death.

If ICE wants another use-of-force weapon, the public should know the rules before the gloves go on.

What training will officers receive?
When is shocking someone justified?
How will activations be audited?
And what happens when the electronic record doesn’t match an officer’s use-of-force report?

This isn’t about whether ICE officers should be able to protect themselves. It’s about how much power government agents should have to inflict serious bodily harm without clear, transparent limits.

Tennessee lawmakers moved to allow mid-decade redistricting as Republicans faced concerns about losing political power. When the new map was challenged, the state openly argued that its motivation was political, not racial.

That distinction exposed a disturbing legal loophole: when race and political affiliation overlap, lawmakers can claim they are targeting Democrats rather than Black voters.

The lawsuit is not over, and the court’s ruling was only preliminary. But the larger problem is already clear. Gerrymandering allows politicians to choose their voters, weakens competitive elections, rewards ideological extremes, and makes elected officials less accountable to the public.

Provisions from Trump’s SAVE America Act are being attached to major legislation involving national defense, government funding, and a congressional stock-trading ban. That puts lawmakers in a political trap: oppose the election provisions, and they can be accused of opposing the military, shutting down the government, or protecting corrupt insiders.

This is not transparent lawmaking. It is political extortion designed to blur accountability and prevent voters from knowing exactly what their representatives supported.

If these election restrictions are strong enough to become law, they should be strong enough to survive a public debate and a clean vote.
