I review the book, PheMOMenal by Annick Raunch. With relatable stories, powerful teachings, and helpful how-to tips, she has created this practical guide to following your passion and achieving your goals. As a mother and educator, you can absolutely strive to the greatest heights, no matter your reality. This book was a great read and I wish I would have read it much sooner. There was a lot of reflection in it that helped me deal with a lot of the struggles I have been facing in 2024.

Interview for writer, J.M. DeMatteis

In episode 132, I am joined by award winning and long time writer, JM DeMatteis. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, J. M. DeMatteis was a professional musician and rock music journalist before entering the comic book field. DeMatteis has written almost all of the major DC and Marvel icons—including memorable runs on Spider-Man (his classic "Kraven’s Last Hunt". Also co-writing Justice League (winning DeMatteis and his collaborators, Keith Giffen and Kevin Maguire, comics’ highest honor, the Eisner Award); but his greatest acclaim has come for sophisticated original graphic novels like Seekers Into The Mystery, Blood: A Tale, The Last One, and Mercy.

In our interview, JM talks about his work in the business, his various projects and current projects such as his Kickstarter, The DeMultiverse consists of four all-new, all-different comic books he has written. Each of the four initial DeMultiverse titles is completely different in tone and style, and each one is co-created by a different artist and his upcoming Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt this November. Along with being a comic book fan and creator, he is also the co-owner and manager of the historic comic book shop Hi De Ho Comics in Santa Monica, California. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kristen, where they plan together for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Liz has an Associates of Science from Kishwaukee College and a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Blackburn College, I also have my middle school endorsement. She also has an ESL endorsement from Rockford University and then worked as a substitute teacher for my first year in education. She taught 4 years of Kindergarten at Christian Life Schools where we first met and has been teaching 4 years at Cortland Elementary (DeKalb District #428), 2 years in 4th grade, 2 years in 5th grade. Liz has now been married for about a year and a half to her wonderful husband Rick. She is also a very proud Auntie to 2 wonderful little boys. Liz also have a small crafting business, and have recently done some tutoring. She love traveling and spending time outdoors. I am an avid walker hasn't missed a day since October 1, 2020!

The Crawlspace is one of the first Spider-Man fan sites to ever hit the internet and has interviewed such “Spider-Celebrities” including Stan Lee, Paul Soles (Voice Actor from the 67 Spider-Man Cartoon) to Yuri Lownthal (Voice Actor from the Spider-Man PlayStation game). He teaches TV Production and Broadcasting at Joplin High School. He has been at the job nearly five years. Before teaching he spent 17 years as a reporter and anchor for his local NBC news station.

It’s the same movie that launched “White Christmas.” The film’s concept: a country inn that opens only on holidays, each with its own Irving Berlin song. Among them was “Happy Holiday.” Bing sang it as a general greeting — wishing joy for all the holidays throughoutthe year. Irving Berlin’s songwriting was timeless: simple, warm, and instantly memorable. “Happy Holiday” fits thatperfectly. The lyrics are welcoming, and the message is essentially: enjoy every celebration ahead.

Tribute to Clark Neher

In episode 192, I do a tribute episode to my friend and mentor, Clark Neher. Clark was active in the DeKalb and NIU communities. He was a hospice volunteer for 20 years; a kindness repaid in his own final days through care and companionship from wonderful hospice staff and volunteers. As a Kiwanian he enjoyed working with DeKalb High School Key Club members. He served as president of the DeKalb Public Library Board of Trustees, a term which included a major expansion and renovation of the library. He was a long time professor and community theatre member. You can read his Obituary here.

I review the book, Dragon Smart by the mother/son team of Tommy and Tisha Richmond. The book follows the story of Tommy the Dragon. He is gifted, smart, knows his facts, but when it comes to tests, Tommy isn't the best. The book is amazing look into something we have all experienced. We know our facts, we do our studying, we love learning, but when it comes to tests, we panic or can't do our best. Yet, we are smart in our own ways, we are talented and we will find a way to explore and understand. We are all Dragon Smart.

In episode 83, I look back at Batman: The Long Halloween on its 25th Anniversary. The story is set in the Year One continuity, suggested focusing on Harvey Dent's years prior to becoming Two-Face, as that had not been depicted in depth since the original Year One story. This story lasts 13 issues as Batman tries to solve the mysterious of a new killer known as, Holiday, who is killing members and associates of the last crime family of Gotham City, the Falcones. The story is one of my favorite Batman stories and can be used in education from literature to modern history.

2024 Wrap Up

In the 191th episode, I look back at the troubling year that I personally experienced. From lost of unemployment to financial issues. This was a year that has been very difficult, still not comparable to 2008 for me. But despite all the struggles and experiences of loss. There is still hope ahead and knowing that even given in years of despair, you can still see all the days in-between and know there is still a lot of good too. Something even 2025 will show.

Tribute to Beth Foose

My friend, Mary “Beth” Foose, passed away this past weekend after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. She was the first in-studio teacher guest on The Pixel Classroom Podcast, appearing in Episode 86, which was recorded exactly four years ago today on November 18, 2021.

Beth faced her diagnosis with incredible grace and strength. Her “Foose Fighters” stood with her every step of the way, lifting her spirits throughout the journey.

A 2001 Sycamore High School graduate, Beth dedicated 13 years to District 427, teaching at Southeast Elementary, Sycamore Middle School, and South Prairie Elementary. Her impact on students and colleagues will be deeply missed.

This episode revisits moments from our original conversation, celebrating her passion, humor, and the heart she brought to education. I will miss you Beth, fly free.

Jeffrey Westhoff has served as a film critic, feature writer, reporter, and copy editor in his career as a journalist. He wrote his first novel, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, while working as a freelance writer. He has finished his second novel, a spy thriller aimed at a younger audience, which he hopes to sell this year. He is working on his third novel, a sequel to his second book.

Jeffrey grew up in Erie, Pa. As a teenager, he spent his Saturday mornings at the library and his Saturday nights at the movies. That love of reading and film prepared his future as a movie critic. Seeing Star Wars on its opening day in 1977 made him a movie lover, but it was a viewing of The Spy Who Loved Me that sealed Jeffrey’s fate as a James Bond fan. His first published movie review appeared in the Erie Times-News while he was senior in high school.

Jeffrey attended college at Marquette University in Milwaukee. He has worked in newspapers in Indiana and the Chicago suburbs. He took up ballroom dancing two years ago and last summer took first place in a national competition. He now lives with a grouchy cat in Chicago’s northwest suburbs and works for a nonprofit.

On episode 103, I am joined by Theresa Hoover, who is a music educator, speaker, and writer. She is an advocate for student voice in the music room and helps teachers empower students throughout their musical experiences by transforming their classrooms into student-centered learning environments.

Theresa has taught instrumental, general, and vocal music in a variety of settings, most recently teaching middle school band in Northern Virginia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Penn State University and a master’s degree in wind conducting from West Chester University, both in Pennsylvania. In the fall, Theresa will be starting work toward a Ph.D. in Music Learning and Teaching.

Theresa was the founding director of the Chester County Youth Wind Ensemble and has been the guest conductor for several elementary and middle school ensembles in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Theresa is a recognized presenter and clinician at local, regional, and national level conferences. She is a Google for Education Certified Trainer, Google Certified Innovator, and Noteflight Learn Ambassador, frequently working with teachers to help integrate technology into their music classes. Theresa also teaches summer graduate electives for the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Theresa is the co-author of Pass the Baton: Empowering All Music Students, published by Dave Burgess Consulting, Inc. Her writing has been featured on several online publications as well as on her own blog, Off the Beaten Path: A Music Teacher’s Journey.

When not teaching, you can find Theresa curled up with a good book, on the running trail, traveling to visit family and friends, or spending time with her dog, Dizzy.

When Helena graduated in 2018 with her M.Ed in Elementary Education from Eastern Oregon University at the age of 20. Helena moved to Pecos, New Mexico to teach Kindergarten for 3 years. During this time she became overwhelmed and reached teacher burnout and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety during her first year of teaching. From there Helena learned everything about time management and found a way to complete her teacher workload so that she could leave at contract time during my 2nd year of teaching. During this time, Helena decided to start The Present Teacher, a community where new and first year teachers could learn how to manage their workload in the classroom so they can enjoy their life outside of teaching. During this time Helena also created the Thriving Teacher Framework. A framework that helps new and first year teachers management their workload and have a thriving career. The "Thinking Classroom" model has been coined by mathematician Dr. Peter Liljedahl and his work of creating math learning spaces that encourage students to think more with their math tasks. In this episode (161), I talk about the inspiration I got from the Chey and Pav podcast and how I am building it into my curriculum. In this first episode I give a quick breakdown of the Thinking Classroom Model. What materials I will be using for student work and recording. How I am using the Eduprotocols model with it, especially with Hexagonal Thinking.
