Rainman and I pick up where we left off last week with a discussion after a stated meeting in the lodge library. He tells me that no one wants to serve as an officer of the lodge if the current master gets nominated again.

We need five good MMs to make this happen.

We begin to meet at Gibson’s house to discuss the possibility of lifting the lodge back to good health.

You must consider the many distinct aspects of lodge life and how you will address each one of them.

You also have to consider family life, work promotions, work schedules changing, and economic situations.

Everyone must commit and dedicate the necessary time, effort, and resources.

Is five a magic number?

If we do this, we can’t just abandon it.

Our secretary quits in the third month of 2017.

We confer a third degree and have a special 8-course festive board. It was way too much for one evening.

The bar was set high from the beginning. Where value is clear, decisions are easy.

We have a meaningful degree for the first time in over three years.

It’s in the budget is masonic lore and myth! You have to vote on a budget and then vote on how it will be spent.

Transparency was crucial – we did not join Freemasonry to make money or hide money.

We went to Grand Master and the Retreats if needed.

Be prepared because things will happen, and you must adjust.

Grand Lodge Communications was not what it seemed like.

Our Inspector was crucial to our success.

My Brothers all,

I, like many of you, have heard rumors floating around for the past several weeks. Last night I received alleged charges against me that “Grand Master, G. Clay Smith, received and accepted.” These charges relate to my conduct as Grand Master. To be completely honest, I have anticipated these charges from the moment I stood in defiance of a small group of Past Masters and in defense of Rumsey and our Masonic Law.

On July 5th, the Grand Master sent all Texas Masons a letter proclaiming that “it is time for all dissensions throughout the Masons in Texas to come to an immediate end.” That statement was signed by the Grand Master and all the Grand Trustees. It is now clear that the Grand Master’s statement was nothing more than mere words on a piece of paper.

There seems to be a small group of Past Grand Masters who are upset with the excitement the 2022 team brought to Freemasonry. They want to go back to what they know and control. That small group responded with secret charges against R.W Rumsey. And it appears these charges are stemming from the same source.

I will defend myself against the charges. But it seems pretty clear that I am being railroaded just like R.W. Rumsey. Luckily, Masonry taught me to have a deep and abiding faith in Divine Providence and I know it is all for our good. (somehow).

My thoughts on this:  

    1-This has probably been happening for far longer than what this is letting on to, it’s just that this Grand Master is choosing to stand up to them and fight back.

        2-This is happening far more than you might expect. Trust me, I’ve heard similar stories coming from other states.

         3-Many Grand Lodges are talking the talk but are quietly conducting business as usual. What does that mean? Simple! Get more membership by any means possible. If you want to get a better idea, just read Past Grand Master Dwight L. Smith’s two articles called “Wither Are Traveling and Why This Confusion in the Temple. These articles were written in 1965 and still hold true to this day.

       4-Why do I even bring this up you might ask? Because my brethren and I are experiencing something similar to this as we speak. Not the same circumstances but the same idea.

      Which brings me to the reason for this podcast episode. I will be publishing some episodes that I recently recorded with one of the brothers from my lodge and we will be talking about some of the history of our lodge, both good and bad, and where we are now. Please listen and share and don’t be afraid to speak your truth.

We introduce Rain Man to you and hear him talk about what the lodge was like back in 2001, who was there, what type of events we had, and some of the members who led our lodge.

Leaders of the Symbolic Blue Lodge were also the leaders of the shrine, Scottish rite, Eastern Star, and anything else that happened at the lodge.

Brother Arthur Riccelli told me that if I got elected to receive the degrees of masonry at Palm Springs Lodge No.693, he would not only attend all my degrees, but he would give an MM ring at my raising. He did exactly what he said he would do.

         Horrible catered meals.

       Wearing white pants and polo shirts during the summer months.

        The curmudgeon that sat in the north.

       My botched application process.

       The US Army donated our building to us after WW2.

        45 to 50 degrees per year

         There are no secrets.

         The precision of the past masters at past master’s night in October.

         Jeff Gibson leaves the valley due to the 2008 recession to hide out and work a bunch of different jobs.

        White Rivers Lodge in Arizona.

        Pay your dues, Brother!

        Jeffs comes back 10 years later, and I attend a chaotic 2015 stated meeting.

        A Brother gets up and demands that the Master resign immediately.

         A degree so horrible that the Grand Lodge put us on degree probation that ended up lasting over two years.

        Masonic controversy.

        The Grand Master does not arrest our charter but puts us on probation.

        Everyone wears many hats.

        The officers refuse to serve another year under the current Master.

         The lodge keeps deteriorating.

      Two Past masters were given 60 days to recite 2 long-form lectures equaling over 50 minutes in order to qualify for their stations thus setting the standard for all future Masters of the lodge.

In this episode we have a conversation with another one of our prospects that just received an application at our lodge and pick his brain as to what his experience has been so far at our lodge. We then shift gears and introduce the Trivium as practiced at Palm Springs Lodge No.693

Brother Matt Jackson gives us an awesome introduction to the Trivium and what it is, how it started, what the motive behind it was and still is and some of the symbolism created by the set up of the seating arrangement. The video is called Modern Lesson from Early Bodybuilders and it’s only 6 minutes and 13 seconds long but in it, he reveals the secret to great results.

#1 -He says, “It’s the effort and consistency that one puts into the training that makes the difference and that my friends are free.”

#2 – worrying about genetics, testosterone levels, or the natty limit is simply pointless.

#3 – There's more to bodybuilding than just putting on muscle. Bodybuilding should really be making us more capable and versatile humans.

Notice that I used the number three because that was what the creator of the video used. It is important to understand that by eliminating all the confusion and hype of the latest fads, you get clear on what really works and what does not.

Again, work hard in the gym, be consistent, and eat healthily and that means different things to different people. It doesn’t mean vegan; it doesn’t mean vegetarian either. The key is to work hard to get results. There is no easy way. All the men and women you see who are physically fit have put in many hours, days, weeks, and years to get their bodies strong and durable. They do it the hard way.

In the masonic world, we also need to keep things simple but effective if our lodges are to become beacons of light. I will refer to the article “Why This Confusion in the Temple” by Dwight L. Smith published in 1965.

He says in chapter 12 called “The Hard Way is the Masonic Way”, “But there is no quick way and no easy way to erect temples within the hearts of men”, “There is no effortless way for Freemasons to do the work of Freemasonry.” And then later he says, “the work of a Mason must be done the hard way, or it avails nothing.”

To Guard the West Gate at every stage of the masonic journey, to hold ourselves to a high standard, to do the work of a mason within the lodge walls that is so palpable that you and your lodge become a magnet to the men who attend its assemblies and when they do show up, they wish not to leave.

Could this be one of the mysteries of Freemasonry?

Could this be done by everyone?

Maybe, but it will be difficult and just like weightlifting to exercising, the only way you will get results is through:

       Great and consistent effort

       Focus

       And a clear understanding that The Hard Way is the Freemasonic Way.

We do repeat ourselves again on a few topics because some of what we had to present just overlaps.

Our Executive Committee meetings were every 4 to 6 weeks and normally at Jeff Gibson's house.

At the EC meeting, we learn what all the complaints are all about. A concordant body was not happy with us and wanted to rent our building again.

Symbolic Blue Lodge is King.

“If we play nice with a certain appendant body, all will go away”.

January 28th, 2023, the Master of Palm Springs Lodge No.693 receives an email from Grand Lodge informing him that he has been removed from office and that our charter was suspended due to certain financial improprieties and violations of Masonic procedures.

Several officers resigned due to the belief that Grand Lodge was being less than truthful and being economical with certain information.

We are being accused of having a secret account that we are drawing money from.

I will let you just listen to the rest of this episode so that You can get the full effect of what is going on in California Masonry throughout the whole state. The Past Grand Master of Texas has been confronted with this problem as well and what will you do? Will you sit on the sidelines and expect someone else to fight this fight?

I read an article I found on the internet. It’s something I already spoke about before which is a book called “The Early Masonic Catechism” by Douglas Knoop, G.P. Jones and Douglas Hamer. The book came out  in 1943 but was reprinted in 1963 with some very important updates added to help us understand the evolution of our ritual and three-degree system.

“The very existence of this book, ‘The Early Masonic Catechisms’, cuts through those misguided allusions by cutting the primary issues that challenges genuine Masonic research, by highlighting that not only did such diversity exist, but also that earliest records of Masonic ritual, which date from 1696, highlight this fact.

This is the purpose of the book, to present both the earliest examples of Masonic ritual, and presenting the source material in full, each with a presented review of the history of each document, giving the academic appraisal of the validity of each, offering a balanced assessment.”

The book was not widely printed and had limited runs, so they are very hard to find and expensive. A hard cover back copy runs for $300 and a soft bound will run you $247.50 or more.

I finally read the name of a book I mentioned in a previous episode by Peary Rader, the original editor of IronMan Magazine from the early 1940’s.

The name of the book was called “The Rader Master Bodybuilding and Weight Gaining System” which was originally published in 1946

I then read a lecture that was delivered to the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076 9 November 2000

by Bro. Roeinton B. Khambatta

Inaugural Paper delivered to Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076 9 November 2000

The paper was to summarize (my summaries) the views expressed in AQC of the twentieth century on 'The Origins of speculative Freemasonry'.5

The author covers 10 Theories of the Origins of Speculative Freemasonry from article found in papers and research articles from Ars Quatuor Coronati Lodge, the world’s premiere masonic research lodge.

Each one of these theories sheds light in some way shape or form that might be true or untrue but to this day, no one has been able to conclusively prove them one way or another.

And yes, the Freemasons have been accused of being connected to some outrageous conspiracy theories since almost the beginning and this is one of many reasons to strengthen your Masonic Education at your lodge and individually.

I read an article that is very pertinent to today and everything that is going on all around us. It was written by Charles G. Reigner, M.P.S 1948 May.

This mason points out what freedoms mean to us in the United States. Even though it was written back in 1948, it still resonates with the times and the issues that we must confront.

The book is over 150 pages long and even shows astrological calendars for 1924 to 1932.

There is a lot of similar content found in Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy, which was written by Brother Hewitt Brown, whose book came out in 1882.

I read the section titles, "Masonic Festivals of the Holy Sts. John", found on page 87.

I continue to press the questions o Shane and what he thinks he knows about Freemasonry and what he has read about the Craft?  Shane talks about clandestine lodges and what he learned. He says t fake lodges.

Many boxers have used weights, including Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. Boxers are some of the greatest conditioned athletes on the planet.

 MM EP. 64 Another Thought About the Origins of Freemasonry

I read another article form the Philalethes Magazine called “Another Thought About the Origins of Freemasonry. It was published in 2003 and continues some of the themes that I have been following about Catholic monks being intimately involved in the activities of what we now know as Freemasonry. This happened from about 1100 to the dissolution of the Orders in about the 1500’s.

We go all the wat back to the last days of the Roman Empire in 473 to 474 AD. The Romans were finally recalled from England, and this left the country with no one to build stone monuments as the English did not have this technology.

Enter a Monk named Benedict Biskop who lived in England and left back to Rome to petition Pope Boniface V, 619-625 AD to permit him to establish a monastery at the mouth of the Wyresmith River.

Pope Boniface died never having granted this monk permission and the new Pope Honorius was no different. But in 626 AD Pope Honorius finally granted Benedict permission to establish his Abbey.

Benedict and his followers fancied themselves as builders and architects. Benedict learned much about stone building and different techniques from France and Rome during his travels.

David and I continue our conversation about healthy living, the power of the mind, cultivating positive thoughts, how we handled the Covid shutdowns from 2020 thru 2022 and more.

My friend is pigmentally challenged (he’s really dark), but he doesn’t let that bring him down. He has a positive attitude and loves to work on his yard, do things with his family on the weekends, barbequing as much as he can and get some great exercise sessions with me and my boys twice a week.

We talk meal prep, being aware of your thoughts, the effect your actions have on other people, the importance of just taking action when it comes to getting yourself out of your comfort level and gratitude.

We also talk a little bit about what goes on after our exercise sessions and what we call “gratitude time” where each one of us tells the group what we are grateful for on that day.

Did Anderson use the Cook Manuscript of 1450? Let's see what Google search says about this:

"Doctor Anderson Cooke Manuscript Use

There is no direct evidence that Doctor Anderson used the Cooke Manuscript of 1450. However, the Cooke Manuscript was used by Anderson in his own version of the "Constitutions" published in 1723, specifically lines 901-960 of the manuscript.5

The Cooke Manuscript, also known as the Matthew Cooke Manuscript (British Museum: “Additional M.S. 23,198”), was written around 1450 and was in the possession of Mr. George Payne when he compiled the "General Regulations" during his second term as Grand Master in 1720.5 Anderson included these regulations in his version of the "Constitutions" published in 1723.5

Therefore, while Doctor Anderson did not directly use the Cooke Manuscript, he incorporated parts of it into his work."

David and I have known each other since we were 7 years old and have similar upbringings. We talk about our time playing high school football together, Brady Harper gets his shoes stolen and he also practiced one time wearing Levi’s 501 Blue Jeans and running passing routes faster than all of us.

David talks about our time working out together since 2010, which was also the first time I was Master of my lodge. He mentions how he was not taking care of his health and what the consequences were of terrible eating habits, excessive drinking and overall bad habits all culminating his being diagnosed with diabetes in 2013 and what he did after what his short term memory doctor told him. 

He then takes us through his journey in taking control of his health, thoughts, and spiritual development.

Most Masons and Lodges don't think this all the way through, and the results can be more injurious than helpful.

With the advent of all the social media apps and lodges eager to post everything about what the lodge is doing, we may be setting ourselves up for a more negative response than a positive one.

This message is repeated with urgency: **Masonic philosophy** demands non-interference in civil governance. **Esoteric symbolism** guides inner transformation, not public protest. **Ritual integrity** depends on **speculative Masonry**, not social commentary. **Lodge decorum** must reflect solemnity, not trending opinions. The **Temple of Solomon** stands as a symbol of harmony, not contention. When Masons confuse civic duty with Masonic duty, they risk fracturing the **brotherhood** and diluting **Masonic knowledge**.

Repeating the core: **Spiritual growth** comes through self-mastery, not political engagement. **Personal responsibility** means rising above division. **Ancient traditions** protect the fraternity from worldly chaos. **Speculative Masonry** calls for reflection, not reaction. **Ritual depth** strengthens the inner temple, not public image.

The article "An Army On Foot, The Hard Way Is The Masonic Way" by Dwight L. Smith does not exist as a standalone work. The phrase appears to be a misattribution or conflation of themes from Smith’s well-known essay Whither Are We Traveling? (1964), a critique of modern Freemasonry.

In that essay, Smith argues that Freemasonry has lost its way by prioritizing ease, efficiency, and popularity over its traditional values of discipline, moral instruction, and personal sacrifice. He laments that Masons now seek shortcuts—such as treating charity as writing a check rather than personal service, or valuing titles over character—instead of embracing the "hard way" of self-improvement and quiet dedication.

The metaphor of an "army on foot" aligns with Smith’s belief that true Masonic progress requires slow, deliberate effort, not flashy programs or mass membership campaigns. He criticizes the dilution of standards, weak leadership, and the fragmentation of Freemasonry into side bodies that distract from the core work of the Symbolic Lodge.

Smith calls for a return to rigor, integrity, and spiritual depth—the "hard way" that builds real Masons, not just members. While the exact title "An Army On Foot, The Hard Way Is The Masonic Way" is not found in his published works, it captures the central theme of his message: authentic Freemasonry demands effort, sacrifice, and a rejection of complacency.

This article was first published in the Heredom Volume 10, 2002, a research journal put out by the Scottish Rite.

For many years, Doctor James Anderson has been accused of many negative reasons for helping to put together what we now know as the Constitutions of the Free-Masons of 1723 & 1738.

There is a lot that was going on during that time in and around England. England, Scotland, and Ireland were all fighting against each other, so why did these London Masons choose a short, red-headed Scotsman to help put together one of the most important Masonic documents ever published?

The origins of this mysterious Masonic document have been actively researched and analyzed, critiqued, and ignored since it first appeared in 1723, and we still do not fully understand why it was produced in the first place.

Brother David Stevenson is the author of both "The Origins of Freemasonry, Scotland's Century 1590-1710" and "The First Freemasons - Scotland's Early Lodges and Their Members 1988.

In part 3 of our tale, Rainman and I continue to delve into the challenges a group of brothers faced when we committed to helping our lodge get back to health and the unexpected speed bumps we came across.

 A microburst of bad weather hits Palm Springs and our lodge gets flooded, so we have to stop all activities while we take care of these issues.

Rainman spearheaded this whole project and in the middle of all of this, the Grand Lodge Project manager was switched.

The five of us continued to hold the whole thing up while we trained members to begin to assume some of these responsibilities.

The roof caving in was symbolic of us wanting to make the lodge in our image.

2016 was all about our lodge being investigated, charges of unmasonic conduct being filed, and cleaning house.

In 2017 all five of the MMs that committed to help wore many hats because that’s all we had.

All this hard work caused us to get closer together and strengthen our bonds of friendship.

In 2017 we had to suspend over 30 members for non-payment of dues and Grand Lodge audits us because of this. The next year we suspended about 12 more for the same reason and we got audited again. We get audited over 5 times in two years.

Rainman loses it because of the Trivium discussion group and all the questions the prospects have.

Pick a night for Trivium, pick a night for Hall meetings and everything else.

Rainman wanted to drop “F-BOMBS” and the prospects would not permit this.

Our lodge leadership has an emergency meeting on March 18th, 2020, to discuss COVID-19 because we had just heard from one of our brethren from an east coast lodge that the New York Grand Lodge was going to lockdown all lodges and that everyone would follow suit. We do repeat some points from the last issue because it’s still fresh in our minds.

The Grand Master of California issues his edict and locks down all lodges. Thousands of masons become angry and question the Grand Masters' authority.

My grandmother passed away during covid and we could not be there with her.

We began to have regular Zoom meetings, do wellness checks, and share toasts, Grand Lodge would have a Grand Masters Toasts every Saturday.

Zoom does have a place in Freemasonry.

We will not flatten the curve in 15 days.

We began to use Zoom to utilize our time efficiently and plan for the future.

Grand Lodge creates a Virtual Script so lodges can pay bills.

Weird things begin to happen during Zoom meetings all over the world and at lodges.

Most people who attended Zoom were not wearing pants and many lodges had their Zoom meetings hacked.

Grand Lodge formulates a Virtual Installation Ceremony for all lodges.

The Masonic Lodge was laid out for members to be socially distanced.

We get accused of having secret clandestine meetings during Covid.

We have our first stated meeting after COVID-19.

We need toilet paper for pandemics.

Our degrees are different.

We will not do double degrees.

Today, I read a section of a book called "Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy", written by Brother Robert Hewitt Brown in 1882. This Brother clearly influenced Brother I. Edward Clark in his "Royal Secret," which was published in 1923.

I read the section called "The Circle Embordered by Two Parallel Lines" found on page 129.

Finally, I read what AI has to say about the spiritual significance of the Holy Saint John the Evangelist.

If you have thought of beginning to exercise, stop thinking about it and just do it. Many people will use the excuse that they don’t have the right equipment in order to start. The reality is that you don’t need any equipment to get in great shape. Jack Lalanne created a whole program of exercises of just bodyweight movements. Do this three times per week for three to four months and you will get amazing results. Stop making excuses and pull the trigger.

In Freemasonry, too many men get caught up in trying to do too many things and trying to please all things. Focus on what your lodge's purpose is and not so much on the tools. The structure will follow the strategy and the master mind principle will give you all your answers.

Freemasonry can’t be all things to all people and a lodge cannot be all things to all people.

Fail and fail fast

Structure follows strategy

Focus on what you want to do and the result.

The lodge must have a focus and several brothers must help keep that focus up.

A quality meal always lifts morale, and we always have quality 3-course meals before a stated meeting for $20.

We had a host who would escort you to your seats. The brethren, prospects, or visitors would help serve and clean up afterward.

Rainman and the chef would argue all the time before starting meeting dinners.

Our charter is still suspended, we have been given more time to continue to work to get our charter back and Rainman was banned from attending the lodge after the November Stated meeting.

Our Inspector accused some members of being disloyal to the Craft in front of the lodge.

What does all of this mean as far as where our rituals came from and what were they trying to convey to us?

Brother Carr in our opinion could not help himself and sprinkled aspects of his transition theory throughout this document even though it is about the origins of our craft ritual.

I bring back the theory that Brother Cyril Batham proposed in a series of articles called "A New Theory" found in the Philalethes Magazine back in 1991 in two parts.
