My guest this week is Nana Badu, Founder and CEO of BADU.

BADU is a multi dimensional community development organisation. BADU is a non-profit dedicated to providing holistic and unconditional support to underserved communities. BADU engages with young people and their families through its key pillars: Sports, Mentoring and Education.

Nana worked as a PE teacher and coach at numerous schools across Hackney, specialising in on-the-ground mentorship, trauma counselling and anti racist policy in some of the most deprived inner city estates. Nana now sits on the Sport England TRAVIS board (Tackling Racist and Racist Inequality In Sport) where he works to improve access to sport justice across the UK.

In 2021, Nana Badu won the first Cyrille Regis Award at the Football Black List awards for his work in grassroots and in the community. Nana was invited to the Kings Garden party in May 2023 for his 15+ year dedication to community empowerment and was one of the late Queen Elizabeth’s remarkable Batonbearers entrusted to carry the Baton at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Cri (pronounced "Cree") deconstructs and reshapes as part of her creative process, seeking to arrive at synthesis while making (and embracing) a lot of mess. Messwork facilitates a multidisciplinary yet holistic approach to trauma recovery and abundant living. With her Bachelor of Psychology and Business from Northeastern University, a Master of Fine Arts in Communications Design from Pratt Institute, Cri integrates complex skill sets into a full-bodied foundation upon which to reinforce her work and practice. As a creator, practitioner, and educator, Cri's psychological and design expertise fuels her methodological and theoretical frameworks and approaches, exploring the inherent nature and connection across somatics, psychology, design, and mess. Currently teaching Graduate and Undergraduate Communications Design at Pratt Institute, Cri expands her name-sake practice, Cg Studio, into Messwork, an offering employing and leveraging somatics, design, and the transformative power of mess as a catalyst for growth.

Ewa Effiom is a London-based Belgo-Nigerian architect, writer and producer. He was a member of the Architecture Foundation’s New Architecture Writers’ second cohort which culminated in a critically acclaimed public programme. Mythology, collective identity, popular culture and their inextricable links to the built environment are recurring themes in his work with a focus on the mythology and folklore that different subcultures instate and associated to space. He has been published in the Architect’s Newspaper, Dwell, the AJ, ICON, Wallpaper, Frame, OnOffice, Architecture Aujourd'hui, the Modern House magazine, A Daily Dose and Ex Libris. His piece Architecture, Buildings and Conservation in MAJA was nominated for best piece in the 2022 Estonian Architecture Awards and came second place in the Tallinn Architecture Biennale’s 2021 Curatorial Competition with a proposal entitled Adaptive Re-use.

His film Eagle Mansion was premiered at the 2021 Urban Film Festival in Perth and screened at 2022 Melbourne Design Week. He was awarded the 2022 How To Residency at the Canadian Centre for Architecture entitled “How Not To Be A Developer” which is the year that his second film “Beck Road” premiered at the Open City festival. Beck Road later screened at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale entitled Laboratory of the Future as part of the curator, Lesley Lokko’s Carnival public programme.

After graduating he became an associate lecturer on the MA in Architecture + Urbanism at the Manchester School of Architecture, a post he held until 2022 and he is a visiting critic at the Estonian Institute of Technology and London Metropolitan University.

Sabinna Rachimova is an opinion leader for the future generation of creatives. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, she worked for the leading fashion house Christian Dior and contemporary London brand Mary Katrantzou. As a child, she learned traditional soviet handcraft from her grandmother, developing a deeply ingrained appreciation for the craft. This early influence was a key inspiration for her namesake brand. As a double immigrant (born in Central Asia, raised in Europe, and now based in London) Sabinna is incredibly passionate about inclusivity and equal opportunities. In addition to her work as an acclaimed designer, Sabinna is a public speaker, spreading the word about both fashion tech and sustainable fashion, as well as a consultant with a focus on fashion start-ups and education across Europe and the UK. Since 2018, she has lectured at the University of Arts London, teaching on the MA Fashion Entrepreneurship & Innovation course, focusing on sustainable business concepts to encourage her students to disrupt the industry. Mona Bani is the founder and MD at Revoke⁠, a non-profit advocating for the rights and welfare of young displaced people, and co-founder of the award-winning media platform Untelevised⁠, which produces media from the grassroots to explore possibilities for social change.

She has over 10 years of experience in the socio-political sector, ranging from the Cabinet Office, to the refugee camp in Calais, and she's particularly passionate about bridging the gap between those affected by policy and those who shape policy. Her own parents were political refugees and she grew up in Denmark before migrating to the UK as a teenager, and she's appeared on much media speaking against the hostile environment. She's been awarded as one of the 2020 Clore Lived Experience Leaders in the Refugee and Migration sector; a Thirty Percy Changemaker; and an Aspen Leadership fellow.

Before joining the CLT, Gordon has been leading environmental charities for the past decade, most recently as CEO of the Eden Project, following periods at the helm of the national cycling charity and the Royal Horticultural Society. Yugoslavia-born Ana Kerin (1986) studied fine art and sculpture at the Academy for Fine Art and Design in Slovenia and the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

A rising star on the circuit, the academic award-winning Kerin has exhibited in group shows and represented Slovenia in European biennales for young, contemporary artists. Working across mediums, from charcoal to canvas and clay, Kerin has developed an expressive artistic signature. Her undulating silhouettes and free-form shapes are present across her works, from her large-scale paintings and sculptures to her pottery. Each artwork questions the relationship between form, fluidity and function.

The notion of connection informs much of Kerin’s work. She is interested in the traces that linger, like a thumbprint in clay; a brushstroke on paper. Each soulful expression is a reflection of an existence. It leaves an imprint on a person; on a soul; on the world.

Kana London was born fortuitously as a result of her training in sculpture & her background in fine art, eventually becoming a fully developed project in London in 2012.

Sculpting and an affinity for working with clay led her to wanting to apply the principles of my art work - the tactile, hand built aesthetics, the traces of my fingerprints and hands on the surface - into functional ceramics.

Ana Kerin's approach to work is experimental and playful, as she never follow a procedure, and invent new recipes daily. Ana works with a unique mixture of clays and mixes her own glazes, often turning her back on traditional ceramic practice. Hand building, rather than turning on the wheel, further emphasizes the individuality of each piece.

Cri (pronounced "Cree") deconstructs and reshapes as part of her creative process, seeking to arrive at synthesis while making (and embracing) a lot of mess. Messwork facilitates a multidisciplinary yet holistic approach to trauma recovery and abundant living. With her Bachelor of Psychology and Business from Northeastern University, a Master of Fine Arts in Communications Design from Pratt Institute, and her ongoing education at the Institute of Core Energetics as a practitioner in training, Cri integrates complex skill sets into a full-bodied foundation upon which to reinforce her work and practice. As a creator, practitioner, and educator, Cri's psychological and design expertise fuels her methodological and theoretical frameworks and approaches, exploring the inherent nature and connection across somatics, psychology, design, and mess. Currently teaching Graduate and Undergraduate Communications Design at Pratt Institute, Cri expands her name-sake practice, Cg Studio, into Messwork, an offering employing and leveraging somatics, design, and the transformative power of mess as a catalyst for growth.

In her own Messwork, Cri navigated various academic and personal therapeutic territories before finding somatics. A health crisis in her late twenties catapulted her inquiry into more robust healing modalities, punctuating the significance and impact of being treated as a whole rather than a series of fragments. Andy C Pratt is UNESCO Chair of Global Creative Economy, Director of the Centre of Culture and the Creative Industries, and Professor of Cultural Economy, City, University of London.

He previously established the first Department of Culture and the Creative Industries in the world at King’s College London. Alongside this he previously taught at LSE, and UCL, and had held visiting professor positions at many global institutions including in SMU (Singapore) and ZHdK/ETH (Zurich).

He specialises in the analysis of the cultural industries globally. This research has three strands. The first focuses on the social and economic dynamics of clustering and knowledge exchange. The second strand concerns the definition and measurement of employment in the cultural, or creative, industries. The third concerns cultural governance and policy making at the national, regional and urban scales. He has worked with UNESCO, the World Bank and many national and city government on these topics.

His current research concerns trans-local cultural production chains and is funded by EU Horizon 2020: Cicerone.

He has previously explored projects on urban creative economy, clustering, knowledge transfer, innovation and creativity & until 2023 he was Editor-in-Chief of the international interdisciplinary journal City, Culture and Society.

He runs the Creative Research and Innovation Centre (CRAIC) at Loughborough London with Andrew Chitty, and he is also working with the Industrial Strategy team at UKRI, leading strategy for the Audience of the Future and the Creative Industries Clusters programmes. He brings a wealth of experience in cultural and creative industries policy and delivery – nationally and regionally. Graham was the Corporate Policy Director for Arts Council England, before setting up Creative London with the Mayor’s office in 2004 – which was responsible for establishing Film London and the London Design Festival. During her studies in the arts Nicolette worked at the Whitechapel Gallery, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Tate and aspreyjacques gallery.

Nicolette holds a Masters in Digital Art History from Birkbeck College, a Diploma in Modern and Contemporary Art and Design from Christie’s Education, and from the University of the Witwatersrand a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Business Administration) and a Bachelor of Arts.

As Co-director of Outset Contemporary Art Fund, an international, independent charity that pools donations from partners and patron circles to support contemporary art, challenge thinking and further the artistic discourse to inspire new audiences, Nicolette has led Outset’s Studiomakers campaign, that brokers truly affordable spaces for creative production and cultural consumption.

E44: Future-Proofing Local Talent: Aligning Education with Tomorrow's In-Demand Skills w/Dujon Harvey from Hackney Council

Dujon's career can be characterised as ambitious, aspirational, and determined. He is approaching 10 years with Hackney Council, having worked his way up from a senior employment advisor to the Assistant Director of Employment, Skills & Adult Learning (ESAL).

One of four children born and raised in Tottenham, North London, by hard working migrant parents from the Caribbean - an industrious and ambitious community - Dujon was aware from a young age that hard work is not rewarded in equal measure.

Having first hand experience of his dad's community work with youth centres and grass roots football, as well as social housing management through his Mum's work, Dujon was guided early on towards serving the public.

Drawing from his own experience of deprivation and marginalisation, where professional career guidance was non existent, and role models were limited to local sports stars and entertainers, and through studying Sociology and Social Anthropology,

Dujon sharpened his understanding of societal inequality and solidified a will to change it. Dujon says his aim has always been to support everyone in realising their potential, but especially to raise up the aspirations of the disenfranchised. And that's exactly what he's doing at Hackney Council, striving to create opportunities for residents to thrive in a growing economy, whilst working to affect policies and structures in a way that will raise the long term aspirations of the whole community.

Dujon is passionate about developing an infrastructure in Hackney and London, which disrupts societal norms and breaks down the structures that perpetuate unequal access to secure livelihoods. Dujon and the ESAL teams create thousands of opportunities for residents to access learning, training and jobs through ambitious partnerships with businesses and a variety of support programmes accessible by practically anyone from Hackney. The ambitions of this service delivery is to reveal pathways to access an array of different careers, which are often hidden from view. Making sure everyone can imagine themselves in the job they are perfect for, even if society has told them they are not.

Mac Van Dam is a multi-disciplinary designer, inventor, and artist. His work is rooted in a desire to bring the benefits of biological/living sensibilities to the built environment. Before founding design studios in the UK, Mac was a research member at the Living Architecture Systems Group in Toronto, a post-graduate student at UCL's Bio-integrated Design Lab, and has worked at internationally acclaimed architecture firms. His work has been shown at the Lisbon Triennale, London Design Festival, Venice Biennale, Coachella, and other international design exhibitions.

With a team at ZINC, a mission-driven incubator, he is developing innovative architectural products that utilise the vast vertical surfaces in urban environments to host biodiverse ecologies.

Hypha Studios was born when Camilla wanted to curate exhibitions in non-gallery contexts, aware of how many interesting spaces were available but empty. As a sole practitioner, she found it hard to engage landlords, but by setting up a charity that offers “quality control” of both the art and use of the space, she was able to bring together emerging artists, councils, property owners and cultural institutions in mutually beneficial collaborations.

Gee Sinha is the Founder of ReSpace, a social enterprise that takes beloved derelict buildings and brings them back to life for use by local people. They do this by reusing wasted resources and building shared community wealth. They make use of the things other people throw away. For past projects, they have made good use of second-hand furniture, leftover building materials, surplus food, and unwanted instruments.

The son of a coal miner and a chemist, Garry Hunter studied engineering, not art, in his home town of South Shields. After working on photography assignments worldwide for 25 years, ranging from Apple Computer to the UN Population Fund, he co-founded Fitzrovia Noir as an arts collective in 2008. He led on the first phase of the £2m Cultural Spring Arts Council England Creative People and Places initiative, co-creating work with residents of the neighbourhoods where he grew up. He established The Tommy Flowers community pub in Poplar, cited at The House of Lords as 'a new model of creative community engagement' contributing to The Centre For London paper on post-Covid uses of the high street, that fed into Mayoral policy. He is a visiting artist at Roskilde University, Denmark, maintains a live/work space in Berlin and is, with his Italian partner, artist Doralba Picerno, working on setting up a residency/workshop programme at a long empty 2.5 acre forest site by Lake Bracciano, on the edge of Rome. He is the author of 12 books, two of which are best sellers on contemporary urban art, translated into French, Brazilian Portuguese and Swedish. He develops concepts through public consulation and commissions public art, most recently a 10m square mural on Dee Street Poplar, a collaboration between French photo-realist Zabou and Australian spraypaint-pointillist Jimmy C, further advocacy for working with international partners that is at the core of his practice. Part of the Untold Stories programme with the GLA's Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm, this culminates with the launch of a special publication 'Unearthing Poplar' in March 2024, the first project by the newly-formed Tommy Flowers Foundation, that builds on the success of the eponymous pub, aiming to encourage innovation and civic pride. 🔹 Find out more about Fitzrovia Noir here

Originally from a small town in East Lancashire, Jeanette Barnes studied a Fine Art degree at Liverpool Polytechnic were she fell in love with the energy of the city, the people, noise and architecture and decided to make the urban environment her subject matter. She went to London and studied Post graduates at the Royal Academy School and Royal College of Art. Drawing and printmaking are the main stays of her practice with a slight detour in putting found objects from the Thames together into sculptural collages. All her work is about a sense of history, journey and how people interact in city spaces, with the belief that people bring buildings and architecture alive.

She has had a studio in Hackney Wick for over 20 years documenting the change in the area as well as going to other cities around the world to draw on location and produce large works back at her studio. She has had many solo and joint exhibitions, has been awarded scholarships and prizes, wrote a book on sketching with her husband in lockdown, teaches drawing and has recently won the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize.

Tamsin Ace was previously Director of Creative Programmes and Collections at London’s Museum of the Home in Hackney. She also spent 12 years at the Southbank Centre, departing as Head of Public Programming in 2019. Now, however, Tamsin is the first person to take on a brand new role as Director, of East Bank Cultural Quarter. East Bank is the UK’s newest cultural quarter that rests in the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The Mayor of London’s vision for East Bank has placed the £1.1 billion as the most significant single investment in London’s culture since the legacy of the 1851 Great Exhibition, and will shape the cultural life of the city for the 21st century and beyond. Opening from autumn 2023, East Bank is a unique collaboration between cultural institutions, world leading universities and the people of the Olympic boroughs. East Bank is made up of Sadler’s Wells East, BBC Music Studios and V&A East & V&A East Storehouse as well as a brand new University College London (UCL East) and University of the Arts London's London College of Fashion.
