We crossed over with Bourbon Legends — a podcast co-hosted by Justin, Jeff, and Kevin where they taste bourbon and dig into urban legends, conspiracy theories, cryptids, and the stranger corners of history. This week’s topic hits right at home for this channel.

The 1980s Satanic Panic and its war on Dungeons and Dragons. Before D&D became the most popular tabletop game in the world, it was being blamed in congressional hearings for teen suicides, pulled from toy store shelves, and condemned from pulpits across America. In 1983, a grieving mother named Patricia Pulling founded an organisation called BADD — Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons — and spent a decade on national television arguing the game was an occult recruitment tool. The campaign was built on fabricated statistics the CDC later completely disproved. And it permanently changed the game we love.

This episode covers the full story: the James Dallas Egbert case and the false D&D steam tunnel theory that started it all, the Mazes and Monsters TV movie starring Tom Hanks that spread the lie to millions, why TSR removed demons and devils from the rules in 1985 and renamed them tanar’ri and baatezu, how that decision ended up enriching D&D lore rather than killing it, and how Gary Gygax was pushed out of his own company the same year. We pour Von Payne Black — a black currant-infused bourbon with a gargoyle pour spout, which felt entirely appropriate — and get into all of it.

If you’re interested in conspiracy theories, cryptids, urban legends, and great bourbon, Bourbon Legends covers all of it every week. Links below.

BOURBON OF THE EPISODE
Von Payne Black | Black Currant-Infused Bourbon | Von Payne Spirits, Clearwater, FL
A full-bodied base bourbon aged a minimum of three years in American oak char #3 barrels, infused with all-natural black currant berries mashed and steeped for two to four weeks.

The result: rich caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak from the barrel, layered with bold, naturally tart black currant and a deep ruby red colour. Poured through Von Payne’s iconic gargoyle spout — which, for an episode about a moral panic over demons, felt like the only responsible choice.
Mash Bill: 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley | Infused with 100% all-natural black currant | Proof: 90 (45% ABV) | Not flavoured — infused.
Learn more: vonpaynespirits.com

WHAT WE COVER
• The fear climate of the early 1980s that made the panic possible
• The James Dallas Egbert case — the false D&D steam tunnel theory, the private investigator who invented it, and the suppressed true story
• Mazes and Monsters — the 1982 Tom Hanks TV movie based on a lie
• Patricia Pulling, BADD, and the fabricated statistics
• What the CDC, AAS, and Health and Welfare Canada actually found when they investigated
• The 1985 Monster Manual revision: demons and devils removed, tanar’ri and baatezu born
• Gary Gygax pushed out of TSR the same year — and how the panic contributed
• Why the panic accidentally made D&D more popular and its lore richer
• Von Payne Black: the gargoyle pour spout, the black currant infusion, and tasting notes

SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW BOURBON LEGENDS
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPL0_G0jrPLtq43cNB5iXYA

Subscribe to Bigjuicyhog’s Tome of Lore for weekly D&D, Pathfinder, and TTRPG lore deep-dives.
If you enjoyed this crossover and want more conspiracies, cryptids, urban legends, and great bourbon every week, check out the Bourbon Legends channel. In 1944, 30 people saw it, Time Magazine ran the story, and monster hunters descended on McCall. In 1946, a physician in a group of 20 watched it dive and resurface for an extended period. In 1954, the town held a national naming contest — won by a woman from Virginia with a punchline from a radio comedy show. In 1985, the Idaho Fish and Game's own fisheries biologist said maybe Sharlie is just smarter than us. A 2023 video went viral. And nobody has ever proven what it is.

(Kevin is behind the camera. As always. We have accepted this.)

BOURBON OF THE EPISODE
Eagle Rare 10 Year | Kentucky Straight Bourbon | Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort, KY
From the same distillery as Pappy Van Winkle, Blanton’s, and George T. Stagg. Eagle Rare uses Buffalo Trace’s Mashbill #1 — a low-rye recipe (believed to be approximately 75% corn, 10% rye, 15% malted barley, though Buffalo Trace has never officially confirmed the ratios) — and is aged a minimum of 10 years with every barrel hand-selected. Originally launched at 101 proof in 1975, it’s been bottled at 90 proof since 2005. Then the fire department chief saw it in his headlights. Then a deputy fired a gunshot at it and it walked calmly to the guardrail, made eye contact, and stepped into the river. No blood trail found. Bulleit Bourbon

Welcome back to Bourbon Legends — where we open something great and then go somewhere strange.

This week, Justin and Jeff pour Bulleit Kentucky Straight Bourbon — the high-rye frontier whiskey that’s been turning heads since Augustus Bulleit first made it in 1830 — and dig into one of the most credible cryptid cases in American history: the Loveland Frogman.

A 4-foot bipedal frog-like creature with glowing orange eyes and an overwhelming putrid smell has been reported near the Little Miami River outside Loveland, Ohio since at least 1955. In 1972, two police officers filed independent reports on back-to-back nights describing the same creature on the same stretch of road. One of them fired a shot at it. It stepped calmly over a guardrail, maintained eye contact, and walked into the river. No blood trail was found. Then in April 2026, two Ohio state representatives introduced a bipartisan bill to make the Loveland Frogman the state’s official cryptid. Justin and Jeff break down 70 years of sightings, the dead dog detail, the wand that emits sparks, and whether this is the cryptid case that finally holds up.

(Kevin’s not here. The Frogman may or may not be involved.)

BOURBON OF THE EPISODE
Bulleit Kentucky Straight Bourbon | Bulleit Distilling Co. | Diageo
A true high-rye frontier bourbon with roots going back to 1830, when Augustus Bulleit first created the recipe in Louisville, Kentucky. Revived by his great-great-grandson Tom Bulleit in 1987. The high rye content — at 28% one of the highest in mainstream bourbon — gives Bulleit its distinctive spicy, bold character.
Mash Bill: 68% corn, 28% rye, 4% malted barley | Proof: 90 (45% ABV) | Aged minimum 6 years
Nose: Cinnamon and nutmeg spiced sandalwood, leather, corn, and vanilla. Palate: Bold and spicy — cinnamon, black pepper, and clove leading into caramel and vanilla with a medium-bodied mouthfeel.

Finish: Warm, medium-long, with lingering spice, toasted oak, and a touch of dried fruit.
Learn more: bulleit.com

WHAT WE COVER
• The 1955 Branch Hill encounter: three creatures, a spark-emitting wand, and a smell of almonds and alfalfa
• The 1972 police sightings: Officer Shockey and Deputy Matthews on back-to-back nights, the gunshot, no blood trail
• The 2016 Pokémon Go sighting and dashcam footage
• The fire department chief who saw it from his car headlights
• Why the wand from 1955 breaks every conventional explanation
• The iguana theory — and its significant problems
• Ohio’s bipartisan bill to make it the official state cryptid
• Bulleit Bourbon: history, high-rye character, and tasting notes

SUBSCRIBE
New episodes every week. Stage one: fake archaeological discoveries to destroy global religion. Stage two: a global holographic sky show projecting religious figures that eventually merge into a single Antichrist. Stage three: satellite-beamed ELF wave messages sent directly into people’s minds. Stage four: the arrival of the world leader. Justin and Jeff break down every stage — and ask whether drone light shows at the Olympics, UAP congressional testimony, and the New Jersey drone incident of 2024 are making this less far-fetched by the year.

(Kevin’s still out — but we’re told he’ll be back soonish. A meticulous blend of bourbons from Kentucky (8yr), Indiana (5, 6, and 9yr), Tennessee (8yr), and Maryland (5 and 6yr), unified at 100 proof — 23% rye mash bill giving richness and complexity throughout.

Nose: Honey, candied strawberry, dark cherry, grilled cantaloupe, lavender, fennel, cocoa, brown butter, and cardamom. Why do millions of unconnected strangers share the same vivid, specific memories of things that never happened? Is it just bad memory — or did something go very wrong when CERN fired up the Large Hadron Collider?

We cover the original Mandela Effect (what people actually misremember about Nelson Mandela), the most famous examples — Berenstain vs Berenstein, the Monopoly Man’s monocle, Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, Sinbad’s genie movie, and more — plus the theory that CERN’s experiments cracked open a dimensional rift and merged two parallel realities into one, leaving us with contradictory memories of both.

(Kevin’s out again. We’re genuinely starting to wonder if he’s in a different timeline.)

BOURBON OF THE EPISODE

Wilderness Trail Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon | Wilderness Trail Distillery, Danville, KY

Their flagship whiskey — and a piece of bourbon history.

When it launched, it was the first bottled-in-bond wheated sweet mash bourbon released since Prohibition. Crafted with less corn and a higher percentage of “middle grains” to showcase subtle grain flavour.

Nose: Sweet vanilla and charred oak.
