This week we wrap up the series by asking a simple question: now that we know who Jesus says He is, what does it look like to abide in Him?

Neither of us had ever studied these verses back to back like this. Jesus is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Door, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the True Vine. Looking at all seven together, we saw how they connect. The vine feeds you like bread. The vinedresser prunes so the light can come in. The shepherd leads you. We also talk about how these truths have moved from our heads to our hearts, and how we are seeing Jesus more clearly in the Old Testament as the fulfillment of everything that pointed to Him.

In this episode we talk about:

What each I Am statement teaches us about who Jesus is and how they fit together

Why abiding is a daily choice and a lifelong walk, and why fruit grows in its season and not overnight

Jamie's story of full surrender at 37, and why you can only take people as far as you have gone yourself

The hard question of whether Jesus is still enough if God prunes away everything, and what Job, Joseph, the faithful in Hebrews 11, and Paul show us about that

The spiritual warfare that comes when you sit deeply in God's Word, and the promise that winter ends and His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3)

A story about a woman who kept asking God to speak to her, and what He asked her in return

Practical ways to abide: get in the Word and obey, show up when you do not feel like it, be part of a local church, be careful about what you consume, run your thoughts through Philippians 4:8, examine yourself and invite the Spirit to show you what needs to go, and find discipleship

We also say something plainly about church. We believe Scripture calls us into community with other believers, and that watching church from the couch every Sunday is not the same as being part of a local body. If you live somewhere where finding a sound, Bible believing church is hard, please email us at hello@rootedininkpodcast.com. We have connections across the country and around the world, and we would love to help you find a church or a Bible study group.

Next, we begin a slow walk through the book of Romans, starting with Romans 1:16 and 17. Please read Romans 1:1 through 17 before then so you have the full context. Romans is the practical application of everything we have learned in the I Am series. It tells us who we are, and it calls out sin.

If this episode encouraged you, would you subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend? It helps more people find Rooted in Ink. Because the fruit is the proof of what you're attached to."

A line to sit with:

"Jesus doesn't simply make dead branches look alive. He brings us into Himself and gives us His life."

Scripture referenced: John 15:1–5 · Galatians 5:16–25 · Romans 11:17–24 · Isaiah 53 · Jude

This is the final "I Am" statement in the series — but not the end. The other 1,499 followed it. 450 died — the only survivors were saved because the pile of bodies beneath them became a cushion. Nothing was chasing them. No wolf, no danger. They just followed.

That's the animal Jesus compares you to in John 10. Not a lion. Not an eagle. A sheep — dumb, defenseless, with no sense of direction, prone to wander off a cliff in a perfect environment for no reason at all. This week, Jamie and Crystal pick up exactly where they left off with "I am the door," reading John 10:11–16 in full (ESV and NIV) and tracing the Good Shepherd back through Ezekiel 34's warning about false shepherds, Isaiah 40's tender prophecy of one who "gathers the lambs in his arms," and David's own testimony as a literal shepherd who killed a lion and a bear to protect his flock.

But this episode doesn't stay comfortable. Jesus draws a hard line between Himself and the "hired hand" — someone who's paid to watch the sheep but runs the moment a wolf shows up, because he doesn't actually love them. Jamie and Crystal apply that directly to teachers and leaders who tell people what they want to hear instead of the truth, and they ask a question most people avoid: are you actually following Jesus, or is Christianity just familiar to you?

They go straight at the objection almost everyone has asked at some point — "how could a good God send people to hell?" — and argue it's the wrong question entirely. They unpack the single most sobering line in the whole conversation, Matthew 7's "depart from me, I never knew you," and explain why that should unsettle you more than anything in Revelation.

And they make a claim that will not sit quietly with everyone: that Christianity is the only faith where "the verdict comes before the trial" — where you're declared not guilty before you've done a single thing to earn it, while every other religious system asks you to do enough to outweigh your failures.

It's a conversation about sovereignty, surrender, and what it actually means to know a shepherd instead of just knowing about one — and it closes with a genuine, unhurried prayer for anyone listening who isn't sure which fold they belong to.

If this one challenges you, that's not an accident. Come sit with it.

Scripture referenced: John 10:11–19 · Ezekiel 34 · Isaiah 40:11 · Psalm 23 · 1 Samuel 17:34–35 · John 3:16 · Matthew 7:21–23 · Matthew 25:1–13 · John 19:30

Keep your mind rooted in truth and your heart anchored in Christ. Then you realize how dark it really was."

Scripture referenced: John 8:12 · Genesis 1:1–5 · Isaiah 42 · Romans 1:18–21 · Psalm 119:105 · 2 Corinthians 4:3–6 · Revelation 21–22

Music licensed through Soundstripe.

Code: OOEYC7PZW0KI10FV, 6FGYONEDXEWEQTUK, NL16DYK8HBKVFAEV

Follow us on Instagram

Support our Podcast Here

Theo of Golden by Allen Levi - Amazon (non-affiliate)

Illumination of the Temple Article 1

Illumination of the Temple Article 2

DC Talk - In the Light Song - Official Site

Shane & Shane - In the Light

</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:57:35</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/c2e0ca7f-8ec0-41fb-87c3-32254e1dd2e5/logos/25d0eefd-d2fe-44e9-a5f4-e42586baec19.jpeg"/><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>7</itunes:episode><itunes:title>E7 - The I AM Statements "Light of the World"</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

E6 - The I AM Statements "Bread of Life"

You wouldn't survive on one slice of bread a week.
