They just aren't doing it alone. In Episode 20, Deraj and Frank Bentley get into how to build the right circle around your music, on purpose. A Dominican University study found people who wrote their goals down, shared them and checked in weekly hit about 76% of them, compared with 43% for those going it alone. And per a Music Support survey, 77% of people who make music for a living say they regularly feel lonely.

They cover three honest truths. One: a DIY career is lonely by design. Solitude makes the work, but isolation stalls the career. Two: followers aren't your friends. Five real ones will move you further than 50,000 followers. Three: community won't happen by accident. Build your circle like you're hiring for a role, set a standing rhythm, network laterally instead of chasing the 100K artist, and fill your gaps with people whose strengths cover your weak spots. Your move this week: reach out to five artists on your level, ask for nothing, and be a fan first.

Plus: a Heat Check on four comedy classics, audiobook bundling and your royalties, the Street Fighter trailer, the iPod's return without Apple, the GTA radio stations, and games bringing in real artists.

In Episode 19, Deraj and Frank Bentley turn that one sentence into a full gut check, a five-question framework for telling whether it's actually time to keep going, change plans, or walk away, instead of deciding on a bad day.

They start by taking apart the lie most of us tell ourselves. "I've tried everything" usually means you tried a dozen things and quit each one a couple of weeks in, and almost all of the streaming money paid to independent artists last year went to the ones who stayed consistent, not the ones chasing the next shiny thing. But consistency isn't a magic pill either: you can be consistent at the wrong plan for three years. From there it's two honest quitting stories, the show that pushed Deraj to leave his label and go independent, and the season Frank stopped chasing money and finally made it, and a simple homework assignment: write down what you tried, how long you did it, and what you measured.

The middle of the episode is the diagnosis. "It's not working" is really three different problems, reach, retention and revenue, and you have to find the one that's actually leaking. They make the case for auditing your career like a car on the lift, for trusting your craft while letting real data inform your gut (including the ad-funnel call Deraj made against his own experts), and for being honest about whether the industry is a real wall or just an excuse, in a year when 55 million tracks got zero plays and roughly half of the 100,000 songs uploaded daily are AI. Then the hardest questions: are the songs actually good enough, who deserves to critique them, and what does "working" even look like for you, because a million streams can still feel like nothing if you never defined the win. They close with how to find your superfans by studying the one fan who already rocks with you, how to reframe every no as a data point, and the one takeaway for the whole episode: don't let "it's not working" stay a feeling. Give it a number, a date and a reason, and make the call on purpose.

Plus the segments: a Heat Check on four classic albums, why distributors are panicking as direct-to-consumer and AI build-your-own tools take off, a hands-on look at Meta's new Muse AI agent, and which placements are actually worth celebrating.

He did all of it without a label. In Episode 18 Deraj and Frank Bentley sit down with him for a full walk through how: selling CDs at a gas station in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a year and a half of free shows, and a notebook he filled at 5am every morning with the same two lines. Nobody is coming to save you. Support is not entitled.

The conversation turns practical fast. Why dialing in your live show matters more than anything (you can get booked once, but getting rebooked is the job). Why you don't need ten million dollars when you don't owe people money. His two operating principles, people over projects and intention. Who to hire first and why he learned to run a record label by studying Walmart. Why cash flow matters more than your bank balance, what to do with $330 a month in streaming royalties, and why he wouldn't spend years fixing his weaknesses again.

The back half gets into the numbers and the mindset. His first five-figure month and first six-figure year, how he picked his price by saying numbers until one scared him, how his wife taught him to build a price instead of making one up, and why the biggest flex for an artist is the authority to say no. He shares the one sentence he takes into every room, the questions he sat with to find it, and the full story of a song that hit 10,000 videos before anyone told him.

Deraj just got booked to perform at a boxing event in Spain because of a sync licensing deal. Frank came through with the blueprint for creating a full song in 30 minutes. And we got into the conversation that every indie artist in 2026 needs to hear: how to create high-quality music fast enough to keep up with industry demand, and why going direct-to-fan isn't optional anymore.

We broke down the Steve Stout interview on why your favorite artists are going independent, what Tidal's new AI music policy actually means for your royalties, and had the most spirited Fresh Prince vs. Martin debate you'll hear this year. Plus Frank revealed he went to the Kanye Bully Tour without telling Deraj — and paid for it in the most Florida way possible.

Whether you're chasing sync deals, building your fan base, or just trying to figure out how to make great music without burning 6 hours per session — this one's got the answers and the receipts.

McKinney Griffin is a musician turned director, cinematographer and editor — "what happens when somebody refuses to pick just one lane." Ray Rock (Raymond Castro) is an award-winning producer and DJ who's worked with Lecrae, Andy Mineo and Social Club Misfits, and now coaches and mentors artists from behind the scenes. After a laundry-vs-dishes debate and a heat chat about GTA 6 literally transforming Miami into Vice City, the real conversation begins.

Ray Rock frames it: there's a specific feeling to being "part of the machine," but a different confidence in knowing how the machine works — and sometimes stepping back isn't quitting, it's getting a wider angle. McKinney makes it personal: he thought being the poster-boy recording artist was the only lane until he found the "back door" of sync licensing, left the label to build his own system, and ended up licensing his music, becoming a present stay-at-home dad, seeing his first six figures, and coaching another artist — even while admitting the pivot honestly felt like giving up at first. Ray Rock adds the story of Delges Mustafa, who stepped back from his own spotlight to work creative for Andy Mineo and ended up designing clothing Jay-Z wore in Paris. The throughline: as the artist you're subject to the system, but behind the scenes you can build your own — and real success stops being everyone knowing your name and becomes your family getting the best version of you, which is why Ray Rock is stepping back to the front with his single "I'm Becoming."

Then it gets honest. McKinney tells the story of performing for 70,000 people in a stadium in Spain as a boxer's walkout — and realizing the moment wasn't about him, kicking the camera back to the fighter as the crowd erupted ("playing background," and the song was literally called "Moment"). The background gives you leverage but also somewhere to hide ("am I still serving, or scared to be seen?"); nothing is lost, everything is an ingredient; there's a difference between visibility and value, between being famous and being necessary; the spotlight is a tool, not your home; and the aim was never to stop struggling — it's to persevere well while you do. Ray Rock closes on the parable of the talents and a plain charge: get into community, don't isolate, and don't be a bum.

Mental health in the music industry is one of the most important conversations nobody is having — until now.

In Episode 8 of The Neue.Indie Podcast, we start with the Heat Check: a Christian rapper named Datin just dropped a 10-minute diss track against an online critic — and the debate about whether a faith-based artist can go there is real. Then we cover music business news (the RIAA and Grammys pushing for mandatory AI labeling on streaming platforms), react to the Doomsday trailer (Robert Downey Jr. is back as a Marvel villain), and get into whether AI data centers are quietly draining the world's water supply — at a rate of one bottle of water per 3 ChatGPT prompts.

Then we go deep on the main topic: mental health in the music industry.

73% of independent musicians report experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression tied to their work. For artists between 18 and 25, that number is 80%. And yet, the industry still glamorizes the grind, treats burnout like a badge of honor, and expects artists to suffer in silence.

We talked about all of it — hustle culture's grip on creative people, the silence stigma in hip-hop, why Kendrick made therapy mainstream, whether faith can be your therapist, personal stories about suicidal ideation, what happens when your whole identity is tied to your music career, and the affirmations every indie artist should be reading before the next bad month hits.

This is the most personal episode we've recorded. We hope it reaches the artist who needs it.

That's Wes Writer's life for the last 10 years. Grammy on the shelf. Full independence on the table. And at 3:30 in the afternoon on a Tuesday, he's not at a job.

For the first time ever, Deraj and Frank bring a guest to The Neue.Indie Podcast. Wes Writer (Wes Ryder) is a songwriter first — but also a producer, A&R, manager, and serial builder. His work spans Christian hip hop and the mainstream, from writing a hook that did 150 million streams on YouTube (for $400) to landing a Grammy for his work on LeCrae's Church Clothes 4. He manages KB, one of the most successful independent Christian artists working today. He's the top-rated songwriter on SoundBetter, has run national ad campaigns for Oreo, Papa John's, and KFC, and has worked writers' camps with Sony — all without ever signing anything.

In this episode, they get into the full story: the Matty B work-for-hire lesson, the Fruity Loops origin, what it actually means to "be number two," why relational plays matter more than upfront money, and the calculated risk he took when he quit his corporate job two years into his marriage with a three-month-old at home. Plus — why he thinks 10 years of freedom is a bigger flex than the Grammy.

The thesis is blunt. The money is already there. Most artists just aren't collecting it. Spotify paid out roughly $11 billion in royalties last year and around 80% of it went to independent artists and small labels — yet most artists still feel broke, because they only know one or two of the ten-plus ways their music can pay them.

Deraj and Frank walk the whole map: the difference between the publishing side and the master side, performance and mechanical royalties, why AI can't legally regurgitate your lyrics (they're published work), and the accounts most artists have never set up — a PRO, the MLC, SoundExchange, Songtrust. Then Frank opens his own ecosystem as free game: SoundBetter as the launch pad ("one client, 30 songs, five figures"), music libraries that pay quarterly for work he already did, and the sleeper income streams artists ignore — coaching, sample packs (he recorded 100 ad-libs and sold them), sound design and mnemonics (that Netflix "ta-dum" is a six-figure project), and voice acting as maybe the easiest way to monetize your voice. The throughline: the artist who thrives in this era doesn't have to be the most streamed or the most popular — it's the most structured.

The back half turns the segments into their own arguments. A Mickey Shiloh clip makes the case that Patreon and Bandcamp aren't the saviors they were — with tools like Lovable you can build your own direct-to-consumer store in 30 minutes and own the real estate you sell on (Frank's honest counter: nobody talks about the sweat equity that takes). Resident Evil making back 130% of its budget in 48 hours becomes proof the art isn't dead; an AI robot dismantling a fighter in the octagon becomes a nervous laugh about where this is all going; PlayStation killing physical discs and admitting you never owned your digital games sets up an ownership debate; and a genre-blending GTA 6 single plus an Eric Cameron clip land the licensing lesson — in the consumer market crossing genres makes you harder to categorize, but in licensing it makes you more useful.

Wiz Khalifa just announced he's leaving the independent route to go back to a label because he's tired of being his own manager, email writer, and money-mover — and that one decision opens up a much bigger conversation about the taboo around "signing," what the right deal would actually have to look like, and why treating it as indie-versus-label is the wrong frame entirely.

Writer's block isn't a creative problem — it's a honesty problem. In Episode 12, Deraj and Frank break down why creative ruts happen, what artists like LeCrae, LaRussell, and Russ have said about getting out of them, and why the most common advice (just push through) is actually making it worse. The real unlock? Collaboration, observation, and the willingness to write the thing you're scared to write.

They also get into the BMG and Suno AI licensing deal and what it really means for independent artists who still remember when streaming was supposed to be the future. The math on AI royalties is wild — if streaming pays fractions of a penny per play, what do you think a fraction of a fraction of your song is worth? The conversation around opt-in AI licensing is still new, but the historical parallel to how labels opted everyone into streaming rates is one you need to hear before you make a decision about your catalog.

Plus: the best actors debate (Denzel vs. Will Smith vs. Jamie Foxx — no wrong answers, some very wrong takes), Spider-Man's $2.3B box office and what it means when great art actually breaks through, YouTube's new view counting policy and why it's going to make vanity metrics worse before they get better, and AI hardware shortages that are going to make your next console cost $3,000.

(Indie Artists, Listen Up)

AI music is the fight every indie artist is having right now, so Deraj and Frank put it on the table and refused to pretend the answer is simple. Frank isn't scared of AI — he sees opportunity — but he can't get past the unethical core of tools like Suno: train a model on an artist's voice and cadence, let a stranger steal it, then pay session musicians to recreate the result. His fix is obvious and damning — just compensate the source and the whole thing becomes defensible. Deraj leans pro-AI, blown away by what Claude does for his workflow (he edits this podcast with it), but admits that on the licensing side copyright is king and supervisors won't touch AI-generated music. Somewhere in there is a Billy Jean trap-soul remix he had on repeat, a stat dump that says 20,000 fully-AI tracks get uploaded every day, and Frank's bet that history repeats — analog came back, and eventually the human artist prevails again.

Before any of that, Deraj tells the story of walking a full month on a fully torn ACL — first hurt three years ago playing touch rugby, re-torn going up for a dunk indoors, then re-injured AT physical therapy on a light reflex drill ("who gets injured at PT?"). Surgery is next month. From there the conversation sprawls: the best rap duo of all time (Deraj rides for Outkast), a builder making an ethical "human-made" AI music detector that could get white-labeled under the DSPs, Higgsfield's $70K AI feature film headed for Cannes (the "Hellground" short Deraj couldn't turn off — his wife heard it from another room and asked "is that AI?"), and Ron Taylor winning Kevin Hart's Funny AF after living in his van from 2015 to 2022 to keep chasing comedy.

It closes where it matters most for indie artists: how to land your first TV/film placement. Deraj's take — breaking into sync is actually easier than going viral. Collaboration is the fastest path: find someone with consistent placements, study them, and add real value instead of sliding into the DMs with "let's work." Let a good agency or library pitch for you, use Claude or ChatGPT to find libraries heavy in your genre that have licensed to a given show, and get into a community that shortcuts the learning curve. Deraj's own placements — 2K, NBA, Netflix, Call of Duty, Marvel, Xbox — started exactly that way.

Before the main topic they run the news: Sony and Warner Chappell suing Anthropic (Claude) over scraped lyrics, the Christian metal band Demon Hunter taking Netflix to court over "KPop Demon Hunters," Instagram quietly bringing long-form video and playlisting back, and the GTA VI leak wave that knocked $2.8 billion off Take-Two's market value right before the trailer dropped. ## Body Copy

This is an honest conversation about being married as an independent artist. Deraj and Frank Bentley — both married over a decade, both active indie artists — sit down and talk through how marriage actually affects a music career. Not as a warning, but as the truth: a marriage you steward well becomes one of the greatest sources of support, belief, and stability an artist can have. Left unstewarded, it's the thing that can quietly derail everything you're building. They get into what that looks like in practice: the expectations you have to set early, the monthly "marriage eval" tool that's been a game-changer, the moment Deraj's wife believed in him before he believed in himself, and the promise he made before the ring was ever on the table.

DistroKid just got acquired by CVC Capital Partners for roughly $2 billion — built on $20/year from indie artists. That story becomes a jumping-off point for a deeper conversation about audience ownership, the Tyler Perry model of building direct-to-fan leverage, and why the indie artist who controls their own email list will always have more power than the one who doesn't. Plus: the AI music debate is shifting. The question is no longer whether it sounds real — it's whether it can be trusted. Deraj and Frank get into it, including Deraj's honest admission that even he's added AI songs to his playlist, and the weird internal shift that happens when you find out.

Sync is a $650 million global market, it's grown four years straight, and bad metadata is still killing 30% of deals. All that, plus a Wild Card debate that got heated: Bad Boys or Rush Hour?

Spotify pays you pennies, the algorithm feels rigged, and the industry seems stacked against you — and you're not wrong. But none of that is your next move. Deraj and Frank Bentley break down why being right about how unfair the music business is won't change a single thing about your career, and what actually will.

They cover the $17M Apple Music streaming fraud exposé (85% AI-generated), the AI models from Meta and OpenAI that literally slipped containment during security tests, why a music platform that gave artists 100% of sales still shut down, and what indie artists actually need to build — a community they own instead of followers they're renting. Plus a heated Watch, Save, Burn debate about superhero movies that almost got personal, and the GTA VI/Netflix announcement that has the gaming world losing their minds.

This one's real, practical, and occasionally hilarious. Episode 10, let's go.
