In this episode, I have a conversation with Taylor Dahlin.

Taylor has spent years doing hyperlocal journalism and photography in Minneapolis, reporting on and photographing what’s going on in her neighborhood. Things like potholes, graffiti, interesting architecture, neighborhood association meetings and political conventions, odd local traditions & characters, local politicians both bland and provocative, and neighborhood businesses. 

Through covering her neighborhood, Taylor has learned a lot about how the city works. Her work helps make the mundane entertaining and has helped expose opportunistic politicians and fraudulent candidates. 

Recently Minneapolis catapulted into headlines with Trump's anti-immigrant surge & Minneapolis residents' resistance. This ostensibly started from a right wing YouTuber creating a hit piece on a Somali daycare center in Taylor’s neighborhood. The federal operation has subsided & the media has mostly moved on. So it seemed like a good time to talk with Taylor about her perspective on all this and more.

I accidentally only recorded the audio of our conversation, so this is an audio-only episode. I’ll be back with video on the next episode.

Things like potholes, graffiti, interesting architecture, neighborhood association meetings and political conventions, odd local traditions &amp; characters, local politicians both bland and provocative, and neighborhood businesses. </p><p></p><p>Through covering her neighborhood, Taylor has learned a lot about how the city works. Her work helps make the mundane entertaining and has helped expose opportunistic politicians and fraudulent candidates. </p><p></p><p>Recently Minneapolis catapulted into headlines with Trump's anti-immigrant surge &amp; Minneapolis residents' resistance. This ostensibly started from a right wing YouTuber creating a hit piece on a Somali daycare center in Taylor’s neighborhood. The federal operation has subsided &amp; the media has mostly moved on. So it seemed like a good time to talk with Taylor about her perspective on all this and more.</p><p></p><p>I accidentally only recorded the audio of our conversation, so this is an audio-only episode. In this episode of Get the Picture podcast, host Brad Sigal talks with Minnesotan and renowned street photographer Valérie Jardin about her current photography project, “We Are Minnesota.” 

“We Are Minnesota” is an ongoing series celebrating the people who make Minnesota strong. Featuring portraits of immigrants alongside Native Americans, the project explores the deep roots and evolving stories that shape Minnesota’s cultural identity and define life in the North Star state. 

This project is extremely timely and important given the national focus on struggles over immigrants and immigration in Minnesota. Each participant in the series answers one question: “What makes Minnesota home for you?”

Valérie also talks about another of her recent projects, “One Love”, a black-and-white photography project celebrating the LGBTQ+ community by capturing moments of everyday life.

Valérie also talks more generally about her approach to street photography, and about her photography workshops around the world.

If you do photography for any amount of time, you’re most likely going to do some work with models. So I thought it would be good to hear a model’s perspective about her experiences working with photographers -- the good, the bad, and the ugly.

So in this episode of Get the Picture, host Brad Sigal and model Roxy Vail explores dynamics between photographers and models.

I’ve had the good fortune to work with Roxt Vail for several years. Her outspokenness about issues she and other models too often face including sexual harassment and assault, racism, and general disrespect, is sobering and powerful. 

I hope this episode helps more photographers understand that the vast majority of women and femme models have experienced creepy men with cameras treating them inappropriately and/or harmfully. And I hope that Roxy sharing some of her experiences and the experiences of other models helps more photographers learn ways to proactively treat models with the respect and dignity they deserve so that there can be principled and productive collaboration.
