satisfy the soul?

Ecclesiastes chapters three through five begin with the famous poem about a

time for every purpose under heaven. The Teacher then follows that poem into

God's enduring work, human limitation, corrupt judgment, oppression,

friendship, worship, vows, wealth, sleeplessness, and the gift of enjoying our

lot and labor.

This study explains why the time poem describes the range of human life rather

than commanding every action; what the difficult Hebrew word olam contributes

to Ecclesiastes chapter three, verse eleven; why two are better than one; how

to approach God truthfully; and why possession is not the same as the

God-given capacity to enjoy. The canonical landing follows these themes toward

Jesus, fulfilled time, divine judgment, compassion for the oppressed, and

resurrection hope.

The governing truth is simple: we can act faithfully within time without

pretending we own time.

empire at the border says resistance is useless?

This episode follows Israel and Judah from the division after Solomon through

the fall of Samaria and Sennacherib's campaign in Judah. Kings, prophets,

Assyrian inscriptions, tribute monuments, siege rhetoric, loyalty oaths, and

the books written within this collective historical world appear on one

timeline.

Assyria tells us how empire wanted to be seen. Scripture tells us what these

events mean. Amos exposes prosperity without justice. Hosea names the covenant

wound no empire can heal. Isaiah shows that the rod is not the hand. Hezekiah

spreads the threatening letter before the living God. And the prophetic hope

leads to Rabbi Jesus: Israel's faithful Son, Bethlehem's shepherd, Galilee's

light, and the righteous King.

The restoration does not claim that Exodus names Hatshepsut or Amenhotep II, does not say Moses worshiped Egyptian gods or ceased to be Hebrew, does not present YHWH as a new deity, and does not define the divine name through quantum physics or string theory. The Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants remain connected in the Creator's purpose without being collapsed into one undifferentiated covenant.

What does it mean to trust God when tomorrow remains uncertain?

Jesus said:

“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Jesus did not promise that faithful people would never experience suffering, uncertainty, loss, or hardship. Instead, He taught us to seek God’s Kingdom, receive today as it comes, and trust the Father with what we cannot yet see.

This bonus episode—8 of 7 in the Walk the Way series—follows the biblical story from Babel to Abraham, Sinai, David, Jesus, and Pentecost.

At Babel, humanity united in rebellion and the nations were scattered. God then narrowed His focus to Abraham so that blessing could eventually reach every family of the earth.

At Sinai, God formed Israel as a kingdom of priests and gave His Word to shape a rescued people. But Sinai did not reverse Babel. Israel was supposed to carry God’s wisdom to the nations, yet the kingdom of David could not complete that calling.

The prophets therefore promised a new covenant. God would place His instruction within His people, give them a new heart, and put His Spirit inside them so they could walk in His ways.

King Jesus accomplished what the earthly kingdom could not.

He humbled Himself, entered our suffering, demonstrated sacrificial love, surrendered His life, overcame the grave, and poured out the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, people from many nations heard the works of God proclaimed in their own languages. What had been scattered at Babel began to be gathered through Jesus.

The Spirit was not given merely to produce powerful experiences. He was given to transform human hearts and teach God’s people how to live.

His presence produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Trusting God therefore does not mean pretending that tomorrow will contain no trouble. It means knowing God’s character, believing in His resurrection power, receiving His Spirit, and choosing to walk in His ways today.

The question is not merely:

Do we believe in God?

The deeper question is:

Do we trust Him enough to obey Him?

Many of us come to Scripture with questions already in our hands.

Sometimes those questions are good. Sometimes they are wounded. Sometimes they are arguments dressed up as questions.
We bring church debates, personal pain, cultural assumptions, favorite teachers, inherited systems, fear, pride, hope, confusion, and desire. Before long, Scripture can become raw material: a verse becomes ammunition, a story becomes a slogan, and a promise becomes detached from the covenant world that gave it meaning.
So before we ask, “What does this verse mean?” we need to ask another question:
Where am I standing when I read it?

Samuel ends not with royal triumph, but with an altar. In 2 Samuel 21–24, we see Saul’s bloodguilt, Rizpah’s grief, David’s weakness, the song of deliverance, the hope of righteous rule, the census, the plague, and sacrifice at Araunah’s threshing floor. David’s throne matters, but it is not ultimate. The kingdom still needs mercy — and the faithful Son of David.

A person can know their theological label, defend their tradition, identify their church background, and win arguments — yet still remain proud, harsh, impatient, cold, loveless, or unchanged.
Labels can describe you, but they cannot restore you.

Did you know the book of Judges shows us that deliverance alone is not enough?

In Judges 6–12, we follow the rise of Gideon, the violent rule of Abimelech, and the tragic leadership of Jephthah. Each judge delivers Israel—but each also reveals something deeper: the heart of the people remains unchanged.

ABRAHAM'S WORLD: THE ROAD OUT OF UR

What kind of world did Abram leave—and why does the Bible remember his journey with language that later echoes in the Exodus?

In Episode 2 of The Bible in Its World, Roger enters the cities, languages, religions, law texts, households, and political transitions surrounding Genesis 11–12. We follow MMAB's conservative identification of biblical Ur with southern Ur, briefly acknowledge the serious northern proposal, examine the rise and fall of Ur III within Abraham's lifetime, and see the tension between an empire that looked permanent and God's assurance of another place. We also enter the multilingual world shaped by Sumerian, Akkadian, and West Semitic speech.

We also place Genesis beside a hymn to the moon god, the law collection associated with Ur-Namma, and the Lament for Ur. These texts do not establish Abram's biography or replace Scripture. They help us hear the religious, legal, musical, and moral worlds that existed beside the biblical worldview.

Most importantly, we read Genesis 15, Exodus 2 and 6, Joshua 24, and Nehemiah 9 to see the covenant continuity: God brings Abram out toward promise, remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and brings Israel out of Egypt. Abram's journey is exodus-shaped, but it is not Moses' Exodus. Matthew, Acts, and Galatians then locate the blessing promised to Abraham in Jesus Messiah and its movement toward the nations without erasing Israel.

Why does God bring His people out—and what happens when an empire acts as if
it owns their bodies, children, and future?

Enter the world of Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty and follow one covenant movement:
a cry rises, God remembers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Pharaoh's power is
confronted, Israel passes through the sea, Torah is given, God's presence comes
near, and the wilderness reveals the heart.

Modern Mind, Ancient Book follows the responsible conservative high-date model
and places the Exodus around 1446 BC. We set Exodus beside Egyptian royal
claims, New Kingdom ideals of justice, a fifteenth-century brickmaking scene,
and the wider ancient legal world. Egypt's sources illuminate the setting, but
Scripture tells us what the Exodus means: God brings Israel out of slavery,
brings Israel to Himself, forms a covenant people by His word, and dwells among

What does God restore in Jesus? Not merely better labels, better arguments, or better religious categories — but humanity itself. Song of Songs, Session One — Desire Without Shame

Why does Holy Scripture preserve a love poem that begins with a woman unashamed to voice desire? In Session One of our Song of Songs study, we follow the poem from chapter one, verse one, through chapter two, verse seventeen. We listen first to the Song as human love poetry, examine its voices and images, consider its conservative Solomonic-period placement without pretending the authorship questions are settled, and explore what the poem teaches about desire, dignity, mutuality, wisdom, and love’s proper time. After the timing refrain has been explained, an original Scripture song carries Song of Songs, chapter two, verses four through seven, from teaching into reflection. Genesis Explained: Creation, Covenant, and the Family of Promise

Genesis begins the covenant story of Scripture: the Creator orders the world, humanity receives image-bearing vocation, rebellion brings sin and death, the nations scatter, and God calls Abraham so blessing may reach the families of the earth. Roger Ferguson surveys that movement through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, ending with providence in Egypt and the promise of return.

This restored teaching preserves Roger's original human voice and confessional framework. It also corrects a small set of objective legacy errors without replacement narration. New source cards distinguish the ancient Mesopotamian setting from an unsupported claim that Abram was ethnically Sumerian, identify Bereshit, Genesis, and toledot accurately, preserve a substantial Mosaic-provenance framework without presenting an exact 1445 BCE date or Joshua completion as explicit Scripture, retain Israel's distinct identity in Egypt, state that Pharaoh recounted his dream before Joseph interpreted it, and avoid falsely naming sin and death as a covenant established by God.

Roger's sons-of-God interpretation is intentionally preserved: the phrase can describe a heavenly kingship status that is borne or claimed through a human ruler. Ancient rulers could live inside rival divine-kingship claims without thereby becoming rightful or necessarily metaphysically divine. Jesus is the rightful Son—the One fit to rule the earth. This is a disclosed canonical interpretation, not a claim that Genesis 6 states the whole formulation in those words.

Why Do the Righteous Suffer? | Survey of Job

Why can a person who loves God still suffer—and what happens when friends turn that suffering into an accusation?

In this restored Survey of Job, Roger Ferguson places Job within the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings; explores the ancient setting associated with Uz; compares Job with other ancient Near Eastern suffering texts; and follows the book's challenge to easy answers about guilt, righteousness, worship, and adversity.

The teaching does not treat suffering as automatic proof of personal sin. Job is introduced as blameless and upright before the debate begins, and his friends' attempt to explain him becomes part of the book's warning.

- Scripture identifies Job with the land of Uz and describes him as the greatest of the people of the East. Lamentations 4:21 associates Uz with Edom, while Genesis preserves several eastern family lines bearing the name. Scripture does not give a precise map coordinate.
- Roger presents the possible Jethro-to-Moses transmission of the Job tradition as his own reconstruction. Exodus identifies Jethro as priest of Midian and Moses' father-in-law, but it does not say that Jethro transmitted Job.
- The story evokes a patriarchal world, but that setting does not establish the date of the book's final written form.
- Comparative sources include Sumerian A Man and His God, Akkadian Ludlul bēl nēmeqi (the Poem of the Righteous Sufferer), and the Babylonian Theodicy. Their shared attention to suffering does not establish direct literary dependence on Job.
- The ancient name Job (Iyyov) has a disputed etymology. The human author is unknown.

Psalms 22–24 form a powerful three-part portrait of the Messiah: the King who suffers, the Shepherd who leads, and the King of Glory who reigns.

Psalm 22 begins with the agonizing cry, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” David describes rejection, mockery, suffering, and apparent abandonment—language that Jesus would take upon His own lips at the cross. Yet the psalm does not end in defeat. Suffering gives way to praise, worldwide worship, and the proclamation of God’s righteousness to generations yet unborn.

Psalm 23 brings us from suffering into the care of the Shepherd. The LORD leads, restores, protects, prepares a table in the presence of enemies, and carries His people through the valley of the shadow of death. Jesus fulfills this hope as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep and leads them into everlasting life.

Psalm 24 completes the movement with the arrival of the King of Glory. The suffering King has not been defeated. The Shepherd has not abandoned His flock. The rightful King enters in triumph, and the gates are commanded to open before Him.

Together, Psalms 22–24 move from the forsaken cry, through the Shepherd’s care, to the everlasting reign of the King of Glory.

What can faithful love do when the story includes absence and harm?

This Bible study follows Song of Songs from chapter five, verse two, through chapter six, verse thirteen—from a knock in the night and an empty threshold to violence by city watchmen, remembered praise, companionship, renewed belonging, and a difficult final call to return.

We name the watchmen's actions without graphic detail or blame toward the woman, preserve her voice, and refuse shallow promises that every rupture resolves. Then we contrast authority that wounds with Rabbi Jesus, who sees vulnerable people, restores dignity, and defines leadership through service.

This episode includes a brief, non-graphic discussion of a woman being beaten by city guards and having her cloak taken. We name the violence without exploiting it, and we do not blame her for what was done to her.
