The Jewish people are no different.

As followers of Jesus, we know that our atonement not only covered our sins once for the next year, but also forgave our sins once and for all. 

That's what happened to the disciples after Jesus' resurrection. They were devastated that he didn't fulfill all of their Messianic prophecies, but then Jesus appears to them on the road and opens their eyes to see everything in a new light. In Luke 24, hearts are opened and eyes can see.

The Pharisees and the Herodians (Matthew 22:15-22)

A second confrontation was from the Pharisees and the Herodians…

This confrontation was a question of POLITICS.

And according to Exodus 12:3-6, it was on the tenth day of Nisan that the lamb was to be set aside for the Passover sacrifice. 

Between the 10th and the 14th of Nisan, the lamb was to be inspected, scrutinized, and tested to be sure it was without spot or blemish (Ex. 12:5). 

So the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem was the day of the setting aside of the Lamb of God. And over the next few days, there was a testing to prove that THIS LAMB was without spot or blemish.

“…knowing that you were redeemed…with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Messiah” (1 Peter 1:18-19). 

As Jewish followers of the Messiah, our atonement was secured as Jesus was crucified on that cursed tree. There is nothing more we can do to earn ourselves forgiveness or atonement, it has already been provided for us. What is left is for us to receive it.

THE MESSIAH MUST COME WHILE THE SECOND TEMPLE WAS STILL STANDING.

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 3:1)

Malachi was not promising that Elijah would appear before the first coming of Messiah, but before the second. Malachi says Elijah would come before the second coming: 

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” (Malachi 4:5-6)

Since the beginning, man has been in search of something to do with sin. From the account in Act One with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3) in the garden, to the story of Ananias and Saphira (Acts 5) in Act Two, our first response is to hide from others, but especially an All-Knowing God.

During these "Days Of Awe," the 10 days between the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement, the Jewish community symbolically casts their sins into the depths of the sea. 

You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate the redemptive story that is taking place in this season. In fact, we believe this will enhance and grow your faith in a God who has already cast our sins into the depths of the sea. 

Who is a God like You, who pardons wrongdoing And passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

He will again take pity on us; He will trample on our wrongdoings. Yes, You will cast all their sins Into the depths of the sea.

In first-century culture, men would often go away to prepare a ‘place’ for their bride - usually encountered for the first time at the wedding feast. In essence, Jesus both foretells and promises his return. He will come back for us like a groom coming for His bride. 

In waiting and preparation, our role is uniquely transformational: we live not in static uncertainty but in proactive anticipation of The Day when the Messiah returns as promised with all eagerly awaiting joy! 

As the world awaits this season to remember the birth of the Messiah in His first coming, let it also point us to His assured return. Waiting can be hard, especially in days like these. Hanukkah is a story about attempted erasure, courageous resistance, and God’s unstoppable commitment to preserve His covenant promises.

In this episode, we walk through the rise of Antiochus, the Seleucid king who sought not only to dominate Israel but to erase its identity - banning circumcision, outlawing Torah, desecrating the Temple, and demanding assimilation. 

Yet when the majority gave way to cultural pressure, a few refused to bow. The Maccabees stood when others surrendered, preserving the line through which Messiah would one day come.

And 150 years later, during this very feast, Jesus walked in the Temple and declared Himself the Light of the World. The same God who preserved His people through the few stands faithful today.

We don't do this work alone. God's own acts of restoration have reverberated throughout history and continue to make their presence known today. As we look forward in anticipation to the return of Jesus, the ultimate recourse for our broken world is clear: He came once and will come again, restoring a world far better than its current state.

The Anti-Semantics of The Chosen People," we look into the origins and implications of words like 'Jew', 'Israeli', and 'Zionism', alongside the associated "anti" language that often paints a distorted picture. Living a mere 62 seconds away from the threat of a rocket from Gaza, Avner offers a perspective that is as grounded as it is enlightening. There's a raw authenticity in his words, reflecting his deep-rooted love for Israel despite its challenges.

Our discussion ranges from debunking the misconception of Israel being a colonial occupation to understanding the descendants of Ishmael. However, the essence of our conversation was about seeing beyond the end times and the prophetic narrative. As Isaiah 53 prophesied, the Messiah would suffer and die as a sacrificial lamb, but also "see His offspring and prolong His days." Scholars have long debated how the Messiah could both suffer and live on, with some suggesting that it is His moral teachings that "live on" after His death. However, we argue that the Resurrection is necessary for fulfilling this prophecy, and that Yeshua's physical resurrection is significant for all.

Furthermore, the Resurrection is not merely an event in the past, but it has a present and future impact. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul writes that if Yeshua had not been raised from the dead, then our faith is in vain. This is the reality for many in the Jewish community during Yom Kippur.

We unpack the biblical roots of Yom Kippur, discuss its modern observance, and ask the critical question: if Jesus is the ultimate High Priest and the final atonement, what does that mean for us today?

1. Yom Kippur in Jewish Tradition: Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in Judaism, where Jewish people seek to make things right with God, often unsure of whether their efforts are enough.
2. Jesus as the Fulfillment of Atonement: The temple sacrifices and the role of the High Priest in Jewish history were shadows of what Jesus would ultimately fulfill as the final atonement for sin.
3. The Significance of the Scarlet Thread: For 40 years before the destruction of the Second Temple, the scarlet thread on the Yom Kippur scapegoat stopped turning white, symbolizing that the sacrifices were no longer accepted - coinciding with the death and resurrection of Jesus.
4. Jewish Rituals and the Messiah: Jewish traditions and practices, like the two goats on Yom Kippur, symbolically point to Jesus, who became both the sacrifice and the scapegoat for humanity's sins.
5. The Growing Openness in Israel: Amid military tension, young Israeli soldiers are increasingly looking toward God, with many becoming open to the idea of Jesus as the Messiah.

We find in the story of the Akedah a vivid representation of how far God was willing to go to grant us that atonement. "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son," Abraham tells Isaac, echoing a promise fulfilled through Jesus (Genesis 22:8). Akedah literally means, “The Binding,” and recounts the story of Abraham taking his “one and only son” Isaac to the top of Moriah to sacrifice him.

In Jewish tradition, the Akedah resurfaces each year during Rosh Hashanah services, serving as a collective meditation on obedience, sacrifice, and divine intervention. The sound of the shofar, the ram's horn, harkens back to that moment when God provided a ram to replace Isaac. This narrative reverberates today as Jews consider God's provision and await the coming of the Messiah. Yet for many, the realization that the Messiah has already come remains an unopened gift.

As we read in Hebrews 11:19, Abraham "considered that God was able even to raise [Isaac] from the dead." This faith foreshadows the faith we're called to have in Jesus, Yeshua in Hebrew, as the ultimate sacrifice and the final unbinding of sin. Let's pray today for our Jewish brothers and sisters to recognize Yeshua as their atonement and their freedom from spiritual bondage.

But haven't they rejected Jesus as the Messiah?

And doesn't that mean that they're no longer His chosen people?

We believe the answer to both of those questions is a resounding "no!"

Are we talking about an old relationship that once was, and now God has moved on to another love, the church? We believe the Jewish are still chosen, still loved, still the apple of His eye.

First and foremost, God's love for the Jewish people is eternal and unchanging. He promised Abraham that He would make of him a great nation, and He has kept that promise. That covenant was and is an everlasting covenant (Genesis 17:7), and God will never go back on His Word.

You see, God's plan all along has been to use the Jewish people to bless the whole world. In Genesis 12:3, God says that He will bless those who bless Abraham and his descendants and curse those who curse them. All through history, we see God's faithfulness to His chosen people.

God's love for the Jewish people is eternal and unshakeable. They continue to play a vital role in world events, and the community of Jesus-followers should love them and pray for, and seek out, their salvation.

While Hanukkah is widely known as the Festival of Lights, and is enjoyed by millions around the world each year, many are unaware of its Biblical backstory.

From the perspective of the Old Testament book of Daniel, we can draw a connection between Hanukkah and Antiochus Epiphanes IV, who, in 167 BCE, desecrated a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and attempted to ban their religious, cultural and civil practices. His oppressive rule acted as a trigger for the Maccabees, who eventually liberated the Jews from their oppressor.

Over two thousand years later, this brave stand still has an impact on us all—for although we may not change our circumstances overnight, we still must learn from them how to fight oppression and maintain our faith in ourselves against all odds.

This crucial link can help us think differently about the Festival of Lights, known as Hanukkah. We must remember that one day there will be another "Antiochus" to come onto the scene, so we must always remain vigilant and prepared for his arrival.

Through this episode, we can better understand Hanukkah's significance, and also discover why it is so important to be ready for another tumultuous time in Jewish history.

He is the eternal Son of God. He “became” flesh in the womb of Mary through the supernatural work of the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit). It was a miracle from the beginning to end!

We want the birth of Jesus to be relevant to our Gentile Christian brothers and sisters as we reclaim the Jewishness of Jesus, especially in His birth. 

We’re not telling you to throw away the tree and get rid of the presents, but to faithfully examine Scripture and your remembrance of the birth of Jesus, and celebrate it for what it truly is, not for what it has become. We’re not going to be any more prescriptive than that, but to ask you to bring deep meaning to the annual celebration. 

Wherever you may find yourself during this season, our hope is that you find yourself getting curious. This means for many of us we will begin to challenge our preconceived notions and traditions, and seriously contemplate what the birth of this baby, the Promised Messiah of Israel, means for us today.

Jewish tradition teaches that to remember our time in the desert, we should build a sukkah (booth) at home and decorate it with palm branches and leafy boughs of trees, and hang fruit from the makeshift ceiling, both of which are meant to remind us of Israel's harvest season.

We also eat all kinds of different foods inside the sukkah because they represent abundance and joyous celebration. The goal is not to do these things perfectly but rather to try to connect as much as possible with what life was like for our ancestors in the desert.

In addition to being a time for looking back on the past, Sukkot is also a time for looking forward. More on that in the next episode. As we have previously explored, God's chosen ones are two distinct, yet intimately connected groups – the Covenant People (Jews) and the Commissioned People (the Church made up of Jews and Gentiles). After having looked into the unique journey of the Covenant People in our last episode, it's time to unpack the complexities of the Commissioned People – the Church.

From its birth at Shavuot, or Pentecost, the Church was initially entirely Jewish. Yet, it evolved, expanding to welcome the Gentiles, or the Nations, and turning into a vibrant blend of Jews and Gentiles. Paul's metaphor of Gentiles being grafted into Israel's tree beautifully illustrates this unity in diversity.

In this episode, we explore the divine calling of the Church – its mission to go out into the world and make disciples of all nations, beginning with the Jewish people and extending to every corner of the globe. This divine commissioning is not just a task or responsibility, but a significant part of the Church's identity.

On this episode of the Jewish Road Podcast, we'll be talking about how the Jews of Jesus' day missed the Messiah and how we can avoid missing Him when He comes again. Toward the end of His time on earth, Jesus wept over Jerusalem, knowing her destruction was imminent. Why?

He said, "Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation."

The Jews of Jesus' day missed their Messiah. They missed His birth, His life, and His death.

And they had everything they needed to expect His coming. And so do we.

We have all of the prophecies pointing to His first coming fulfilled in Him. And we have all of the prophecies pointing to His second coming on the cusp of being fulfilled right now as we speak.

From the opening words of the book of Genesis to the closing of the Old Testament, all signs pointed to Jesus, the Messiah. This episode is a reminder for us, especially in this season, to be watchful and prepared so that when He comes again, we will not miss Him but will be ready to welcome Him with open arms.

But where does this thinking come from?

And what does the Bible actually say about God's relationship with the Jewish people? We'll dig into all of that in this episode and offer some ways to respond to this line of thinking.

The Feast of Booths, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, is one of the most important holidays in the Jewish calendar. It is a pilgrimage feast when Jews worldwide celebrate the harvest and give thanks for the earth's bounty. 

The feast lasts for seven days, and during this time, the Jewish people build temporary shelters, or sukkot, in which they live and eat. They also decorate these sukkot with fruit and foliage, and on each day of the feast, they make a pilgrimage to the temple to offer sacrifices. 

The Feast of Booths is a joyful time, but it also has deep spiritual meaning. For Jews, it is a reminder of the time when their ancestors wandered in the desert for 40 years. It is a time to reflect on God's faithfulness and give thanks for all he has given us. 

We are called to read the Bible and understand it. However, we often skim over passages we don't fully understand. We may not know the historical context or the meaning of the Hebrew words, so we simply move on, missing out on the true beauty and depth of Scripture. 

This is especially true when we come to John 7 and the Feast of Booths. John mentions the Feast 7 times in this passage, yet many of us miss its significance. 

As we begin this Feast today, let us slow down and take a closer look at this important passage. By doing so, we will better understand God's Word and His plan for our lives.

Rich has been a friend for years who is well-versed in all things Israel and living as a Christian immersed in the Jewish context of Scripture. We are so lucky to have him as a friend and resource. Together we walk through Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot.

Peter says, "Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?" Why do you marvel? This is the promised day that was spoken of by the prophet Joel. And in case you're still doubting, not only does Peter quote Joel, he applies it to what's happening right then and there. This is what was promised! The result? 5,000 were added that day.

The early church was filled with people who were steeped in Jewish culture, thought, and tradition. They were men of Israel who worshiped the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And the message they preached was that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised in the Hebrew Scriptures. If you want to understand the early church, you need to understand its Jewish roots.

In this episode of the Jewish Road Podcast, we explore why are the Jewish people God's chosen people and why did He choose them - all from a Messianic perspective. This was the question that surfaced in Acts 10 when Jewish Peter meet a Gentile Roman named Cornelius. He was a God-fearing man who gave alms and prayed regularly. He even had a vision from God telling him to send for Peter (Acts 10:1-8). So he did and when Peter arrived, Cornelius fell at his feet worshiping him (Acts 10:25). Obviously, this was not the reaction that Peter was expecting, but he saw that God was at work.

So what about today? The tables have turned. The question today is no longer, "Can a Gentile be saved?" but rather, "Can a Jew be saved?" While the answer to both questions is, "Yes!" and we know God desires for all people to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), there is still a lot of confusion today. No doubt, for those who have experienced the loss, the Holocaust has had such a profound impact on our people. Unfortunately, there are more alive today who don’t know it even exists.

Whether it is ignorance or denial, we look at the ways in which some people have tried to erase the Holocaust from history. We discuss the challenge of educating younger generations about the Holocaust, especially as fewer survivors still share their stories.

Despite these challenges, we also focus on the resilience and determination of the Jewish people, who have persisted in keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive despite attempts to silence them. We explore the ways in which Jewish communities worldwide have come together to preserve the memory of those lost in the Holocaust, and to honor their legacy.

Then he hears the other side and says, “You’re right.” 

A bystander protests, “They can’t both be right!” And Tevye, caught in the tension, sighs, “You’re also right.”

That’s Israel today. Stuck between two truths - both undeniably right, both in direct conflict.

Efraim has been in ministry with his wife, Jeannie, since 1975. They've spent the last few decades in Israel, serving communities and sharing the love of Yeshua. Currently, Efraim pastors the Light of Galilee Congregation in Nahariyya, a city that lies just six miles from the Lebanese border. His congregation is unique as it consists of both Jews and Arabs, and he even co-pastors with a Lebanese Christian.

His early years in a Conservative Jewish home in the Bronx instilled in him a deep love for his Jewish heritage. However, it was in college, amidst the turbulence of the 1960s counter-culture, where he discovered Yeshua as the promised Messiah. Ever since, he's carried a burden to share this life-changing message, especially within Israel. According to Efraim, "Israel is one of the most open places to share the message of Yeshua with other Jewish people. All you need is some courage, and the willingness to share your faith."

As if the night couldn't get any more remarkable, a Jordanian Christian friend of ours joined us toward the end. We seized the opportunity to capture her perspective on how the current events in Israel and Gaza are affecting the Jordanian Arab community.

This episode provides firsthand insights into what life really is like so close to conflict and how faith plays a pivotal role in navigating these uncertain times. 

The Ten Days of Awe, also known as the High Holy Days, are a significant period in the Jewish calendar. These represent the last three festival days given to Israel in Leviticus 23 in the Hebrew Bible, or what we at The Jewish Road like to call Act One of a two-act play. These festival days are actually called Moedim in Hebrew, or “Appointed Times.” These are God’s appointed times for Israel in which He laid out the course of history for Israel and, in fact, the world as He brings everything to fulfillment in His kingdom. 

We should note that there are seven appointed times or festival days given to Israel in Leviticus 23, and they were all prophetic. Four of them have been historically fulfilled, leaving the final three festival days that occur in the fall as prophetic and yet to be fulfilled.  

Having said that, the first appointed time on the Fall calendar is in Leviticus 23:23-25, the Feast of Trumpets or Yom Teruah in Hebrew, the Day of Blowing Trumpets. This is the first of the High Holy Days on Israel’s calendar and it is celebrated today as Rosh Hashanah or the Jewish new year.  However, if we look at verse 23 we read that this day is a solemn rest and memorial that occurs on the first day of the seventh month, Tishrei. The first month on the Hebrew calendar is Nisan, the time of Passover in the spring. How is this disparity reconciled? Jewish people traditionally began to celebrate this holiday as Rosh Hashanah as the civil new year on Israel’s calendar, beginning during the second Temple period. It is strictly traditional as the new year is in the spring. Interestingly, the Babylonians celebrated their new year at this time and we believe that Israel brought that tradition with them some time after the Babylonian captivity. 

The blowing of the shofar or the trumpet was meant to bring Israel’s attention to a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal as we turn our attention to God. It is a time when people take a hard look at their lives and actions over the past year. 

Traditionally, this begins what is called the Ten Days of Awe. It's believed that God opens the Book of Life on Rosh Hashanah and seals it on Yom Kippur, deciding the fate of each individual for the upcoming year.

Why is this season important? Well, it's a rare pause, a collective breath for introspection. It’s not just about asking for forgiveness, but also about forgiving others and oneself. 

In Jewish tradition, it's a time to set the tone for the year ahead, wipe the slate clean, and start anew. It’s why on the civil calendar, the Jewish community calls this the Jewish New Year. You’ll probably see on your local TV news a Happy New Year wish to “our Jewish friends” and you’ll see a graphic of apples and honey, that your new year may be sweet.

But really, this isn't just a religious exercise; it's a deeply human one, a call from the Creator to not only look back, but also look forward.

In this powerful conversation, Rabbi Yehuda Glick shares his lifelong mission to restore the Temple Mount as a place of prayer, worship, and unity for all nations. 

Drawing from Scripture, history, and personal experience, he explains why Zion is more than a location - it’s a calling.

Paul’s concern is rescue, not replacement. He confronts the claim that Gentiles need the works of the law to belong. By returning to Abraham, he shows that righteousness has always been by faith and that the blessing promised to the nations reaches its center in the Messiah. That’s inclusion without erasure.

We then trace what Galatians 3 does say - justification by faith, Gentile heirship with Abraham, the law as guardian, one body in Messiah - and what it never says: that the church is the new Israel or that Jewish identity and the land are cancelled. The result is a bigger table, not a different family.

• Justification by faith predates Sinai; Abraham believed and was counted righteous.
• Gentiles are heirs with Abraham through the promised Seed, Messiah Jesus, without identity transfer to “Israel.”
• The law is a guardian, not a ladder; it cannot annul the earlier promise.

It is one of the biggest holidays on the Jewish calendar and is the start of the High Holy Days season. Synagogues are packed with Jewish people today, gathered to hear the blowing of the shofar and beginning 10 Days of Awe and repentance, hoping they will be inscribed in the Book of Life for one more year.

Yet, not one thing of all of that is found in Scripture. It is strictly tradition.

Maybe it's time we take a deeper look and rethink Rosh Hashanah.

This holiday has roots in both the Old and New Testaments, and its implications are still relevant to how we live today.

Imagine being the Israelites in the wilderness and having your community's sin cast onto the head of a goat that was then set free in the wilderness, never to return again. Or imagine being a Jewish follower of Jesus as he hung on that cursed tree. He who knew no sin became sin on our behalf. At his death, sin was removed and the guilty ones were set free.

All of this plus what all of this has to do with the face-off between Jesus, Barabbas, and Pilate makes for a fascinating exploration of this holiday and its implications for us today.

While the word "repentance" might conjure up images of regret and shame, Teshuvah is about turning toward something as much as it's about turning away from something else. It's about re-aligning ourselves with God.

The month preceding the High Holy Days, known as Elul, is traditionally a time to begin this process of self-examination and repentance. It's like a warm-up for the spiritual marathon that lies ahead.

It's almost as if the two don't really go together. Go back 2,000 years and tables were completely turned the other way.

Our podcast series will explore the Jewish roots of the early church and how its founders were steeped in Jewish culture, thought, and tradition. They were...Jewish. We'll also see how this rich heritage has been lost over time and how we can reclaim it today.

In first-century Jerusalem, it's been 50 days since Passover, Jesus was crucified, rose again, and appeared to more than 500 followers over the course of 40 days.

Now, it's ten days after that and there is a gathering in Jerusalem waiting for the promised Helper. When the Holy Spirit descends on this gathering of Jewish followers, it would change the world. The beginnings were Jewish from its inception and would start a movement still prevalent today.

Let's dig in and look at Acts 2 from Act Two (see what we did there?), and of course, jump back to the roots of Pentecost, AKA Shavuot, from Act One.

Presents, decorations, and even the true meaning of Hanukkah have now been heavily intertwined with those of Christmas, creating a December dilemma for many.

To combat this, we need to return to the origin stories of both narratives. For Hanukkah, we need to remember a God who sustained a small tribe of people in their fight for religious freedom against those who wanted to oppress them. For Christmas, we need to remember a prophesied Messiah who would save the world not through His birth, but His death.

'Tis the season to get back to the roots of what matters and connect to a greater story.

The Middle East is a puppet show of chaos, with Houthis, Hamas, and Hezbollah commanding attention. But these groups are just the actors - who’s the puppet master behind it all?

Prayer is a universal act, a meeting place between the human and the divine, and during these days, it takes on an even more profound significance.

Tefilah is less about asking God for what we need, and more about aligning ourselves with God’s will.

For Christians, the idea of interceding with Jesus as our mediator adds a layer of grace to this sacred time.

The Jewish tradition teaches that during these Ten days, three books are opened in the heavenly courts: the Book of Life, the Book of Death, and the Book of the In-Between. Each person's fate for the coming year will be inscribed in one of these books based on their deeds.

While this may sound intimidating, it's also a beautiful reminder that our actions have consequences - both in this world and the next.

So, the first line of attack comes from the priests and the elders and the question that is at issue is His AUTHORITY.

And it’s worth our time to pause for a moment and ponder the question of authority.

To put this in perspective, imagine if another event of the magnitude of September 11th happened again on the same date, but centuries later. The sheer coincidence would be staggering, wouldn't it? This is the reality of Tisha B'Av, a day of deep mourning in Judaism.

But Tisha B'Av is not just about the past, it's also about resilience and hope for a better future. It's a significant piece of the historical puzzle that informs our present faith and influences our shared journey. As followers of Jesus, understanding these roots can give us a richer, more nuanced perspective of our own faith.

When we approach the subject of the virgin birth, whether Jew or Gentile, we tend to think about the story we are most familiar with: Mary and Joseph, the baby in the manger, angels and shepherds. Though this miracle is a complicated thing to explain, we are dancing in familiar space in the Christian world. For us Jews, exploring this topic means we have wandered into foreign territory that’s “not for us.” At least that’s what our mothers told us. 

The subject we’re talking about is obviously Christmas and yet, it has nothing to do with anything Jewish. But does anybody meditate on the deeper significance of what was going on that day in Bethlehem? For Jews, it’s a non-issue. For many Gentiles, they don’t want the ugliness of the cross to interfere with the stocking celebration. 

It seems pretty obvious that as our culture has become more and more secularized, it has also become enamored with a one-dimensional, simplistic view of reality that leads us to focus so much on the story and the sweetness of a baby boy that we can forget the bigger reason for the season.

A moment to contextualize the moment we find ourselves in, what’s happening in our world today. The stage is being set. The actors are taking their place. The classic battle between allegiance to empire or kingdom is being waged. As we have gone through history, we have seen the Pharaohs building their empire demanding total commitment through oppression against the backdrop of a God leading His people through the wilderness, like a shepherd leads His sheep. We have seen empire rear its ugly head: Nebuchadnezzar and the empire of Babylon, Herod and the empire of Rome, Hitler and the Third Reich.

This week we’ve seen Vladimir Putin demand allegiance to the Russian empire.

“Do not think to yourself that in the king’s palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

By their wit and wile – though behind the scenes orchestrated by God – Esther and Mordecai foiled Haman’s plot. Following Haman’s execution and the deliverance of the Jews, Esther and Mordecai established a feast for future generations to celebrate their people’s survival for “their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration” (Esther 9:22).

And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews… obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies… that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor. (Esther 9:20-22)
