I share personal experiences, including my walks to and from work and returning to swimming, to illustrate how changing the way I perceived an experience helped me approach recovery with greater awareness and regulation.

I also reflect on why concussion recovery requires more than addressing the physical symptoms alone. Learning to recognize the stories I was telling myself, understand what my brain was communicating, and reframe perceived threats allowed me to work with my nervous system rather than constantly activating it. This is not about toxic positivity or ignoring symptoms—it is about developing a more realistic, compassionate, and supportive perspective throughout the recovery process.

My goal in this episode is to help you recognize how your emotional experience may be influencing your symptoms and recovery, and to encourage you to pause, reflect, and consider: What is my nervous system communicating, and what story am I attaching to this experience?
</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:27:10</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/1a8e1e5f-5d04-432a-8e5f-1cbd5927d3d8/logos/a56f47f1-32b2-44d5-9786-e5318da8fcc0.jpeg"/><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>10</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Episode 10: The Emotional Impact on Our Recovery</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Episode 9: How to Know Healing IS Happening: Recovery Time is the Key

What if you’re healing… but you just don’t know how to see it? 🧠💛

One of the hardest parts of concussion recovery is still experiencing symptoms and wondering, “Am I actually getting better?”

But healing isn’t always as simple as “I have symptoms = I’m not healing.”

Your symptoms can still be present while your brain is adapting and creating new pathways. I include the key areas I believe are essential to moving forward:

* A is Action - Taking action in your recovery to move you forward instead of relying only on rest and how to take action in your journey.

* B is Breaks - Using strategic breaks through out your day and week supports the brain in healing. I also provide ideas for rest using the BREAKS acronym

* C is Cardio - I discuss the importance of including cardiovascular exercise in this journey to help restore function for both brain and nervous system health

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin, my hope is that this episode gives you a framework to work from while empowering you in navigating the overall concussion recovery journey.

Recovery is personal, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Tune in to learn how to take a more active role in your healing and begin working toward feeling like yourself again.
</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:18:39</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/1a8e1e5f-5d04-432a-8e5f-1cbd5927d3d8/logos/a56f47f1-32b2-44d5-9786-e5318da8fcc0.jpeg"/><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>4</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Episode 4: The A.B.C's of a Successful Concussion Recovery</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Episode 3: Functional Injury

Most concussion advice overlooks the fact that your brain injury is a functional injury—yet understanding this simple shift can revolutionize your recovery.

If you or someone you care about has suffered a concussion and feels misunderstood or lost in the recovery process, this episode is your essential guide to taking your healing into your own hands.
